Tyler didn’t speak.

He couldn’t.

Not when she looked at him like that. Not when her voice, quiet and sure, slipped through the air like a match struck in the dark—soft but capable of burning him to the ground.

Take this off.

His heart kicked once, then settled into something low and solid. Not frantic. Not panicked.

Just real.

His fingers found the hem of his hoodie, catching slightly where her hands had already warmed the fabric. He dragged it over his head in one smooth motion, curls ruffling, muscles flexing beneath the dim amber of her bedside lamp. When the hoodie hit the floor, he didn’t move forward yet.

He just stood there.

Let her look.

Let her decide if she still wanted all of him—ink, scars, mess and all.

And when she did?

When her fingers found his again, tugging him forward like this was the most natural thing in the world?

Something in him unspooled.

She wasn’t just letting him in.

She was offering.

Her space. Her trust. Herself.

And he’d be damned if he rushed that.

So he moved slow, the way she deserved.

Let his hand settle against her waist. Let his thumb brush along the sliver of skin above her hip where her dress had shifted. Let his mouth find hers again—kiss warm and reverent, like he was catching up on every moment he’d wasted not holding her like this.

Because this wasn’t about heat.

This was hunger.

For her laugh. Her heart. The soft sound she made when he kissed just beneath her jaw. The way her fingers curled into his chest like she needed something to anchor her too.

He kissed her like it meant something.

Because it did.

Because she wasn’t just letting him back in—she was choosing him.

And that?

That wrecked him in the best damn way.

When her hands moved to the buttons of her dress, he stilled them gently.

Met her eyes.

And said it, quiet and sure, with the kind of weight that didn’t need anything else around it:

“I love you.”

No preamble. No performative charm.

Just the truth.

Then he kissed her again—longer this time, deeper—like he’d never get tired of saying it with his mouth, his hands, his whole damn body if she let him.

Because he didn’t want just this night.

He wanted every version of her.

And he wasn’t going anywhere.

Ellie couldn’t speak either. Words felt inadequate to capture the storm of emotions swirling within her as Tyler stood before her, bare-chested, his skin glowing under the soft amber light of her bedside lamp. She had longed for this moment, even when it seemed out of reach, even when doubt shadowed her thoughts. Now, with it unfolding before her, she didn’t want to risk breaking the spell with clumsy words that couldn’t match the depth of her feelings.

Her hand found his, guiding his fingers with a quiet certainty as they worked together to unbutton her dress. The fabric slipped from her shoulders, pooling at her feet, leaving her in nothing but delicate lace and a shiver of anticipation. Vulnerable, exposed, yet fiercely empowered, she stood in the rawness of her choice. This was hers to claim, and she was ready to embrace it fully.

Tyler’s gaze never wavered, intense and reverent, as he stepped closer, pulling her into the warmth of his embrace. She melted into him, closing her eyes as a soft sigh escaped her lips, her arms winding around his neck. His kiss was a silent promise, a vow etched in the way their lips met, a pledge that he was hers—and she was his—beyond this fleeting night.

But Ellie wanted more than promises. She wanted to show him, to make him feel the depth of what she couldn’t say. Slowly, deliberately, she pulled back from his embrace, her eyes locking with his for a moment before she sank to her knees before him. It wasn’t submission—it was a choice, a declaration. Her hands moved to the waistband of his jeans, fingers working with quiet precision to undo the button and zipper, the sound sharp in the charged silence of the room.

Tyler’s breath hitched, his hands hovering near her shoulders, not to stop her but to steady himself as she tugged his jeans and boxers down just enough. She looked up at him then, her gaze steady and sure, letting him see the intent, the devotion in her eyes. Her hands slid along his thighs, feeling the tension in his muscles, before she leaned forward, her breath warm against him.

When her lips brushed against the tip of his length, soft and tentative at first, a shudder ran through him, his fingers threading gently into her hair. She took her time, exploring him with a deliberate slowness, her tongue tracing along his shaft before she took him deeper into her mouth. The heat of her, the intimacy of the act, made his grip tighten slightly in her hair, not guiding but anchoring, as a low, ragged groan escaped his throat.

