Lenora had fully intended to spend nap time doing something productive.

That had been the plan, anyway.

The dishwasher had already been unloaded before lunch. She’d wiped down the kitchen counters while Charlie happily threw pieces of banana from her high chair with the confidence of someone contributing meaningfully to the household. Rhett had insisted on wearing his little Broncos jersey because Daddy’s favorite team apparently qualified as appropriate attire for every season of the year, then spent nearly an hour in the backyard demanding that Jack throw him “one more football” until one more had somehow become forty-seven.

Lunch had followed.

Charlie’s eyelids had started drooping halfway through her grilled cheese.

Rhett had argued passionately against the existence of naps despite yawning through every sentence.

Within twenty minutes, both children had surrendered.

Jack had disappeared to shower while Lenora folded the last basket of laundry in their bedroom, sunlight pouring through the windows and warming the hardwood floor beneath her bare feet. The windows were cracked open just enough to let the mountain air drift through the house, carrying the scent of pine and the distant laughter of neighborhood kids enjoying the afternoon.

It had become wonderfully, suspiciously quiet.

At first she hadn’t noticed.

Jack disappearing for a shower during nap time wasn’t unusual. He often took advantage of the peaceful hour before the tornadoes woke back up.

But after a while she realized she hadn’t heard anything.

No familiar buzz of the beard trimmer.

No humming.

No cabinet doors opening.

No muttered complaints about one side refusing to match the other.

Nothing.

Silence from Jack Callahan was rarely innocent.

She smiled to herself as she folded one of Charlie’s tiny floral sleepers before setting it neatly into the finished pile. Another glance toward the bathroom door only deepened her curiosity.

The door remained mostly closed.

Sunlight spilled across the hallway.

Still nothing.

She called his name once.

No answer.

Now she knew he was up to something.

Leaving the basket on the bed, Lenora absentmindedly picked up one of Rhett’s little dinosaur T-shirts and wandered down the short hallway, intending to hang it in his room before checking on whatever mysterious project her husband had apparently undertaken.

She nudged the bathroom door open with her shoulder.

The question she’d been about to ask never made it out.

She simply stopped.

Jack stood in front of the vanity, freshly showered, chestnut-brown hair still damp, one hand resting casually against the countertop while the other rubbed thoughtfully across his jaw.

His beard…

Was gone.

Every last bit of it.

For one long heartbeat, Lenora simply stared.

Her mouth parted.

She blinked once.

Then again.

The expression on her face slowly folded into the smallest, most genuinely disappointed pout she’d worn in years.

“Oh…”

The quiet sound slipped out before she could stop it.

It wasn’t horror.

It wasn’t anger.

It wasn’t even disbelief.

It was simply… sadness.

She tilted her head, studying him from another angle as though maybe—just maybe—the beard had somehow become invisible.

It hadn’t.

“Oh, honey…”

The words escaped on the softest breath.

“I loved your beard.”

She couldn’t stop looking at him. Her eyes wandered over the unfamiliar jawline, the smooth cheeks, and the face she’d almost forgotten existed beneath all that scruff.

She crossed the rest of the bathroom slowly, smiling despite herself.

“You still look incredibly handsome,” she admitted, because pretending otherwise would’ve been ridiculous. “Honestly… ridiculously handsome.”

Her smile softened.

“But you don’t look like my Jack.”

She reached up and cupped his cheek, her thumb brushing slowly across the smooth skin where his beard had been only an hour ago. The unfamiliar feeling made her lips purse all over again.

“I don’t know what to do with this.”

A tiny laugh escaped her.

“I miss it already.”

She continued gently stroking his jaw, still trying to convince herself she’d eventually get used to it.

Then another thought struck her.

Her eyes widened.

She looked toward the hallway where two sleeping children remained blissfully unaware of the crisis unfolding in the master bathroom.

“Oh my God…”

A grin immediately began replacing the pout.

She pressed her lips together, already losing the battle against laughter.

“Rhett is going to freak the fuck out when he sees you.”

She could picture it perfectly.

“He has only ever known Daddy with a beard.”

Her shoulders started shaking.

She looked back at Jack, laughter already filling her eyes.

“He’s going to walk in here, look at you…” She paused, imagining their three-year-old standing frozen in the doorway, clutching one of his dinosaurs with complete seriousness. “…and ask me where his daddy went.”

The image became too much.

She laughed outright, tears collecting in the corners of her eyes.

“He is genuinely going to think you’re some random man standing in our bathroom. He’s not going to be joking. He’s going to be completely convinced I lost his father somewhere between lunch and nap time.”

Still smiling, she stepped closer until there wasn’t any space left between them. Both hands came up to cradle his face, her thumbs brushing back and forth across his freshly shaven cheeks with unmistakable affection.

“I still think you’re the most handsome man I’ve ever seen.”

She leaned up and kissed him softly before resting her forehead against his.

“…But I’m going to be very excited when your beard comes back.”

Jack had known the shave would be noticed.

He had not anticipated grief.

The first small sound from the doorway reached him while his hand was still passing over the unfamiliar smoothness of his own jaw, and the reflection in the mirror changed before he turned. Lenora stood behind him holding one of Rhett’s shirts, her expression caught somewhere between surprise and genuine loss. The sight of her mouth settling into that soft, wounded curve nearly made him laugh, but the affection underneath it stopped the sound before it escaped.

She looked as though he had removed something belonging jointly to the marriage without consulting her.

Jack lowered his hand from his face and turned toward her fully.

Cool air moved over skin that had not felt it directly in years. The sensation had been strange since the razor made its first pass—too clean, too exposed, every shift of air suddenly distinct along his cheeks and chin. He had spent several minutes studying himself afterward, recognizing the face in pieces rather than as a whole. The jaw was his. The mouth was his. The faint scar near his chin had existed since college, though the beard had hidden it long enough for him to forget its exact shape.

The man in the mirror looked younger at first glance.

At the second, he looked more tired.

There was no scruff to soften the lines beside his mouth or distract from the silver beginning near his temples. Nothing between his expression and anyone looking closely enough to read it.

Lenora looked very closely.

Her attention moved over his face with such careful disappointment that amusement warmed his chest despite the accusing emptiness along his jaw. Jack watched her approach, bare feet silent against the bathroom floor, sunlight from the bedroom catching through the loose strands of her hair. The dinosaur shirt hung forgotten from one hand. Everything about her suggested she had entered expecting a minor mystery and discovered an event requiring emotional adjustment.

When her palm settled against his cheek, Jack nearly leaned into it from habit.

The touch felt different.

He could tell by the faint pause in her thumb that she felt it too. Her skin moved directly over his rather than catching against coarse hair, and the intimacy of it surprised him. He had expected shaving to make touch less noticeable. Instead, every pass of her thumb registered with startling precision, warm and soft along a part of him that had been buffered from the full sensation for years.

Jack’s mouth tightened to contain the smile threatening at the edges.

“You’re taking this well.”

His voice carried the dry caution of a man addressing someone who plainly was not taking anything well at all.

The expression she gave him made restraint more difficult. There was affection in it, certainly. She had not recoiled. She had even supplied reassurance with the earnestness of someone trying to support a spouse through an unfortunate but survivable decision. Yet the sadness remained unmistakable.

Jack had seen Lenora disappointed by canceled plans, poor grades she believed should have been better and furniture arriving in a shade that bore no relationship to the photograph online. None of those had produced quite this particular look.

He reached for her waist, drawing her the final inch between them until the front of her body rested lightly against his. The bathroom still held warmth from the shower. Steam faded along the mirror’s corners, and the scent of shaving cream lingered beneath soap and damp cotton. Somewhere outside the cracked bedroom window, a lawn mower started and then cut off abruptly, leaving the house quiet again.

The children remained asleep.

Jack let himself enjoy the strange privacy of the moment.

“I didn’t realize it had achieved separate-member-of-the-family status.”

His hand spread at the small of her back. With the other, he took the dinosaur shirt from her fingers before it slipped unnoticed onto the damp floor and laid it across the counter.

“You should’ve told me it needed advance notice.”

He was teasing, but the warmth of her hands around his face made him understand more than he admitted. Lenora had known him with the beard for nearly all the years that mattered between them. There had been different lengths, occasional attempts at trimming it closer, winters when he let it grow heavier and summers when he threatened to remove it before losing patience with the process halfway through. But it had remained part of the face she kissed goodnight, the face Rhett knew as Daddy and Charlie reached for with curious fingers.

Jack had changed something familiar without realizing how fully familiarity had claimed it.

Her soft assurance that he remained handsome should have made the rest irrelevant. Instead, the honesty that followed struck him somewhere unexpectedly tender.

Not her Jack.

He looked at her over the small distance between them.

The words did not offend him. They made him aware of how thoroughly he existed inside her sense of home. His face was not simply his appearance to her. It was a collection of textures and details her body recognized before thought: beard beneath her palm, roughness against her mouth, the faint scrape along her cheek when he kissed her after several days without trimming it.

Removing it had not made him someone else.

It had temporarily interrupted a language they had been speaking through touch for years.

Jack turned his face slightly into her hand, allowing her thumb another pass along his jaw. The movement came instinctively, though the smooth skin made even that familiar gesture feel newly exposed.

“I’m still in here.”

His voice softened around the reassurance. He pressed a kiss into the center of her palm, his lips brushing skin without the beard creating its usual rough edge.

“Possibly under poor management.”

That earned the shape of a smile he had been waiting for.

Then her attention shifted toward the hallway, and Jack saw the thought arrive before the laughter did.

His own amusement began low in his chest.

Rhett had indeed never seen him without facial hair. There were photographs from before, but to a three-year-old those might as well have depicted another century. The boy understood his father through fixed essentials: broad shoulders, low voice, police uniform, football, beard. Remove one feature without warning and Rhett might consider the entire identity compromised.

Charlie would likely stare.

Rhett would launch an investigation.

Jack imagined his son waking from his nap, wandering down the hallway in the little Broncos jersey and stopping dead when confronted with the clean-shaven stranger standing in his parents’ room. The boy’s suspicion would be immediate and absolute. He would look toward Lenora for confirmation, then back at Jack, searching for the beard as though it might be hidden behind his back.

The laugh escaped before Jack could prevent it.