Ellie didn’t rush. She savored every reaction—the way his breath stuttered, the subtle flex of his hips, the quiet sounds he couldn’t hold back. This wasn’t just about pleasure; it was about connection, about giving herself in a way that spoke louder than words ever could. Her hands steadied him, one on his thigh, the other wrapped around the base of him, guiding her rhythm as she moved with a tender, unhurried pace.

They didn’t need to hurry. This wasn’t just about the physical act—it was about the love that bound them, the unspoken promises weaving through every touch. And as she continued, drawing him closer to the edge with each careful movement of her mouth, Ellie knew she had never been more certain of anything. This was love, not just for tonight, but for every tomorrow and yesterday, for all the moments they had yet to share.

When his breathing grew ragged, his hand tightening in her hair with a tremor of restraint, she slowed, pulling back just enough to press a soft kiss against him, a silent reassurance. They weren’t done—not by a long shot. But for now, in this quiet, sacred space, they had found something unbreakable. A home in each other, beyond words, beyond time. And that was more beautiful than any fleeting rush of desire could ever be.

Tyler felt the world narrow to the heat of Ellie’s touch, the intoxicating warmth of her breath against him. His chest tightened with a mix of raw desire and overwhelming tenderness as her lips brushed him, tentative at first, then deliberate, pulling him into a haze of sensation he could barely comprehend. A shudder rippled through him, his fingers threading into her hair—not to guide, but to hold on, to anchor himself against the storm of feeling she unleashed. Her slow, reverent exploration drew a ragged groan from deep within him, his breath hitching as she moved with an unhurried grace that threatened to unravel him completely.

He’d never felt anything so intimate, so unguarded. This wasn’t just physical; it was Ellie giving herself in a way that spoke of trust, of love, of a bond forged through years of longing and heartbreak. Her hands steadied him, one on his thigh, the other at his base, grounding him even as she pushed him closer to the edge with every deliberate movement. His hips flexed instinctively, a low growl escaping his throat as he fought to keep control, to savor every second of this sacred connection.

But as his breathing turned jagged, his grip in her hair trembled with the restraint it took not to lose himself entirely. When she slowed, pulling back to press a soft, reassuring kiss against him, he exhaled sharply, his eyes meeting hers in a look that held everything he couldn’t say. They weren’t done—no, not even close. He reached down, his hands finding her arms, gently pulling her to her feet with a tenderness that belied the fire roaring through him.

His lips crashed into hers, the kiss deep and desperate, as if he could pour every unspoken word into it. He guided her backward toward the bed, his hands sliding down her sides to grip her hips as he eased her onto the soft sheets. But before he moved further, he paused, his gaze locked on hers, searching for any hint of hesitation. Finding none, only the fierce certainty in her eyes, he lowered himself between her thighs, his breath warm against her skin.

He started slow, his lips brushing the delicate lace of her underwear before he tugged it aside, revealing her to him. His hands caressed her thighs, parting them gently as he kissed along the sensitive skin, savoring the way she shivered beneath his touch. When his mouth finally found her core, a soft gasp escaped her, and he felt her fingers tighten in his hair. His tongue moved with deliberate care, tracing slow, purposeful circles, tasting her, worshipping her in a way that felt like both a confession and a promise. He wanted her to feel every ounce of his devotion, to know that this was about her—her pleasure, her trust, the way she’d always been his home.

Her breaths grew shorter, her body arching into him, and he could sense her climbing closer to that edge, the tension coiling tight within her. Every sigh, every tremor, fueled him, but he didn’t want this to end just yet—not like this. He pulled back just before she tipped over, his lips pressing a lingering kiss to the inside of her thigh as he lifted his head to meet her gaze. Her eyes were hazy with need, a silent plea he couldn’t ignore.