He kept it quiet, mindful of the sleeping children, but Lenora’s growing helplessness made that increasingly difficult. Her shoulders shook beneath his hand. Tears brightened the corners of her eyes, and the image she constructed became more vivid with every breath she tried unsuccessfully to control.

Jack lowered his forehead toward hers, smiling despite the indictment written across her face.

“He’ll know me.”

The confidence lasted perhaps one second.

Jack pictured Rhett’s solemn stare again.

“He’ll probably know me.”

His thumb moved slowly at Lenora’s waist while he considered the likelihood. Rhett might recognize his voice. Or the watch. Or the fact that this supposed stranger knew exactly where the fruit snacks were hidden.

“He’ll give me a chance to present identification.”

The laughter in Lenora’s eyes worsened.

Jack’s own mouth curved wider. “I know his dinosaur’s name. That should establish probable cause.”

He was not entirely sure the legal phrase applied, but Rhett would not challenge the procedure. The boy’s standards of evidence changed depending on whether the conclusion pleased him.

There was also the possibility Rhett would touch Jack’s face, frown with deep personal betrayal and demand the beard be put back immediately. Charlie might join him once she noticed everyone treating the situation as significant, patting Jack’s cheeks and looking between her parents for an explanation none of them could give in language she understood.

Jack would deserve it.

He had made the decision impulsively by his standards. The morning had been warm. His beard had begun itching beneath the summer heat, and Rhett’s repeated football demands had left sweat caught along his jaw. In the shower, Jack had decided he would trim it shorter. Then one side looked uneven. Correcting it made the other side worse. By the time he accepted the situation had exceeded the abilities of minor adjustment, the beard was already beyond saving.

The silence Lenora had found suspicious had been less mystery than concentration.

There had also been a brief period of denial.

Jack glanced at the trimmer on the counter, surrounded by the remains of what Lenora apparently considered a loved one.

“In my defense, this wasn’t the original plan.”

His eyes returned to hers.

“I was going to clean it up.”

The explanation sounded weak, especially beneath the full evidence of his bare face.

“One side got away from me.”

Jack raised a hand before she could assign blame.

“I don’t know how.”

He did know. He had attempted to correct the line near his jaw without his glasses, confident experience would compensate for imperfect vision. Experience had not. After several increasingly ambitious corrections, the beard had begun resembling terrain eroded by separate weather systems.

“The situation became unrecoverable.”

He spoke with the grave composure normally reserved for departmental reports.

“I made a command decision.”

Lenora’s laughter renewed against him, and Jack felt the sound through every place their bodies touched. It warmed the quiet bathroom more thoroughly than the shower had. He tightened his hand at her back, holding her steady while she imagined the impending collapse of their son’s worldview.

Her palms remained around his face.

Jack discovered he liked that part.

Not her disappointment, though he suspected it would become one of his favorite stories once the beard returned and the marital crisis was safely historical. He liked the uninterrupted contact, the way she kept exploring the changed texture as if touch might restore what the razor had removed. Each sweep of her thumbs made the newly exposed skin feel increasingly sensitive. The kiss she offered only deepened it.

Her mouth met his without the familiar scrape between them.

Jack felt the difference immediately.

The softness was almost startling. Nothing caught against her skin. No roughness complicated the angle. He could feel the full shape of her lips with a clarity the beard had always muted slightly, and his body responded before he had time to decide whether he approved of the change.

His hand tightened at her waist.

The kiss remained gentle, but he followed it when she began to draw back, taking one quiet second more before letting her forehead settle against his. The bathroom counter pressed lightly against the back of his hip. Sun-warmed air moved through the bedroom beyond them, carrying pine and cut grass into the clean steam of the bathroom.

Her final confession rested between their mouths.

Jack’s eyes narrowed with mock offense, though tenderness had already ruined the effect.

“You’re looking forward to my face becoming less accessible.”

His palms traveled around her waist, settling evenly at her sides.

“That’s hurtful.”

The smooth cheek beneath her thumb undermined the accusation. Jack turned his head just enough to press another kiss into the base of her palm. Her skin felt warmer against his mouth without the intervening scruff.

He had to admit there were advantages.

Lenora’s disappointment remained too sincere to exploit them fully.

Jack studied her face now with the same care she had given his. The small pout had softened but not disappeared. Her eyes still moved toward his jaw as if expecting the beard to return through force of marital preference. Affection and amusement tangled there, along with unmistakable attraction. She meant it when she said he remained handsome.

She simply preferred him familiar.

The knowledge touched him more than flattery would have.

“I didn’t know you were that attached to it.”

His thumbs moved along the curves of her waist.

“I knew you liked it.”

Liked had apparently been an inadequate assessment.

Jack thought back over the years and found evidence he had failed to interpret properly. Lenora’s fingers moving through his beard when they sat together. The absent way she rubbed the shorter hair beneath his jaw while reading or watching television. Her occasional displeasure after he trimmed it too close. The way she tilted his face toward better light when one patch looked uneven, then insisted on fixing it herself because he lacked the necessary perspective.

She had been co-managing the beard for years.

He had removed it without consulting the board.

Jack’s mouth softened.

“It’ll come back.”

He said it with the certainty of a promise easily kept. The beard had always grown faster than he wanted when he was maintaining it and slower than Lenora wanted whenever he shortened it. Biology would inevitably restore peace.

“Give it a week and you’ll stop looking at me like I sold the house without telling you.”

His hand left her waist long enough to cover one of hers against his cheek. He held it there, broad palm over the back of her hand, letting her feel the unfamiliar face she had already declared temporary.

“Two weeks and Rhett will forgive me.”

Jack paused.

“Charlie might hold a grudge.”

Their daughter had recently developed strong opinions about any alteration she did not authorize. A different plate at breakfast could ruin an otherwise promising morning. Jack’s entire face changing during her nap might constitute a personal offense.

He looked toward the hallway, listening.

Nothing.

The house remained in that rare, fragile stillness parents never trusted fully enough to waste. The distant neighborhood sounds drifted through open windows, softened by the walls. Somewhere a dog barked twice. A breeze shifted the bedroom curtains. Neither child answered.

Jack returned his attention to his wife.

Nap time still belonged to them.

Lenora’s body rested against his with no urgency to move. The laundry waited on the bed. The bathroom counter held the evidence of his failed grooming strategy. Rhett’s dinosaur shirt lay beside the sink, still needing to be returned to the appropriate room. None of it required immediate attention.

The old version of Jack might have suggested she finish folding while he cleaned the sink, wiped down the counter and vacuumed any stray hair from the floor before one of the children tracked it through the house. The impulse appeared now, orderly and familiar.

He ignored it.

Instead, Jack slid one arm around her back and shifted them away from the vanity. His freshly washed hair was still damp enough to cool his forehead where it touched hers.

“Come here.”

The request was unnecessary given how little space already remained between them, but he used it anyway. He drew her more fully into his arms, broad hand spreading between her shoulder blades, and rested his mouth near her temple.

“You’re going to survive this.”

His lips touched her there.

“I’ll help you through it.”

Another kiss settled near her hairline, his smooth cheek brushing hers. Jack noticed the difference again—the absence of friction, the unguarded warmth of skin against skin. Lenora might mourn the beard, but he suspected she would not entirely dislike the temporary novelty once the initial shock passed.

He tested the theory by turning his face slowly against hers.

The movement was deliberately gentle, his cheek gliding over hers where scruff would ordinarily have scratched. Jack felt the small change in her breathing and smiled against her skin.

“There are benefits.”

His voice lowered, threaded with quiet satisfaction.

“You don’t look convinced.”

He kissed her cheek. Then the curve near her jaw. The clean shave made each touch softer, and he lingered long enough to let her register it before moving higher again.

Jack had spent years careful about the roughness of his beard against Lenora’s skin. He knew how easily repeated kisses could leave her pink along the jaw and mouth, especially when he had gone several days without trimming. Now there was nothing to moderate. No scratch of hair demanding restraint.

He pressed another slow kiss just beneath her ear.

“I could make a case.”

The hand at her back moved once, a steady pass down her spine before returning to rest above her waist. There was no need to push the moment beyond the light intimacy of a quiet afternoon. The children slept within earshot, the door stood open and a basket of tiny clothes waited on their bed.

Desire existed easily beside all of it.

That was one of the things Jack loved most about their marriage. It no longer required ideal circumstances. It lived in bathrooms after disastrous shaves, between folded sleepers and abandoned dinosaur shirts, while their son’s football remained somewhere in the backyard after the forty-seventh throw.

Jack lifted his head enough to look at Lenora again.

The pout had weakened.

He regarded that as progress.

“I see what this is.”

His expression settled into thoughtful suspicion.

“You don’t miss the beard. You’re worried I’ll discover my face is aerodynamic.”

The claim was ridiculous enough to pull another smile from her.

“I’ll be faster now.”

His hand moved to the back of her neck, thumb settling beneath her ear.

“Rhett won’t stand a chance in the backyard.”

Jack had already lost count of how many times their son had ordered him to throw the football again. Rhett’s definition of catching remained generous; most throws struck the grass, bounced once and became successful plays through retrospective declaration. Jack had spent nearly an hour obeying, his shoulder beginning to protest around throw thirty-eight while Rhett remained tireless.

The Broncos jersey had been an especially effective weapon. Rhett wore it with the solemn pride of a man representing the franchise personally, though the number on the back belonged to a player he could not name.

Jack’s gaze softened at the memory.

“He’s going to make me put a helmet on until it grows back.”

The boy might decide a football helmet could conceal the altered face. Or insist Jack wear a scarf indoors. Rhett’s solutions tended toward the impractical but decisive.

“We should probably prepare him.”

Jack imagined a serious family meeting at the foot of the stairs. Rhett listening with folded arms while Lenora explained that Daddy remained Daddy despite catastrophic grooming choices. Charlie wandering away halfway through because something shiny had caught her attention.

“He deserves to hear it from us before he sees me.”

The solemnity in Jack’s voice barely survived the warmth near his eyes.

“We can tell him the beard went on vacation.”

That might create a separate problem. Rhett would ask where. Then when it was returning. Then whether they could call it. By dinner, the family would be expected to FaceTime facial hair.

Jack shook his head faintly.

“No. He’ll want postcards.”

He considered another explanation.

“Maybe it was hot.”

True, simple and unlikely to provoke an investigation.

“He understands hot.”

Rhett also understood scissors, though introducing razors into the explanation seemed inadvisable for a child already fascinated by tools and convinced he should participate in everything his father did.

Jack’s eyes moved briefly toward the closed cabinet where the razor had been returned safely out of reach.

“We’re not telling him how.”

The decision emerged with immediate parental authority.

“He’ll shave a dinosaur.”

The image appeared with enough clarity to make Jack close his eyes briefly. Rhett applying shaving cream to a plastic tyrannosaurus and attempting to remove its scales with whatever instrument he could find. Charlie beside him, enthusiastic accomplice.

Jack opened his eyes again.

“Actually, we’re never discussing this day.”

His palm settled against Lenora’s cheek now, mirroring the way she had touched him. The softness of her skin beneath his hand remained familiar even while his own face felt foreign.

“Rhett wakes up, we act normal.”

That approach had no chance of success.

Jack knew it. Lenora knew it. Rhett’s entire personality made ignoring the change impossible. The boy noticed when Jack wore a different watchband. He would not overlook the disappearance of half his father’s recognizable face.

“We let him reach his own conclusions.”

Jack’s mouth curved.

“Then you explain why a stranger knows his bedtime routine.”

He drew Lenora into another kiss before she could answer, softer than the first but less tentative. His newly bare jaw fitted against her hand as her fingers continued exploring the smoothness with reluctant fascination. Jack felt a quiet pleasure in being examined by her, even when the verdict favored his previous condition.

When he lifted his mouth, he remained close.

“You really hate it?”

The question came without insecurity. He trusted her attraction too completely for that. What lived inside it was curiosity and a small amount of amusement he had not yet exhausted.

Jack watched her expression, already knowing the answer would be more complicated than dislike. She did not hate his face. She disliked the interruption, the unfamiliarity and perhaps the absence of something she associated with comfort.

His thumb brushed lightly across her lower lip.

“You can say yes.”

Warmth gathered near his eyes.

“I’m secure enough to survive facial criticism.”

He paused, reconsidering.

“Probably.”

The smoothness made him feel more exposed than he had expected, as if the beard had hidden not only part of his face but some layer of his age and expression. Lenora could read him regardless. No amount of hair had ever protected him from that. Still, standing beneath her inspection without the familiar scruff between them created a peculiar vulnerability.

Jack found he did not mind it.

Not with her.

He lowered his hand from her mouth and took both of hers, guiding them back to his cheeks with deliberate resignation.

“Go ahead.”

His tone suggested a formal concession.

“Get it out of your system.”

He let her hold his face and examine the damage, his own hands settling at her hips while he watched the smallest changes move across her expression. Disappointment. Affection. Attraction. Humor. The soft concentration of someone relearning a familiar object by touch.

Jack would not have permitted anyone else to look at him this long without becoming uncomfortable.

Lenora’s attention felt like belonging.

A smile gradually formed at the corner of his mouth.

“You know, I looked like this when I was younger.”

The fact was obvious, but Rhett’s impending crisis had reminded him that even Lenora had rarely known the clean-shaven version. There were old football photographs, academy pictures and a handful from his twenties where his jaw remained bare. The man in those images existed before she entered his life, preserved in moments she had only heard described.

Jack touched one of her wrists with his thumb.

“You married the beard.”

His expression became mock contemplative.

“This may invalidate the paperwork.”

He could imagine Lenora’s answer before it came: that she had married the man but reserved the right to prefer certain styling decisions. Jack felt his amusement deepen.

“Do we need to call somebody?”

He glanced toward the bedroom as though legal counsel might be folded among Charlie’s pajamas.

“Lola will have an opinion.”

That certainty wiped the remaining humor from his face for half a second.

Lola would be merciless.

She would enter the house, stop mid-sentence and ask Lenora who the clean-cut insurance salesman was. She might demand proof of identity. She would absolutely take a photograph before the beard returned and preserve it for future family humiliation.

Jack’s jaw tightened in belated regret.

“Don’t send your sister a picture.”

The request came too quickly to sound casual.

He narrowed his eyes at Lenora.

“I mean it.”

She had not reached for her phone, but the possibility now existed between them with alarming force. A photograph could travel faster than the beard could regrow. Within minutes, half of Evergreen might be aware Lieutenant Callahan had suffered a grooming incident.

“Lenora.”

Her expression betrayed her.

Jack moved one hand from her hip and checked behind her as though a phone might already have appeared through some marital sleight of hand. Finding nothing, he returned his palm to her waist.

“This stays in the house.”

His attempt at authority lacked weight beneath the smile he could no longer suppress.

“At least until Rhett confirms my identity.”

The house remained still around them, preserving the ridiculous intimacy. Jack let the laughter fade gradually, leaving the warmth of her body against his and the steady touch of her palms at his bare face.

He had begun the shower wanting relief from summer heat.

He had emerged looking unfamiliar to his wife, potentially unrecognizable to his children and vulnerable to Lola’s entire collection of jokes.

It had been a poor command decision.

Jack accepted that.

He bent and pressed his mouth to Lenora’s forehead, holding the kiss there while his arms tightened around her.

“I’ll grow it back.”

This time the promise carried no teasing. He felt her soften against him, though he knew the reassurance had never truly been necessary. She would adjust if he chose to keep it gone. She would still touch him, want him and recognize him beneath the difference.

But Jack liked being her Jack.

He liked the face her hands knew without thought. He liked the quiet scrape of his beard against her cheek and the way she sometimes caught his chin between her fingers while deciding whether it needed trimming. He liked Rhett believing facial hair was one of the essential requirements of fatherhood and Charlie tugging at it while she sat on his lap.

The beard had become part of their family’s understanding of him.

That seemed reason enough.

Jack drew back and looked down at Lenora with renewed seriousness.

“Although I’m not apologizing for the next few days.”

His hands slid slowly along her sides, settling at the small of her back.

“You said I’m ridiculously handsome.”

The reminder warmed his expression with restrained satisfaction.

“I heard you.”

He leaned closer, smooth cheek brushing deliberately against hers once more.

“And since I’ve already traumatized you, I should probably make use of the temporary advantages.”

His lips found the corner of her mouth, then moved gently along her cheek without the familiar friction. Jack felt her smile beneath the next kiss and let his own answer it.

He did not rush.

Nap time had already offered them quiet they had not planned to use. Laundry could remain folded in incomplete stacks. The bathroom counter could wait for cleaning. Rhett’s shirt would reach his room eventually, and neither child showed any sign of waking.

Jack kept one ear tuned automatically toward the hallway while allowing the rest of his attention to remain with his wife.

He kissed the smooth path along her jaw again, more slowly this time, then rested his mouth near her ear.

“You have until they wake up to adjust.”

His voice carried the low amusement of a challenge he knew she would pretend to resent.

“After that, I may need you to verify me.”

Jack lifted his head, meeting her eyes.

“If Rhett asks where Daddy went, try to look convincing when you point at me.”

His thumb moved once at her back.

“And if he cries, this was your idea.”

The accusation made no sense and required none.

Jack smiled fully then, the clean-shaven version changing his whole face in a way even he could feel. Without the beard, there was nowhere for the expression to hide. Every line of affection, amusement and quiet contentment belonged openly to her.

He touched his forehead to hers again.

“Still me,” he murmured.

Then he kissed her once more, as though giving her the opportunity to confirm it for herself.

Lenora’s first instinct was not to answer.

It was to watch him.

She had spent the last several minutes trying to reconcile two truths that refused to contradict one another. The man standing in front of her looked unfamiliar in ways she had not expected, yet every expression crossing his face belonged so completely to her husband that the unfamiliarity never lasted longer than a heartbeat before something else replaced it. The crooked pull at the corner of his mouth when he knew he was losing an argument. The patient amusement softening his eyes whenever she reacted more dramatically than either of them had anticipated. The tiny crease between his brows whenever he realized he had accidentally created more work for himself.

The beard had disappeared.

Jack had not.

When he admitted he hadn’t realized how attached she was to it, her chest tightened with a tenderness she hadn’t expected to find beneath all the teasing. She hadn’t realized it either. Not until she’d walked into the bathroom expecting to ask why he’d vanished in the middle of folding laundry and instead found a face her hands remembered from photographs more than memory.

Her fingertips remained where he’d guided them, resting lightly against his cheeks. They moved almost absentmindedly now, not searching anymore, simply learning. The smoothness still surprised her. Every slow pass of her thumb felt almost too direct, her skin meeting his without the familiar resistance she’d unconsciously associated with home.

She smiled despite herself.

“I know it’ll come back.”

Her voice came quietly, the laughter from a few moments earlier settling into something softer.

“I was never worried about that.”

The promise of a week, then two, pulled another smile from her, and she gave the smallest shake of her head.

“You keep talking like I’m planning a memorial service.”

Warm afternoon light drifted farther across the bathroom floor as a cloud moved outside, brightening the vanity for a moment before settling again. Somewhere beyond the bedroom window another lawn mower started two streets over, its distant hum barely reaching the house. The curtains stirred once in the breeze. From the hallway came nothing but the steady hush of the rain machine outside Charlie’s room, the familiar sound blending so completely into the afternoon that she’d almost stopped noticing it.

Nap time held.

She listened while he talked about Rhett and Charlie, and every new possibility only made the picture sharper in her mind. Rhett stopping in the doorway. Rhett narrowing his eyes. Rhett looking between them with all the solemn suspicion a three-year-old could summon.

By the time Jack reached postcards from a vacationing beard, she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing again.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

She drew a slow breath that did nothing to steady her.

“If you tell him your beard went on vacation, he’s going to ask where.”

Her smile widened.

“And then he’ll want us to go get it.”

She could already hear the questions.

How did it leave?

Did it pack clothes?

Could it come home after dinner?

The thought warmed her until another laugh escaped before she could stop it.

When he became suddenly authoritative about never discussing the day, her eyebrows lifted with exaggerated innocence, though the corners of her mouth betrayed her almost immediately.

“So now we’re keeping secrets from our children?”

She looked at him for another long moment before her expression softened again.

“No.”

The answer came gently.

“We’re keeping you from buying a tiny fake beard for a stuffed dinosaur because you feel guilty.”