He shifted, moving up her body, his hands fumbling briefly at his waist as he pushed his jeans and boxers further down, kicking them off. Reaching for the nightstand, he grabbed a condom, his movements steady despite the urgency thrumming through him. He sheathed himself quickly, his eyes never leaving hers, and then he positioned himself above her, bracing on his forearms. Her legs parted for him instinctively, and he settled between them, the heat of her body drawing him in.

“Ellie,” he whispered, her name a reverent murmur against her lips as he kissed her softly. Then, with a slow, deliberate thrust, he entered her, feeling her warmth envelop him, pulling a low groan from his chest. He moved with a steady rhythm, each motion a testament to the years they’d lost and the love they’d found again. His gaze held hers, wanting to see every flicker of emotion, to share in the vulnerability of this moment. This wasn’t just about release; it was about rebuilding, about choosing each other over and over again.

Their bodies moved together, finding an old rhythm in a new way, and Tyler knew—beyond words, beyond doubt—that this was where he belonged. With her. Always.

Ellie felt the weight of him settle over her, not just his body but everything he carried—every ache, every apology, every moment they’d almost let each other go. His skin was warm against hers, grounding her as emotion surged beneath the surface like a tide she couldn’t hold back.

Her breath caught as he kissed her—slow, reverent, like he was trying to memorize the shape of her mouth. Her fingers slid into his hair, a quiet plea to stay close, to keep touching her like this wasn’t just desire but something sacred. And it was. It always had been.

Her body arched instinctively, drawn to his with a hunger that had nothing to do with lust and everything to do with longing. Each motion—his hands, his mouth, the deliberate way he moved—felt like it was stitched from every late-night memory, every quiet moment they’d missed.

When he paused, reaching for the nightstand, Ellie’s hands curled tighter in his curls. She didn’t speak. She didn’t have to. The look in her eyes said everything—please don’t stop. I want this. I want you.

He returned to her with a gentleness that nearly shattered her. And when he finally entered her, the world slipped sideways. A soft sound escaped her throat, raw and breathless, as she wrapped her legs around him, pulling him closer. She blinked, and a tear slipped free—quiet, unexpected. He kissed it away without a word.

They moved together like a rhythm remembered—something that had always existed beneath the surface, waiting to be found again. His name was a whisper on her lips. Her body trembled with the buildup, nerves sparking under every touch, but still—she didn’t rush it. She wanted to feel it. All of it.

The pain. The tenderness. The promise.

And as she looked up into his eyes—those eyes that had once broken her and were now putting her back together—Ellie knew. This was home. Not the place. Him.

Always him.

His name was a whisper against her lips, barely a sound, but he heard it. She could feel it in the way his breath hitched, in the way his hips stuttered just slightly before finding that rhythm again—slow and deliberate, like he didn’t want to miss a second. Like he didn’t want her to forget how much this meant.

And God, she wouldn’t.
Not the way his hands cradled her face like it was something breakable.
Not the way his thumb brushed her cheekbone, tracing the path her tear had left behind.
Not the way he looked at her—like she wasn’t just Ellie, but his Ellie. Still. Always.

Her fingers skimmed the curve of his shoulder, the slope of his back, memorizing him all over again. The ink on his skin, the muscles beneath it, the quiet tremble he didn’t try to hide. He wasn’t holding back. Neither of them were.

She could feel herself unraveling—heat coiling low in her belly, her breath shortening, the world narrowing to nothing but the sound of his voice in her ear. Soft things. Honest things. His forehead pressed to hers, their noses brushing, their breaths tangled.

Tyler's heart pounded in rhythm with the slow, deliberate movements beneath him. Ellie's body trembled beneath his touch, her skin warm against his, and he let out a sound that was half-groan, half-prayer. Every piece of him, every regret, every apology he'd ever made was stitched into this moment—into the way he held her, the tender caress of his lips on her neck, the deep, aching lean that underscored her with every thrust. He whispered her name—over and over, like it could heal her, like it could make her feel all the love he had for her.