She knew him too well.

If Rhett looked genuinely heartbroken, Jack would move mountains to repair it. If that required constructing an elaborate explanation involving beards, vacations, or official police business, he would commit to it with the same sincerity he brought to departmental briefings.

The realization made her heart ache with affection.

When he took her hands and placed them deliberately against his face again, she felt the quiet vulnerability hidden beneath the humor. It wasn’t insecurity. Jack had never been vain. It was something simpler than that. He was placing the change in her hands and trusting her not to make him regret it.

Her thumbs slowed.

She looked at him carefully.

“I don’t hate it.”

She refused to let that misunderstanding linger.

“I miss your beard.”

There was a difference.

“I miss reaching for you without thinking and knowing exactly what my hand is going to find.”

Her gaze stayed on his.

“I miss kissing you the way I’ve kissed you for years.”

She smiled faintly.

“My hands are just… catching up.”

The words felt truer than anything she’d said since she’d walked into the bathroom.

When he joked that she’d married the beard, an incredulous laugh slipped out before she could stop it.

“Oh, absolutely not.”

She leaned back just enough to see all of him again, her hands never leaving his face.

“I married the man who somehow turned trimming his beard into a complete structural collapse.”

The warmth in her eyes deepened.

“I married the man who would rather file an incident report than admit he couldn’t see one side of his own face without his glasses.”

She smiled wider as another thought arrived.

“And I definitely married the man who thinks ‘command decision’ is an acceptable explanation for shaving off his entire beard.”

The laughter faded naturally, leaving something quieter behind.

“You’ve always been my Jack.”

She traced the faint scar near his chin with the pad of her thumb, lingering there for a second because she hadn’t seen it clearly in years.

“I just forgot this part of your face was here.”

Her eyes lifted to his again.

“So… yes.”

She smiled with affectionate resignation.

“I prefer the beard.”

The admission came easily because neither of them had to protect the other from the truth.

“But you’re still the man I fell in love with.”

She rose onto her toes just enough to brush a gentle kiss against his forehead, lingering there for a heartbeat before settling back onto her heels.

“And when Rhett wakes up…”

A helpless grin spread across her face all over again.

“…I’m going to do my absolute best to tell him you’re his father.”

She paused, already laughing.

“I just can’t promise I’ll keep a straight face while I do it.”

Lenora watched the smile spread across his clean-shaven face, and the unfamiliarity she’d been mourning all afternoon quietly surrendered to something else.

Not acceptance.

Affection.

The expression changed him in ways she hadn’t expected. Without the beard softening it, every ounce of amusement reached his eyes immediately. She could see every tiny movement around them, every restrained laugh, every piece of warmth he’d always carried but that now sat entirely uncovered.

It was almost unfair.

He was still beautiful.

Just…

Different.

Her hands remained cupping his face long after he’d finished speaking, thumbs wandering slowly over his cheeks with the same absent curiosity that had begun the moment she’d touched him. She wasn’t searching for the beard anymore. She knew it wasn’t there. Instead, she found herself memorizing this version of him because, whether she liked it or not, it would be hers for the next several days.

When he brushed his cheek deliberately against hers again, she couldn’t stop the little smile that escaped.

“Oh, you’re absolutely insufferable.”

The words carried no weight beyond affection.

“You’ve been clean-shaven for all of…” She tipped her head as though calculating. “…ten minutes, and somehow you’ve already decided this is your entire personality.”

A quiet laugh escaped her.

She loved that.

She loved him making ridiculous arguments simply because they amused him. She loved the certainty that he would commit to every one of them with the seriousness of a police report until she laughed hard enough to give him away.

He’d always done that.

Her gaze lingered on his mouth for a second before lifting back to his eyes.

“You know what your problem is?”

Her smile deepened.

“You think because your face is smooth now, you’re suddenly going to win every disagreement.”

She gave the smallest shake of her head.

“That isn’t how marriage works, Lieutenant.”

The title rolled off her tongue with teasing familiarity.

“It just means I can kiss you without beard burn for a week.”

The realization arrived halfway through the sentence.

Her eyebrows lifted.

“…Well.”

She considered him again with exaggerated seriousness.

“There is one point in your favor.”

The warmth in her expression softened until teasing gave way to something quieter.

She loved him.

The fact sat inside every look she gave him, every touch that lingered longer than necessary, every unconscious step she took toward him instead of away. It had never depended on whether he had a beard or not, but she understood now why the change had startled her so deeply.

His face was one of the landscapes of her life.

She knew every familiar line without thinking.

Now she simply had a new version to learn.

Her hands slipped slowly from his cheeks until they rested on his shoulders. The cotton of his T-shirt was still faintly warm from the shower beneath the cooler dampness lingering in his hair. She smoothed her palms down his arms once before letting them slide back up again.

Then, without thinking herself out of it, she looped both arms around his neck.

The movement brought her closer until barely any space remained between them.

She smiled up at him.

“You’re too tall.”

It wasn’t a complaint.

It never had been.

She rose onto the balls of her feet anyway, stretching as far as she comfortably could, but it still wasn’t enough. The familiar height difference made her laugh under her breath.

“You come down here.”

Her voice dropped into something softer, affectionate enough to feel almost private despite the open bathroom door and the sleeping children down the hall.

“I’ve spent the last five minutes inspecting your face.”

Her fingers laced loosely behind his neck, gently encouraging him downward instead of climbing higher herself.

“I think I’ve earned a proper kiss.”

The request came with a smile that reached her eyes.

“On my level this time.”

Jack looked down at her for one measured second.

The request itself was innocent enough. The expression accompanying it was not.

Her arms rested around his neck, fingers loosely linked behind him, her body stretched toward his with the familiar determination of a woman who had spent eight years refusing to let six inches of height become an obstacle she could not negotiate. The afternoon light caught along the curve of her cheek and the quiet amusement in her eyes. She was smiling, but there was intention beneath it—warm, affectionate, and just challenging enough to make compliance feel less like surrender than opportunity.

Jack’s hands settled at her waist.

He could have bent.

That was what she expected. He knew the exact movement: one hand finding the small of her back, his shoulders lowering until their mouths met somewhere between their natural heights. They had kissed that way thousands of times—in kitchens, doorways, parking lots, beside sleeping children and beneath porch lights. He had learned how far to lean before she rose to meet him and how her fingers tightened at the back of his neck when she wanted him closer than posture comfortably allowed.

But she had specified her level.

Jack’s mouth curved.

“No.”

The refusal came softly, carrying far too much satisfaction to resemble denial.

Before the faint surprise in her expression could become a question, he tightened his hands around her waist and lifted.

The movement required almost no effort. One moment her feet rested against the cool bathroom tile; the next, the floor disappeared beneath them. Jack felt her arms tighten reflexively around his neck as he brought her upward, her breath catching in a small sound that warmed him more effectively than the lingering steam.

He did not stop until their eyes were level.

“There,” he murmured.

His voice had lowered, the word carrying through the narrow space between their mouths. One arm shifted beneath her, securing her weight against him while his other hand spread broadly along her back. Lenora fit against his chest with practiced ease, her body responding before thought could intervene, knees drawing naturally around his hips as though being lifted by her husband in the middle of an ordinary afternoon required no further discussion.

Jack’s smile deepened.

“Problem solved.”

The clean shave made the expression feel almost indecently visible. He could feel every part of it exposed beneath her scrutiny—the amusement gathering beside his eyes, the quiet confidence at the corner of his mouth, the pleasure he took in watching surprise give way to warmth across her face.

For all her earlier mourning, she did not appear especially distressed now.

Jack adjusted his hold, bringing her closer until the thin layers of their clothing did little to disguise the heat between them. Her damp palms had left faint traces along his shoulders. The soft cotton of her shirt gathered beneath his fingers at her back. His hair remained cool from the shower where her wrists brushed near the nape of his neck, but the rest of him had warmed quickly under her attention.

He held her there without strain, allowing the new perspective to settle.

At eye level, Lenora looked momentarily startled by the equality she had demanded and received. Jack had spent years looking down into her face, learning the way her expressions shifted upward toward him. Now her gaze met his directly, nowhere to travel but straight through.

It affected him more than he expected.

He could see every small detail: the laughter still lingering near her lashes, the faint flush the bathroom warmth had brought into her cheeks, the softness that appeared whenever she looked at him long enough to forget she had been teasing. The closeness erased any need to interpret. Her affection sat openly before him.

Jack’s thumb moved once against her back.

“You said your level.”

The defense was unnecessary, but he offered it with grave reasonableness.

“You should be more precise when issuing instructions.”

His gaze lowered briefly to her mouth.

“Especially to a lieutenant.”

The title she had used against him returned warmer in his voice, less professional rank than private joke. At work, instructions required clarity because uncertainty could cost something. Here, ambiguity simply gave him room to interpret her request in the way he liked best.

And Jack liked this considerably.

He liked the instinctive way she held him, the trust required to let the floor vanish without warning. He liked that her body had not gone rigid or demanded immediate release. She knew his strength. Knew he would never let her slip. Knew being lifted by him was not a display of control but a playful solution offered by the man she had accused of being too tall.

Jack turned slightly and carried her the short distance toward the vanity.

He moved slowly enough that she understood what he intended before the edge of the counter touched the backs of her thighs. Then he lowered her onto it with careful control, keeping one arm around her until he was certain she was settled.

The counter brought her almost exactly to his height.

Jack remained between her knees.

“That better?”

He already knew the answer. Her arms stayed around his neck, and her body remained angled toward his rather than using the counter to create distance. The position had changed the shape of their height difference without removing it entirely. He still stood broad and solid between her legs, but now her face met his without either of them stretching.

He rested both hands at her hips.

The bathroom suddenly felt smaller.

Nothing else had changed. The trimmer remained on the counter behind her, surrounded by the evidence of his failed attempt at maintenance. Rhett’s dinosaur shirt lay safely away from the damp floor. Sunlight warmed the bedroom beyond the open door. The rain machine continued its steady hush down the hall, and neither child stirred.

Yet the room had narrowed around the place where Lenora sat and Jack stood.

His attention moved over her slowly.

“You’ve spent all afternoon inspecting me,” he said. “I think I’m entitled to review the findings.”

One hand left her hip and rose to her face. Jack traced the curve of her cheek with the back of his fingers, mirroring the way she had explored his newly bare skin. Her face was infinitely familiar beneath his touch. He knew where softness gave way to the delicate line of her jaw, where a kiss would make her smile and where another would make her forget the argument she had intended to finish.

He brushed his thumb near the corner of her mouth.

“Still ridiculously handsome?”

The question carried no genuine need for reassurance. Her gaze had already answered it too many times. Jack simply wanted to hear how she would handle the evidence now that he had placed himself close enough to make honesty inconvenient.

His mouth shifted faintly.

“Or did lifting you void the original assessment?”

He leaned nearer, stopping just before their lips met.

“I’d like to know before I file anything official.”

Her breath touched his clean-shaven cheek. Jack felt the difference with renewed clarity. There was no roughness between them, nothing to interrupt the warmth of her skin. The novelty had already begun working in his favor despite her declared loyalty to the beard.

He turned his face slightly, letting his jaw glide slowly along hers.

The contact was deliberate.

Jack felt the small change in her breathing and allowed himself a quiet look of satisfaction.

“Thought so.”

He kissed her cheek first.

Not because he intended restraint, but because the smoothness had become a point he was determined to prove. His mouth pressed warmly against the place his beard ordinarily scratched, lingering before moving closer to her jaw. Another kiss followed. Then one beneath it, slow enough for her to feel the full absence of friction.

His hands tightened lightly at her hips.

“You can miss it,” he murmured against her skin. “I’m not unreasonable.”

The claim was debatable.

“But you’re going to appreciate the temporary arrangement.”

He lifted his mouth and met her eyes again.

The expression on her face nearly broke his composure. Affection remained there, but the earlier disappointment had been replaced by something much more useful. She was still learning the changed face beneath her hands, only now the lesson seemed less like adaptation and more like discovery.

Jack’s hand slid along her side to the small of her back, drawing her closer to the counter’s edge.

“You wanted a proper kiss.”

His voice softened, though the warmth beneath it deepened.

“I’m trying to be thorough.”

He gave her barely enough time to smile before his mouth found hers.

The first contact was gentle only because Jack wanted to feel the difference clearly. Her lips met his without the familiar scrape along their edges, and the softness registered with startling immediacy. He had kissed her twice already since shaving, but those had carried laughter, reassurance and the novelty of being examined.

This kiss carried intention.

Jack angled his head, one palm holding the back of her neck while the other remained firm at her waist. Her arms tightened around him, and the response went through his body like a current. He felt the exact moment she stopped treating his clean-shaven face as a marital inconvenience and began using it.

Her mouth moved against his with greater confidence.

Jack answered.

He drew her closer until the counter supported only part of her weight and his arm held the rest. The kiss deepened without becoming hurried, its heat built from familiarity rather than surprise. He knew how she breathed when she wanted more and how the slight tilt of her head changed the pressure between them. He knew the quiet sound she swallowed when his thumb moved beneath her ear.

The missing beard altered the texture, not the knowledge.

If anything, it made every detail sharper.

Her lips felt softer. Her fingers against the newly exposed line of his jaw sent sensation cleanly through him instead of disappearing into hair. When she shifted closer, Jack could feel the warmth of her cheek against his with no barrier at all.

He had spent the past ten minutes regretting the grooming decision.

He was beginning to reconsider.

Jack broke the kiss slowly, taking the lower curve of her mouth with him for a final second before allowing space to return. His forehead settled against hers, his breathing deeper than it had been moments earlier.

The house remained quiet.

He listened automatically through the open door. The rain machine continued unchanged. No movement sounded from either room. Rhett and Charlie remained asleep, blissfully unaware that their father’s missing beard had initiated a private demonstration in the bathroom.

Jack’s gaze returned to Lenora.

“Proper enough?”

His voice was roughened now, the playfulness surviving beneath the altered cadence.

He could have stepped back.

Instead, he kept himself positioned between her knees, one hand resting at the back of her neck while the other traced a slow path along her hip. The cotton beneath his palm warmed quickly.

She had accused him of making the clean shave his entire personality.

Jack saw no reason to disappoint her.

“You know,” he said, studying her as though considering a serious problem, “you may have underestimated the aerodynamic benefits.”

His thumb moved once at her waist.

“Less resistance.”

The look she gave him threatened laughter.

Jack maintained complete seriousness.

“More efficient kissing.”

He paused.

“Potentially improved endurance.”

The final claim arrived with enough deliberate meaning to warm the air between them all over again. Jack watched recognition move across her expression and felt his own mouth curve.

He was enjoying himself far too much.

Nap time rarely offered this kind of unhurried privacy. Usually one of them spent it moving quickly through whatever could not be completed with children underfoot. Laundry. Reports. Coursework. Repairs requiring tools Rhett considered communal property. The quiet arrived with an expiration neither parent could predict, making rest feel like a gamble and intimacy something often postponed until bedtime.

Today, both children had surrendered deeply enough that the house felt briefly suspended.

Jack knew better than to trust the silence completely.

He also knew better than to waste all of it.

His fingers moved into the hair at the back of Lenora’s head, holding her gently while his gaze wandered over her face again.

“You look less devastated.”

The observation carried satisfaction.

“Still grieving, obviously.”

His thumb brushed the soft skin beneath her ear.

“But functional.”

He kissed the small pout that tried to return, brief and teasing.

“I’m proud of your resilience.”

Another kiss followed, this one nearer the corner of her mouth.

“I know this transition has been difficult.”

His mouth moved to the other corner.

“I appreciate your courage.”

By the time he reached her lips again, amusement had loosened her against him. Jack smiled into the kiss, feeling her laughter warm the space between their mouths. The sound remained quiet, controlled for the sake of sleeping children, which only made it more intimate.

He loved making her laugh like this.

Not the bright social laugh she offered in crowded rooms or the exasperated sound that followed one of Rhett’s impossible explanations. This belonged to him—the low, breath-softened laughter that moved through her body when they stood too close and shared something too ridiculous for anyone else to understand fully.

Jack drew back enough to look at her.

The clean shave had changed what she saw.

It had not changed the way she looked at him.

That distinction settled warmly beneath his ribs.

Her gaze still moved over him with the same open affection that had accompanied years of marriage. She had noticed the scar near his chin, the shape of a jaw hidden from daily view, the way his smile appeared without the beard softening its edges. She was not trying to recover the old face anymore.

She was making this one hers too.

Jack’s expression gentled.

“You know what I like?”

His voice lost some of its teasing, though the physical closeness kept the words from becoming solemn.

“You didn’t pretend.”

He brushed his thumb across her cheek.

“You walked in, hated the decision immediately and told me exactly what you missed.”

A faint smile remained at his mouth.

“And then you stayed close enough to learn it anyway.”

That was Lenora. She did not protect love by becoming dishonest. She could prefer the beard and still cup his bare face with both hands. She could laugh at his mistake while making certain he knew the man beneath it remained hers. Her truth never threatened him because it arrived without cruelty or manipulation.

Jack had spent years knowing he could trust her reactions, even when they were not the ones he hoped for.

Especially then.

“You never make me guess what loving me requires,” he said quietly.

His hand settled along her jaw.

“That’s one of my favorite things about you.”

The admission surprised him with its depth. The afternoon had begun with a failed trim and become an argument about facial hair. Yet beneath it sat one of the central comforts of their marriage: Lenora did not force him to decode affection hidden behind performance. She loved him directly. Teased directly. Disagreed directly.

Wanted him directly.

Jack’s gaze dropped toward her mouth again.

“That,” he added, letting warmth return, “and the fact that you apparently find basic financial responsibility seductive.”

His grin became more visible without the beard.

“I’m going to start leaving mortgage statements around the bedroom.”

He could already imagine her response.

Jack lowered his mouth to her neck before she could deliver it, kissing the warm skin just beneath her jaw. His clean cheek moved against her without scratching, and he felt her fingers tighten behind his neck.

“Maybe bring up the credit score,” he murmured.

Another kiss.

“Really set the mood.”

The quiet laugh that escaped her pressed against his mouth.

Jack smiled there.

He had missed this without realizing it. Not affection—they touched constantly, found one another in passing, kissed across kitchen counters and beside car doors. He had missed time. The ability to remain inside a playful moment without one of them already turning toward the next task.

The laundry stayed folded in unfinished stacks.

The bathroom still required cleaning.

Neither mattered.

Jack slipped both hands beneath her thighs and lifted her from the counter again.

The movement came without warning but not without care. Lenora’s arms tightened around his neck as he drew her against him, returning her completely to his hold. Her legs found their place around his waist more securely this time.

Jack watched the surprise become laughter near her eyes.

“You said your level,” he reminded her.

His hands supported her easily.

“I didn’t say you could come back down.”

He carried her away from the vanity, crossing the bathroom with slow, steady steps into the bedroom. The change in light softened them. Sunlight spilled broadly across the floor and the edge of the bed, illuminating the folded laundry she had abandoned when curiosity drew her down the hall. Tiny floral sleepers, toddler shirts, Jack’s dark socks and Lenora’s softer things had been separated into careful stacks.

He stopped beside the bed but did not lower her immediately.

For a moment, he simply stood holding his wife in the middle of their ordinary room.

The scent of clean laundry mingled with soap and mountain air. Curtains shifted near the cracked windows. A distant child shouted somewhere outside, far enough away to belong to another family’s afternoon. Inside their house, the rain machine kept its steady rhythm.

Jack’s face softened as he looked at her.

The years between Miller’s Tap and this room seemed briefly visible all at once. The young woman who had found reasons to refill drinks. The wife who knew the shape of his face by touch. The mother who had folded their daughter’s clothes while their son slept in a football jersey downstairs.

He had lost a beard.

Nothing important had changed.

Jack bent his head and pressed a slow kiss to her mouth, holding her securely enough that she had no reason to think about balance or height.

When he lifted his face again, his eyes carried a quiet warmth beneath the lingering flirtation.

“Your level suits you.”

His thumb moved along the back of her thigh where he held her.

“Though I’m starting to think this was a strategic request.”

He glanced toward the bed, then back to her.

“You knew I’d solve it this way.”

The accusation held no seriousness.