Ellie's fingers traced the planes of his back, the curves and curves, giving herself over to the rhythm. He could feel the tension building within her, hear the pant of her breath against his ear, and he wanted to keep her there for as long as he could. To prolong the sweetness of this reunion, to make it last.

His hands slipped down the length of her body, tracing the curves of her hips, the gentle dip of her waist, and he found her trembling beneath his touch. He stopped, leaned up, and captured her lips in a deep, passionate kiss—marking his claim on her, staking his place within her heart.

She broke away, her eyelashes fluttering against his skin as he whispered, "I love you," against her forehead, and he felt the love spilling from her eyes—pooling between them, filling the space around them with warmth. He felt it, all of it, as he moved within her, burying himself in the warm embrace of her body, the softness of her sighs on his skin.

They moved steadily, a dance as ancient and tender as life itself, and in the quiet moments between each deliberate thrust, he could feel it—the years falling away between them, being forgotten in the wonder of this reunion. He could taste it, that promise of forever that lingered on her breath, merging with his in a swirl of tender curves.

He moved closer, his forehead pressing against hers, their noses brushing, their breaths mingling. His heart pounded against her chest, and he let out a sound deep in his throat, shattering the quiet. "Ellie," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.

She looked up at him, her eyes wide and wet, and he saw it—the love, the passion, the promise of endless days spent together. He kissed her again, holding onto her, savoring the taste of her tears, the sweetness of her lips.

He moved inside her, wanting to feel her—to feel the heat between them, to lose himself in it. He wanted to keep her here, bound to him, forever. And he knew he could. He knew this was right. This was home.

Her body tensed, then buckled beneath him, gasping his name, and he felt the sweetness of her release, the tsunami of pleasure washing over him. He surged forward, feeling his own climax swell within him, then expand into a burst of glory that left him breathless.

They stayed like that—connected, sated, enraptured for long moments, before Ellie's hands slipped from his shoulders, her arms sliding around his neck. He pressed his forehead to hers, their noses brushing, their breaths tangled. He kissed her again, gently, lovingly.

"I love you," he whispered against her lips, his voice barely above a murmur.

He curled up around her, feeling the warmth of her body against his, feeling the softness of her breaths against his neck. He felt himself lost in a sea of love, feeling the promise of forever.

"I'm home," he murmured, and as Ellie squeezed him tighter, with a sound of pure contentment, he knew he'd never let go.

Ellie's fingers traced the planes of Tyler's back, the curves and ridges of muscle flexing beneath her touch. A wave of heat washed over her, a mixture of desire and a deep, abiding love that resonated through her very core. She gave herself over to the rhythm of their bodies, the world narrowing to the feel of his skin against hers, the sound of his breath in her ear. She felt the tension coiling within her, a delicious anticipation building with each thrust.

His hands moved down her body, igniting sparks wherever they touched, and Ellie trembled beneath his caress. When he stopped, leaning up to kiss her, she met his lips with a fervor born of years of longing. The kiss was a brand, a promise, a declaration of everything they had found in each other.

When he whispered, “I love you,” against her forehead, Ellie felt tears prick her eyes. She couldn't speak; the words caught in her throat, but the emotion poured from her, a silent affirmation of the love that bloomed between them. His words, his touch, his presence – it was all she had ever wanted.

As he moved within her, Ellie felt a sense of completeness, a feeling of coming home. The years of heartache and separation melted away, replaced by their connection's raw, undeniable truth. She clung to him, her body molding against his, every movement a testament to their bond.

His murmur, his voice thick with emotion, sent shivers down her spine. She looked up at him, her vision blurred with tears, and she saw the depth of his love reflected in his eyes. The kiss that followed culminated everything they had endured, a celebration of the love that had brought them back to each other.

As the pleasure intensified, Ellie's body tensed, then shattered around him. She gasped his name, the sound swallowed by the storm of sensation that consumed her. The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of light and heat and slowly began to coalesce again.