Jack lowered her carefully onto the mattress, following far enough that he remained standing between her knees rather than releasing the intimacy entirely. His palms settled on either side of her against the bed, broad shoulders framing her as he leaned near.

“Very manipulative, Mrs. Callahan.”

His freshly shaven mouth curved inches from hers.

“I may need to conduct a longer interview.”

Jack kissed her again before she could defend herself, slower this time, allowing the quiet afternoon to stretch around them without asking it to become anything more than it was.

For now, neither child woke.

The laundry waited.

And Jack took full advantage of being temporarily aerodynamic.

The floor dropped away so suddenly she gasped, a startled sound that quickly melted into a breathless, throaty laugh. She tightened her arms around his neck, instinctively locking her ankles behind his back as he hauled her upward. The sheer, effortless strength of it sent a hot thrill straight to her core. She looked directly into his eyes, her own sparking with undeniable amusement as she settled securely against his chest.

"I suppose that is one way to handle insubordination," she teased, her voice dropping into a warm, breathy purr now that they were perfectly at eye level. "Brute strength. Very subtle, Jack."

She arched a single, playful brow at his reprimand, her fingers drifting up to lazily brush a stray lock of hair from his forehead, completely unbothered by being suspended in midair.

"Oh, excuse me, Lieutenant. I'll be sure to submit my future kissing coordinates in triplicate. Though, I have to admit, your tactical execution is completely flawless."

She let him carry her the few steps to the vanity, her body humming with the easy way he bore her weight. As he lowered her, she settled onto the cool marble, deliberately using her knees to draw his hips firmly against the edge of the counter. She had zero intention of letting him step back to admire his handiwork.

"Much better," she murmured, sliding her hands over the broad line of his shoulders. "Though you still take up an awful lot of space."

When his thumb brushed her cheek, waiting for her official verdict on his face, she took her time. She let her gaze drag deliberately down to his mouth, lingering on the unfamiliar, bare curve of his lips before lazily meeting his eyes again.

"The lifting definitely earned you bonus points. As for the face... it’s growing on me. I suppose you're still ridiculously handsome. Go ahead and file the paperwork. I'll sign off on it."

He leaned in, his smooth jaw gliding intentionally against hers, and she betrayed herself with a soft, involuntary sigh. The utter lack of friction was a shock to her system. Her fingers curled instinctively into the soft cotton of his shirt at his back, pulling him just a fraction closer.

"Smug looks entirely too natural on you. Temporary being the operative word here... but I might be willing to explore the perks of this smooth new territory while it lasts."

His kisses trailed hot and friction-less down her jawline, and she tilted her head to give him unfettered access, a sudden shiver chasing down her spine.

"By all means," she whispered against his mouth, her eyes fluttering shut as she melted into his hold. "Don't let me stop you from a thorough investigation."

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers in the quiet bathroom, she offered a flushed, deeply satisfied smile, her chest rising and falling heavily against his.

"It's a solid start. But I think I’m going to need a little more evidence."

She bit her lower lip to hold back a laugh, her fingers lightly trailing down the newly exposed skin of his neck to press against his racing pulse as he rattled off his ridiculous list of physical and aerodynamic advantages.

"Endurance, hm?" she challenged, her voice low and rich with amusement. "That’s a very bold claim to make while our children are fast asleep down the hall. Are you prepared to back up that data?"

As he laid on the mock sympathy, praising her "resilience" and "courage" through her grief over his beard, the laughter she’d been holding back finally bubbled over, warm and quiet against his lips.

"I'm a survivor, what can I say? It takes a remarkably strong woman to cope with a husband who spontaneously shaves off half his personality. But I'm powering through."

Then, he had to ruin the tender, quiet moment by threatening to leave mortgage statements around the bedroom to set the mood. She buried a helpless, stifled laugh in the crook of his neck, her hands tightening affectionately in his hair.

"Oh, God, stop. If you whisper about an excellent debt-to-income ratio right now, I am going to completely lose my mind. Just... keep kissing me."

Swept off the counter without a second's warning, she gasped softly but didn't loosen her grip for a second. She buried her face against his neck, resting her forehead against his temple as he carried her smoothly down the hall. The scent of his soap mingled with the quiet stillness of the house, and she tightened her legs around his waist.

"I don't recall asking to be put down. Carry on."

When her back finally hit the mattress, the afternoon sunlight catching the edges of the room, she refused to relinquish her hold on him. As he framed her with his broad shoulders and playfully accused her of manipulation, she reached up. Sliding her hands down his chest, she gripped his shirt and pulled him those last few necessary inches closer until she could feel his breath on her lips.

"I plead the fifth," she murmured softly, her eyes darkening with unapologetic focus. "But you're more than welcome to interrogate me for as long as nap time allows."

Jack went very still above her.

Not because the invitation surprised him, but because the phrasing did. For one suspended second, his clean-shaven face held the unmistakable expression of a man who had just been handed exactly the kind of opening he should probably be mature enough not to exploit.

Then the corner of his mouth lifted. Slowly. Dangerously.

“You plead the fifth.” The repetition came low and thoughtful, as though he were considering an actual procedural complication rather than the fact that his wife was lying beneath him, her fingers twisted into the soft cotton of his grey t-shirt.

His weight shifted, the dark, comfortable fabric of his sweatpants settling heavily into the cradle of her thighs. “Interesting strategy.”

One hand remained planted beside her head, holding the bulk of his weight off her body. The other moved to the hem of her cream ribbed tank top, his callused thumb sliding beneath the tight fabric to graze the warm, bare skin of her stomach. The sharp spike in her pulse registered instantly beneath his touch.

“You know,” Jack continued, his voice dropping into the quiet, patient cadence that made nervous rookies sweat, “pleading the fifth protects you from self-incrimination.” He gripped the hem of her tank top and dragged it slowly upward, his knuckles brushing the sensitive curve of her ribs. “It does not prevent the investigating officer from gathering independent evidence.”

He didn’t give her time to laugh. Jack bent and kissed her, his mouth settling over hers with a warm, demanding confidence. The absence of his beard changed everything—the friction was sharper, the slide of his lips against hers entirely direct and incredibly intimate. He swallowed her startled gasp, his tongue sweeping into her mouth with the exact same thorough, methodical patience he applied to everything else he cared about.

Consent between them rarely required formality. It required noticing. Jack noticed that she hadn't released his grey t-shirt. He noticed her hips tilting instinctively up into his. He noticed that her earlier challenge about endurance was still there, waiting to be answered.
He broke the kiss just enough to drag a breath, his lips hovering a millimeter from hers. “Since the subject has declined to cooperate…”

In one swift, fluid motion, Jack pulled her ribbed tank top completely over her head and tossed it to the floor. The sudden exposure left her flushed and bare in the dim afternoon light, her chest heaving as the cool air hit her skin.

“…I’m going to have to proceed with a search.”

Jack’s eyes darkened, the playful lieutenant vanishing beneath the overwhelming, territorial hunger of a husband looking at his wife.

“Full body,” he murmured.

He lowered his head, bypassing her mouth to press a hot, wet kiss directly to the soft swell of her breast. Lenora arched off the mattress, a fractured sound tearing from her throat. Jack immediately swept his broad hand over her mouth, capturing the noise against his palm.

“Shh,” he warned softly, his breath hot against her damp skin. “Nap time, Mrs. Callahan. If you wake them, the interrogation is over.”

The dark thrill in her widened eyes was all the permission he needed. Jack moved lower, his tongue laving a wet, heavy path down the center of her stomach. His fingers found the elastic waistband of her dark blue lounge shorts. He didn't waste time with teasing anymore. The banter had served its purpose; now, all he wanted was access. He hooked his fingers into the soft fabric of her shorts and her silk underwear beneath, dragging them both forcefully down her bare legs and tossing them off the edge of the bed.

Stripped completely bare, Lenora lay exposed beneath him, the soft wash of the rain machine down the hall the only sound competing with their ragged breathing. Jack moved backward, settling his heavy, sweatpant-clad frame entirely between her spread thighs.
He gripped the backs of her knees, his broad hands warm and rough as he pushed her legs wider, opening her completely to his view. She was already slick, her inner thighs trembling slightly as the cool air hit her wet heat. The visual struck Jack like a physical blow, a surge of pure, primal devotion flooding his chest.

“Let’s check for concealed evidence,” he rasped, his voice entirely stripped of its humor, reduced to a low, gravelly vibration.

He leaned forward, his broad shoulders settling between her knees. The first deliberate brush of his hot breath against her swollen, weeping center made her entire body jerk.
“Strictly by the book,” Jack whispered right against her slick folds.

Then he opened his mouth and settled his tongue directly over her clit.

Lenora’s hips bucked off the mattress, a muffled, frantic whine trapped behind her teeth as she bit down hard on her own knuckle. Jack caught her hips with his massive hands, his thick fingers digging possessively into her soft flesh, anchoring her flat against the bed. He didn't let her retreat. He pressed his face deeply into her wetness, opening his mouth wider to consume her, his tongue executing a broad, flat, devastatingly slow upward stroke that dragged through her slick heat and pinned the sensitive bundle of nerves against her hood.

She tasted incredible—a chaotic, intoxicating blend of clean sweat, salt, and the heavy, musky sweetness of her own desperate arousal. Jack groaned into her thighs, entirely addicted to the flavor. He sank two callused fingers inside her slick channel, stretching her open to give his mouth absolute, unrestricted access.

As he began to thrust his fingers in a slow, deep rhythm, mimicking the heavy penetration he knew she was begging for, his tongue flicked into a rapid, merciless assault right on her most sensitive point.

Lenora’s hands abandoned his t-shirt, her fingers tangling frantically into his short hair, alternately trying to pull him closer and drag him away from the unbearable sensory overload. Jack remained an immovable force. He sucked the swollen bud of her clit into his mouth, applying a firm, pulling suction that made her inner walls spasm violently around his fingers.

She was thrashing now, her heels digging into the mattress, her breath coming in ragged, broken sobs she was desperately trying to keep quiet for the sake of the children sleeping in the next room. The restriction only amplified the heat. Jack ruthlessly used her need for silence against her, increasing the brutal, wet friction of his mouth until she was completely unspooled, shaking violently under his hands.

She tried to speak, a breathless, broken plea for release spilling from her lips as she struggled against the overwhelming tide of sensation.

He pulled back just a fraction of an inch, the wet sheen of her arousal coating his chin and lips. His dark eyes dragged up the length of her trembling body, pinning her flushed, frantic face with a look of absolute, unapologetic dominance.

“You plead the fifth, remember?” he murmured, his thumb brushing a slick, agonizing circle over her clit. “No talking.”

Before she could drag in a breath to object, Jack buried his face between her thighs again, entirely devoted to finishing the interrogation.

Lenora felt the sudden stillness in him like a held breath against her own. The shift in his expression registered first as heat low in her belly, then as a slow uncoiling of something sharper, something that made her fingers tighten harder in the soft cotton of his shirt. When the corner of his mouth lifted she watched it happen from inches away, the familiar dangerous curve that always meant he had decided exactly how far he intended to take her.

His weight settled deeper between her thighs and the pressure of it pulled a soft sound from her throat before she could stop it. The first drag of his thumb beneath the hem of her tank top sent a bright, involuntary shiver across her stomach. She arched into the touch without meaning to, the cool air of the room suddenly too thin.

When he spoke again the low cadence of his voice moved through her like another kind of touch. She felt the fabric of her top begin its slow climb, knuckles brushing the undersides of her ribs, and the knowledge of where he was going made her pulse hammer harder beneath his hand. The kiss that followed stole whatever answer she might have formed. The clean slide of his bare mouth against hers was startling in its directness; she opened for him on a sharp inhale and felt the careful, thorough sweep of his tongue map her completely. Her hips rolled up of their own accord, seeking more of the heavy press of him, the challenge she had thrown earlier still burning under her skin.

The sudden loss of her top left her gasping against the cooler air. She felt the flush rise across her chest and throat as his eyes darkened, the playful edge gone, replaced by something older and far more claiming. The first hot, wet press of his mouth to her breast dragged a fractured sound from her that he silenced with the broad warmth of his palm. The warning against her damp skin only tightened the coil of heat between her legs. She held his gaze as he moved lower, every slow, deliberate stroke of his tongue down the center of her stomach lighting new nerves she hadn’t known were waiting.

When he stripped the last of the fabric from her body the sudden total exposure left her trembling. She felt the rain machine’s soft hush from down the hall and the ragged edge of her own breathing and nothing else. The firm push of his hands against the backs of her knees opened her fully to him; the cool air against her slick heat made her inner thighs twitch. She watched his face as he looked at her, the pure hunger there pulling a fresh rush of wetness from her body.

The first brush of his breath against her swollen center jerked her entire frame. Then his mouth settled over her and thought fractured. The broad, slow upward drag of his tongue pinned her clit beneath firm pressure and her hips tried to buck; his hands locked her down hard against the mattress. She bit into her own knuckle to keep the sound trapped, the copper taste of it sharp against the overwhelming wet heat of his mouth. Two thick fingers sank into her and the stretch of them dragged a broken, muffled cry from behind her teeth. He worked her with the same relentless patience he gave everything that mattered to him—deep, measured thrusts of his fingers matched to the merciless flick of his tongue—until her legs shook and her fingers scrambled for purchase in his short hair.

She was past words, past any careful strategy. The need to stay quiet for the sleeping children only sharpened every sensation until she was shaking under him, heels digging into the sheets, the pressure building so fast and high she thought she might break open. When he pulled back just enough for her to drag air she tried to form a plea, something desperate and incoherent, but the dark look he gave her from between her thighs stole the rest of it.

The reminder of her own earlier words landed like another stroke of his tongue. Before she could protest he returned to her, mouth sealing over her again with absolute intent, and Lenora’s head fell back against the pillow as the interrogation continued.

The sudden absence of the broad pressure sealing her mouth left the air rushing back into her lungs in a sharp, silent gasp. She bit down hard on her lower lip the instant his palm lifted, the sharp edge of her teeth anchoring the frantic sounds that still threatened to spill free. Silence held by force of will alone, every muffled whimper trapped behind the press of her own mouth as his returned to her with undiminished hunger.

She could not remember the last time his face had been pressed so completely against her center without the soft interference of his beard. The clean, direct slide of skin and the unfiltered heat of his mouth felt almost startling in its intimacy, every stroke landing sharper, wetter, more immediate than she had grown used to. The lack of that familiar texture only heightened the way he claimed her, the way his tongue worked her open without anything between them.

Her free hand drifted down across the soft plane of her stomach without conscious thought. Fingers traced the faint silvery lines that still marked where their children had stretched her, the quiet self-consciousness that usually lived in those marks rising for a fleeting second. In this moment it dissolved completely beneath the relentless devotion of his mouth. He was devouring her as though nothing else existed, worshipping every inch of the body that had carried their family, and the old hesitation simply had no place against the way he made her feel wanted.

Her hips twitched hard against the unyielding hold of his hands as another slow, devastating stroke of his tongue dragged through her. She kept her lip caught between her teeth, the sharp sting of it the only thing keeping the rising cries locked inside while the rest of her body surrendered completely to the interrogation he had no intention of ending.

Her hands found his hair again without thought, fingers sliding into the short strands and settling there with a restless, almost desperate pressure. She rubbed slowly, the motion more for herself than for him, a quiet attempt to stay anchored while the relentless wet heat of his mouth threatened to pull her completely under. Every careful circle of her fingertips against his scalp became a private tether, something solid to hold while the rest of her body threatened to float free of the mattress entirely.

The stretch of his fingers inside her and the unyielding focus of his tongue kept pushing her higher. She kept her lip caught hard between her teeth, the sting of it the only sharp edge left to remind her to stay quiet, while her hands continued their steady, grounding stroke through his hair. The simple contact was all that stood between her and the complete loss of control she could already feel gathering at the edges of her vision.

Jack felt the exact second her hand left the tangled sheets. Without breaking the heavy, devastating rhythm of his mouth, his dark eyes flicked upward through the shadows, tracking the pale flutter of her fingers as they drifted down the soft plane of her stomach. He knew every single inch of her skin blindfolded, and he knew exactly what she was touching the moment her fingertips traced the faint, silvery lines branching across her lower abdomen.

A deep, violent surge of possessiveness hit his chest so hard it nearly cracked his ribs. Those marks were the physical map of his entire world. They were the tangible, permanent evidence of Rhett’s weight and Charlie’s heartbeat, the absolute proof that she had literally stretched herself to the breaking point to build the family currently sleeping down the hall. The idea that she ever felt even a fraction of a second of insecurity over them was unacceptable.

He refused to let her retreat into her own head. Jack released his anchoring, bruised grip on her left thigh, dragging his massive, callused hand up the heated curve of her torso. He didn’t brush her hand away; instead, he covered it entirely. He laced his thick fingers through her slender ones, pressing her palm completely flat against the silver lines before sealing his own heavy, unrelenting warmth over the top of them both. He pinned her hand right there over her stretch marks, applying a firm, grounding pressure that communicated a silent, iron-clad declaration: every single mark on her body was holy ground, and she belonged entirely to him.

The physical reassurance acted like a match dropped into a powder keg. Her hips jerked wildly upward, her incredibly slick, boiling heat clamping down ruthlessly around the two fingers he was steadily, deeply thrusting inside her. Because the familiar, softening barrier of his beard was completely gone, Jack was able to press his bare face entirely flush against her center. The pristine slide of his clean-shaven skin allowed him to bury his mouth deeper than he ever had before, consuming her so completely that he could feel the frantic, shuddering beat of her pulse drumming directly against his own chin.
He looked up the length of her flushed, trembling body and watched her teeth sink fiercely into her swollen bottom lip. The absolute, agonizing restraint she was weaponizing just to obey his command to stay quiet painted a dark, beautiful flush of heat all the way up her chest to her throat.

When her free hand tangled into his hair, Jack let out a low, rough groan that vibrated directly against her weeping clitoris. The restless, desperate pressure of her fingers massaging his scalp sent a heavy, grounding shiver straight down his spine. The profound contrast of it—the soft, incredibly tender circles she was tracing against his head while he systematically and ruthlessly wrecked her lower half—was completely intoxicating. She was using him as a physical tether, anchoring herself to his skull to keep from flying apart completely. Jack leaned heavily into her touch, letting his head press firmly into her palm like a feral creature perfectly domesticated by her hands.

He wanted her to stay exactly there, suspended on that razor-thin wire between total unraveling and absolute silence. Jack increased the brutal, pulling suction of his mouth, his tongue flattening out to aggressively trap the swollen bundle of nerves against her hood. He synchronized the devastating, rapid flick of his tongue with the heavy, unhurried, knuckle-deep thrusts of his fingers, entirely devoted to keeping her locked in that agonizing, breathless space where she was nothing but sensation, heat, and his wife.

The frantic, shuddering contractions of her inner walls began to bear down on his fingers, a chaotic, greedy spasming that telegraphed exactly how close she was to the edge. Jack felt the sudden, desperate spike in her pulse where her hand was trapped beneath his on her stomach, and the sharp, stinging bite of her nails digging into his scalp. She was hovering right on the precipice, a fraction of a second away from completely shattering. Every primal, masculine instinct in his body roared at him to push her over, to increase the brutal suction of his mouth and swallow her climax whole. But an even deeper, more possessive need overrode the urge. He didn't just want to feel her break; he needed to be buried as deeply inside her as physically possible, and he needed to look directly into her eyes when it happened.

With agonizing, deliberate slowness, Jack slowed the rapid flick of his tongue. He withdrew his slick fingers from her tight, weeping channel, leaving a hollow, devastating emptiness that instantly pulled a high, fractured whine from behind her tightly bitten lip. Replacing the blistering heat of his mouth with the cool, conditioned air of the bedroom was an act of sheer, iron-clad discipline. He ignored the frantic, protesting jerk of her hips, dragging his face upward along the soft, trembling expanse of her stomach.

He stopped his ascent exactly where their joined hands rested. Shifting his weight, Jack slowly pulled his broad palm away from hers. He replaced the heavy warmth of his hand with his mouth, pressing a deep, incredibly tender kiss directly into the silver lines branching across her lower abdomen. He lingered there, his lips dragging softly against the physical history of their family, worshipping the stretched skin with a profound, quiet reverence. He wanted to brand the absolute devotion of his touch into her marrow, ensuring that before he wrecked her completely, she knew there wasn’t a single millimeter of her body he didn't view as holy ground.