She felt Tyler’s body shudder as he found his release and heard the ragged gasps of his breath against her skin. In the quiet moments that followed, Ellie’s arms wrapped around his neck, holding him close, anchoring herself to the warmth of his body. His forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling, creating a shared space filled with love and contentment.

When he whispered, "I love you," again, Ellie felt a deep sense of peace settle over her. She squeezed him tighter, a soft sound of pure contentment escaping her lips. As he murmured, “I’m home,” Ellie knew he was right, with a certainty that resonated through her very being. They were home. Together. Finally.

“I love you too. Welcome home; I knew you’d find your way back eventually.” She whispered, brushing a few strands of his hair from his face as he looked down at her.

Tyler held her like she was the only real thing in the world.

Like everything else—his doubts, his past, the months he’d spent pretending he wasn’t breaking apart without her—had finally quieted.

Because she was quiet now too. Not guarded. Not bracing. Just… here. Curled into him like she belonged there. Like maybe she always had.

And he couldn’t stop looking at her.

The way her lashes fanned across her cheeks. The way her hair spilled over his arm. The curve of her mouth still a little swollen from kissing him like she meant it—God, she meant it—and he felt like he was holding something holy. Something breakable. Something that had trusted him not to ruin it twice.

His chest ached.

He could still feel the echo of her fingertips on his skin—memorizing him like she hadn’t meant to forget, only to protect herself from remembering too much.

He tucked her closer.

His hand flattened against her back, palm wide and steady like he could anchor them both if he held her tight enough. She fit there so easily. So stupidly perfectly. And he hated that it had taken him this long to see that love didn’t need fireworks to mean forever.

Sometimes it just needed staying.

Stillness.

The right person in the dark.

“I never stopped thinking about you, El,” he whispered again, this time without stumbling. “Not for a single day. Not even when I was trying like hell to pretend I had.”

His throat tightened. He kissed her hair, let it linger, breathed her in like he could somehow get the timing right if he just memorized her enough.

“I’d replay everything,” he admitted, voice rough now. “Every fight. Every time I left instead of talking. Every time I thought you’d be better off without me.”

His fingers found hers again beneath the covers. Laced them together slowly. He felt her squeeze, gentle but sure, and it was like something inside him finally exhaled.

“I don’t need anything else,” he said, quieter now. “Just you. This. Waking up with your hair in my face and your cold-ass feet on my legs.”

He smiled against her temple, and the laugh she gave him in response was small—but real. The kind that cracked through him like light. He hadn’t even realized how badly he’d missed the sound until it was there again, soft and sleepy and tangled up in a second chance.

Tyler rested his forehead against hers, letting the silence stretch this time. Letting it say all the things he didn’t quite know how to. That he loved her. That he always had. That she was the only one who’d ever made him want to be better just by standing still beside him.

He kissed her again—softly, reverently. Like a thank you.

And then he whispered it, barely audible:

“You’re it for me.”

Because she was.

And this time, he was staying to prove it.

Ellie lay still in the quiet aftermath, her body curved against his like a page tucked into a favorite chapter—well-worn, returned to, sacred. The heat between them had settled into something softer now, something steady. Like embers glowing beneath blankets instead of flames reaching toward the ceiling.

She didn’t need to look at him to feel it—his breath in her hair, his arms wrapped around her like punctuation. As if holding her was the only way to finish a sentence he’d never figured out how to end. And maybe it was. Maybe they’d always been fragments trying to find their way back into the same line.

When he said her name, said her real name—not some throwaway nickname, not something careless—Ellie felt it ripple through her like the hush before a summer storm. Gentle. Charged. Meant.

She didn’t cry. But she could’ve. The ache in her chest was that kind—the kind you only get when someone tells the truth you didn’t know you were still waiting to hear.

“I kept your Nirvana T-shirt,” she murmured, voice barely above the quiet stretch of dawn. “Wasn’t trying to be dramatic or anything—I just… couldn’t put it away. It still smelled like you.” She huffed a breath that wasn’t quite a laugh. “Like memories I didn’t know how to wash out.”