When he finally dragged his upper body over hers, the harsh, ragged sound of his breathing filled the microscopic space between their faces. Lenora’s eyes were blown wide, dark and dilated with a mix of desperate frustration and a feverish, heavy arousal. Jack didn't give her a chance to form the plea he could see trembling on her swollen lips. He captured her mouth in a deep, consuming kiss, his tongue sliding inside to taste the heavy, intoxicating salt and musk of her own slick heat. As he kissed her, he reached down between their bodies, blindly gripping the thick waistband of his sweatpants and his boxer briefs. With a sharp, impatient violence, he shoved the heavy cotton down his muscular thighs, kicking them completely off his ankles until he was just as bare and exposed in the dim light as she was.

He broke the wet, heavy suction of their kiss just enough to brush his lips against hers, his voice dropping into a low, gravel-heavy murmur. "Not yet," he rasped, his breath mingling with hers. "I want to see you."

Before the denial could fully register in her hazy, overstimulated brain, Jack shifted his massive frame. Gripping her firmly by the hips, he rolled onto his back with a smooth, effortless exertion of power, taking her completely with him. The world tilted, and in a matter of seconds, he had guided her up and over his chest until she was straddling his hips, her bare knees bracketing his thick thighs. The sudden shift in leverage left her sitting high above him, her flushed, beautiful chest heaving as she stared down at him in the shadowed room.

Jack reached down, his large hand wrapping around the thick, aching ridge of his own arousal, and aligned the blunt head perfectly with the slick, weeping entrance to her body. He released himself, moving both of his broad, callused hands up to grip the soft flare of her hips. His thumbs pressed deep into her skin, anchoring her completely. He looked up at her, his pitch-black gaze entirely stripped of the playful lieutenant, leaving only the dark, unyielding focus of a husband demanding absolute surrender.

"Take it," he commanded softly.

He didn't thrust upward to help her. He stayed perfectly, agonizingly still, forcing her to control the descent. When her hips finally gave out to the gravity of her own desperate need, she sank down onto him. The slow, wet slide of her incredibly tight body stretching to accommodate his full, heavy length drew a dark, guttural groan from the very bottom of his lungs. He watched the breath completely leave her chest, her head tipping back as she took every single inch of him, swallowing his massive size until they were pressed entirely flush.

The sudden heavy warmth of his hand covering hers pinned her fingers flat against the soft, marked skin of her stomach. The firm pressure of his palm over the silvery lines sent a sharp, unexpected jolt straight through her core. Her hips jerked hard against the unyielding hold of his mouth and the deep thrust of his fingers, her body clamping down around him in a greedy, involuntary spasm as the quiet insecurity that had lived in those marks dissolved completely beneath the weight of his claim.

She kept her teeth locked on her lower lip, the sharp sting the only thing holding back the sounds that wanted to break free while he pressed even closer, the clean slide of his bare face against her leaving nothing between them. The restless circles of her fingers in his hair tightened as the vibrations of his low groan rolled directly through her most sensitive nerves. She leaned into the contact, using the solid feel of his scalp under her hand as the last tether keeping her from coming apart entirely.

The increased pressure of his mouth and the relentless rhythm of his fingers drove her higher, her walls beginning to flutter and seize around him in frantic, building waves. The spike of her own pulse hammered against the trapped press of their joined hands, and her nails dug harder into his hair as the edge rushed up to meet her.

Then the heat and the fullness vanished all at once. The sudden emptiness left her aching and hollow, a high, fractured sound slipping past her bitten lip before she could catch it. Cool air kissed the oversensitive flesh he had abandoned, and her hips twisted in helpless protest against the loss.

She felt the soft, deliberate press of his mouth against the very marks her fingers had traced. The tenderness of it settled deep in her chest even as her body still trembled with the denial of release, every careful brush of his lips against the stretched skin branding the quiet reverence into her until the last lingering doubt had nowhere left to hide.

When he rose over her the heavy sound of his breathing filled the narrow space between them. She met his gaze with eyes blown wide and dark, the desperate frustration of the unfinished peak tangled with the feverish need still coiling low in her belly. The deep, consuming kiss that followed stole the plea from her tongue; she tasted herself on him, the heavy salt and musk of her own arousal flooding her mouth as his tongue claimed her completely.

The sudden shift of the world tilted her senses. In the space of a breath she found herself astride him, knees bracketing the hard muscle of his thighs, her chest rising and falling hard as she looked down into the shadowed intensity of his face. The blunt, thick heat of him pressed against her entrance, the broad grip of his hands settling on her hips in a silent demand that left no room for hesitation.

The soft command landed low in her belly like another touch. She held his gaze as her body finally gave in to the gravity of her own need, sinking down onto him in one slow, continuous slide. The thick stretch of him filling her completely dragged the air from her lungs; her head tipped back on a silent, broken exhale as she took every inch until they were pressed flush.

The overwhelming fullness of him locked deep inside her left her suspended for one long, trembling breath. Then she began to move. Slow at first, a careful rock of her hips that tested the thick stretch of him with every measured glide. Her body adjusted around the heavy length of him, the slick friction building in quiet waves as she rolled forward and back, learning the exact angle that made her breath catch.

Her hand found his without looking. She guided his palm upward until the broad, callused surface rested against her lips. She pressed a soft, lingering kiss into the center of it, tasting the faint salt of his skin before she finally released the last of her restraint.

The pace changed. She leaned forward, both hands settling firmly against the hard plane of his chest for leverage, and began to ride him in earnest. Each deeper roll of her hips took him farther, the wet slide of her body around him growing more urgent, more certain. She moved with the quiet knowledge that the man beneath her had never once hesitated to show the full measure of his devotion, and every deliberate thrust of her body answered that truth in kind.

She leaned farther forward until her smaller frame hovered directly over the broad expanse of his. Her hands left his chest and settled on either side of his face, palms cradling the clean line of his jaw as she held herself there. The new angle deepened every slow, deliberate thrust; she kept the rhythm steady and unbroken, rolling her hips to take him fully again and again while her eyes stayed locked on his.

She wanted nothing else in that moment. She wanted to watch every shift that crossed his face the exact second he released inside her, to see the control finally leave him while she remained the one who held him there.

Her forehead finally came to rest against his, the last careful distance between them disappearing. Her eyes closed as every thrust drove deeper, finding a place inside her she had never known existed. The sensation was raw—an aching stretch that bordered on pain and melted instantly into sharp, overwhelming pleasure with each roll of her hips.

Her mouth fell open on a silent breath. The words slipped out before she could shape them any other way, low and broken against the shared air between them.

“I love you,” she mumbled, the confession rough with the intensity still building through her.

The heavy, enveloping heat of her sinking down to the hilt tore a ragged, open-mouthed groan from Jack’s chest. For a long, suspended moment, he couldn’t do anything but lie there, completely paralyzed by the exquisite, suffocating grip of her body stretching around his thickest ridge. His callused hands tightened instinctively on her hips, his thumbs digging into the soft flare of her skin as he stared up at her. She was a stunning vision in the shadowed bedroom—flushed, breathing heavily, the dark cascade of her hair falling over her shoulders as she took absolute control of him.

When she lifted his palm to her mouth, the soft, reverent press of her lips against his callused skin sent a violent, bleeding ache of devotion straight through his chest. Then, she released him, planted her smaller hands firmly against the hard, hair-roughened plane of his chest, and began to ride.

The first deep, deliberate roll of her hips nearly sheared his vision to white. The slick, wet friction of her inner walls milking his length was absolute torture. Jack’s jaw clenched tight, the thick muscles in his neck cording as he fought the immediate, primal urge to thrust upward and take over. He let her set the pace, completely captivated by the sight of his wife claiming exactly what she wanted. With every downward stroke, she took the absolute most of him, burying him so deeply he felt the heavy pressure of it radiating in his bones. The wet, rhythmic slide of their bodies sent a surge of blistering heat straight to his groin, the friction building a dark, heavy tension that threatened to snap his restraint entirely.

She leaned over him, her palms framing his jaw, the cool, soft touch of her hands a sharp contrast to the feverish heat radiating between them. As their foreheads touched, the shift in her angle fundamentally changed the penetration. The blunt head of his cock scraped against a deep, impossibly sensitive cluster of nerves, and the way she gasped, melting heavily against his chest, made his heart violently slam against his ribs.

"I love you."

The ragged, broken confession ghosting across his lips shattered the last remaining ounce of his patience.

"I love you," Jack rasped, his voice a low, gravel-heavy vibration that poured directly into the small space between their mouths. He turned his head just enough to press a fierce, bruising kiss into the center of her palm. "More than anything."

He couldn't just lie on his back anymore. The frantic, clawing need to be closer, to consume her completely and push them both over the edge, overtook him. Jack slid his hands from her hips to the small of her back. With a sudden, effortless exertion of his heavy core, he sat up, bringing her entirely with him.

Lenora let out a sharp, breathless gasp as the movement forced him even deeper inside her. Straddling his lap, her bare knees hooked firmly over his thick thighs, they were now completely chest-to-chest. Jack wrapped his left arm tightly around her lower back, his broad hand splaying wide to lock her hips flush against his groin, ensuring she couldn't retreat a single fraction of an inch from the agonizing depth.

Then, he slipped his right hand between their heavily pressed bodies.

His callused fingers found the slick, weeping channel between her thighs, sliding directly up to the swollen, hyper-sensitive bundle of nerves. The second his thumb pressed firmly against her clitoris, Lenora’s spine bowed backward, a beautiful, ruined whimper tearing from her throat. Jack swallowed the sound, capturing her mouth in a dark, open kiss as he began to move.

He pushed his hips upward, setting a brutal, grinding rhythm against her core from the bottom while his thumb worked her in merciless, relentless circles. The dual friction was catastrophic. Her inner walls began to violently spasm, clamping down around his thick length in greedy, shuddering waves that sent a heavy, electric shockwave straight to the base of his spine. The pressure inside him was building with terrifying speed, a blinding, physical ache that demanded immediate release, but he forced his hips to keep driving. His dark eyes locked fiercely onto hers, his thumb pressing harder into her slick heat, entirely focused on pushing his wife completely over the edge before he allowed himself to fall.