It struck her like sunlight through stained glass. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just beautiful in the way that meant it had taken time to make. Time to believe. Time to return.

“And I kept thinking,” she whispered, her fingertips brushing his chest like she was writing something only he could read, “if you ever came back… I wouldn’t make it easy. I’d make you earn it. Make you crawl.” She paused, lips tilted in a wry half-smile against his skin. “But then you showed up, and all I wanted to do was open the door.”

God, she had waited.

Waited through seasons and silences. Through almost-texts and rerouted walks home and every night she fell asleep curled around a ghost.

But now he was here.

Real.

Breathing.

Hers.

His fingers laced through hers under the covers, and Ellie closed her eyes, letting the shape of their hands together become something she memorized. Something she could carry when the world got loud again.

When he whispered You’re it for me, she didn’t answer right away.

Instead, she exhaled slowly, brushing her nose against the hollow beneath his jaw.

“You were the ache I didn’t know how to stop nursing,” she said. “And the quiet I didn’t know I missed until everything else got loud.”

Then she tucked her face against the curve of his neck and held him like she was the shoreline and he was the tide that had finally come back.

Because he had.

And this time, she believed he’d stay.

Tyler didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Just wrapped his arms tighter around her, letting the rhythm of her voice settle into the hollow places he hadn’t realized were still empty.

The way she curled into him—bare skin, sleepy voice, memories folded between them like the sheets—made him feel like every bad version of himself had finally been outgrown. Not erased. Not forgotten. But rewritten.

She was here. Still here.

Not because he deserved it.

But because she wanted to be.

He tilted his head, brushing a kiss to her temple, slow and lingering. The kind that said I hear you, even when his throat couldn’t quite make words yet. His fingers skimmed her back beneath the blanket, drawing gentle patterns that didn’t mean anything except I’m here, I’m here, I’m here.

He didn’t rush to fill the quiet.

Because for once, he didn’t need to.

Ellie’s breath was warm against his collarbone. Her legs were tangled with his like she belonged there, and maybe she always had. His free hand came up to thread gently through her hair, letting the strands slip over his knuckles like water. He remembered braiding it for her once in the backseat of his car, clumsy and too proud to ask for help. She’d laughed so hard she nearly cried.

Now she was silent.

But not distant.

Just close in that way that meant something deeper. Something steady. Something earned.

“I thought about coming back a thousand times,” he murmured finally, voice thick. “But I knew… if I did it wrong, I wouldn’t get another shot.”

His thumb brushed her cheekbone as she tipped her head up, eyes finding his.

“I didn’t want to crawl,” he added. “I wanted to walk. Stand. Be the kind of man who didn’t have to be forgiven to be kept.”

He watched the way her expression shifted—softened. How her lips curved not in pity but in something far more dangerous: belief.

And it wrecked him.

“I remember the shirt,” he said after a beat, smiling a little. “It was too big on you and you wore it like armor.” He paused, pulling her impossibly closer. “I’ve never wanted to be anything more than something that made you feel safe.”

His hand tightened gently at her back, grounding her against his chest. He didn’t care if the blanket slipped. Didn’t care if the world outside her apartment kept spinning.

All he cared about was her heartbeat against his.

That she was warm.

That she stayed.

“I love you,” he whispered again, quieter this time. Just for her. “Not for what we used to be. But for this. For the version of us that made it.”

He felt her hand slide up to rest over his heart like she needed to feel it too.

“I’m gonna keep showing up,” he added, lips brushing her hair. “Even when it’s hard. Even when you leave mugs on the floor and I forget the dryer again and the world tries to turn us into something small.”

He smiled into her hair.

“Because I don’t want easy, El. I want you.”

They stayed there like that—entwined, steady, quietly wrecked and quietly remade—beneath the weight of soft sheets and the heavier truth that maybe love wasn’t about never breaking.

Maybe it was about choosing to stay when you finally learned how to hold each other right.

Ellie didn’t say a word.

She just listened—heart wide open, every breath a quiet thread stitching her back together from the inside out.

Because Tyler’s voice didn’t just speak to her. It settled into her. Like rain on parched earth. Like the hum of an old song she hadn’t realized she’d been humming under her breath for years.

He held her like memory. Like meaning. Like something he couldn’t bear to misplace again.

And for the first time in a long, long time—she let him.

Not because she’d forgotten the ache.

But because he remembered it too.

Her fingers, resting lightly over the steady drumbeat of his heart, felt every word he didn’t know how to say. Felt the tremor beneath his skin when he spoke of crawling and standing. Of not needing forgiveness to be chosen.

She knew that ache.

She’d carried it too.

Folded it into every version of herself that learned how to get up alone. How to be fine without him. But fine never felt like home. Not really. Not when he had once made her laugh like a promise.

When he mentioned the shirt, she almost laughed again—except her throat closed around it. That stupid, soft old shirt that had smelled like his cologne and smoke and late-night apologies. She used to sleep in it like it could hold her when he couldn’t.

And now he was here.

Not perfect.

Not polished.

But real.

Ellie’s breath hitched when he said, I love you. Not because it surprised her—but because it didn’t. Not this time. Not when everything about his touch, his voice, his being there whispered the same thing in quieter ways.

Her lips curved faintly as he mumbled about mugs and dryers, about showing up when it’s hard. That was always the part she needed most—not the grand gesture, but the small, imperfect decision to stay. To keep choosing her. Even when the world made it easier not to.

She pressed her face into the crook of his neck, letting his warmth bleed into her like morning sunlight through her favorite window. Let herself breathe it in—him in.

And then, voice low and a little rough, she whispered it like a secret wrapped in certainty:

“Then stay, Ty. Stay when it’s boring. Stay when I shut down. Stay when I don’t know how to say what I need.”

She pulled back just enough to look at him—barely inches, but enough to see the boy she loved, the man he was becoming.

“I don’t want perfect either,” she said. “I just want real. This. You.”

And that was it.

No grand declarations. No ribboned ending.

Just two people, half-wrecked and whole again, holding each other in the kind of silence that only comes when you’ve finally been heard.

Ellie tucked her hand back over his heart and let the quiet hold them.

Because for the first time in forever—it wasn’t empty.

She didn’t need him to answer.

Not right away.

Because she could feel it in the way his hand settled at her waist again, warm and steady. In the way his forehead dropped gently to hers, breath brushing her lips like punctuation.

He was here. Still here.

And that meant more than any promise ever had.

Ellie’s eyes fluttered closed for a moment—not out of exhaustion, but from the overwhelming stillness of it all. Her bones, once braced for heartbreak, were starting to uncoil. Her mind, always racing, was finally quiet. Like her body had been waiting for this kind of safety. This kind of slowness.

This kind of him.

“I like the way your heart sounds,” she murmured, lips brushing his skin more than speaking. “Like it remembers mine.”

It was barely a sentence. Just a breath, really. But she felt him exhale when she said it—felt his arms tighten just a little more, like he knew what it meant. Like he understood her even when she didn’t fully understand herself.

The comfort of it washed over her, slow and warm, like a tide pulling her under—but gently. Not drowning. Just rocking her toward something softer.

Ellie’s fingers curled slightly against his chest, her touch loosening as the weight of everything finally slipped off her shoulders. She felt his thumb trace along her spine once, twice… and then she stopped counting. Because the rhythm of it had become her lullaby.

A hum in the dark.

A reminder that love didn’t have to be loud to be lasting.

She shifted once, a tiny sigh escaping her lips, and then she melted into him completely—her breath falling into sync with his, her body slack with trust, her thoughts drifting like pages on a breeze.

And when sleep came for her, slow and quiet and full of him, she didn’t fight it.

Because this time, the ending wasn’t an exit.

It was an arrival.
