Heather didn’t flinch.

For a long time, she had been the girl who broke in private. Who let the fear in only when no one was looking, who wore her control like armor and her obsession like perfume. But not now. Not anymore.

She held Alice Mae’s gaze like it was the only light left in the room.

There was a flicker of something sharp in her chest when Alice spoke—something that twisted and sparked and nearly made her look away. But she didn’t. Heather Goodwin never looked away. Not from the blood. Not from the truth. And definitely not from the girl who just said I love you too much like it was a war cry.

Something inside Heather straightened.

It wasn’t peace. It wasn’t clarity. It was fire.

She exhaled slowly, then leaned back just enough to level her spine, her chin. Queenly. Defiant. Like someone ready to command a room—or a battlefield.

“I’m done letting this thing write our ending,” she said, voice low but diamond-hard. “It doesn’t get to chew us up and spit us out. Not anymore.”

Her hand slid free from Alice’s only to cup her cheek, thumb brushing over the skin beneath her eye—not soft, but reverent. Like grounding herself. Like claiming something.

“I used to think I dragged us into this,” she admitted. “That my obsession made us targets. That the blog posts and the cold case files and the way I couldn’t stop looking at murder like it was a mirror—somehow that invited the curse.”

Her throat tightened, but she didn’t falter.

“But this goes deeper. It chose us. Me. You. And I don’t know why. Yet.”

She stood, slow and deliberate, like a queen rising from her throne to go to war. The flicker in her eyes had returned now—something untouchable. Beautiful. Terrifying.

“I’m not scared of being marked anymore,” she said. “I’m not scared of being wrong. The only thing that scares me is letting this thing win.”

Her gaze burned into Alice then—fierce, loyal, unflinching.

“We are not victims. We are not broken. We are the storm they should’ve seen coming.”

And then, almost tender, but still with teeth:

“If we burn—then let the whole damn forest catch fire with us.”

Alice Mae didn’t answer right away.

She looked at Heather—really looked. Not just at the fire in her eyes or the way she stood like something ancient had finally woken in her spine. She looked past that. Saw the girl who used to count the freckles on her shoulders in the sun. The girl who once cried in her driveway after reading a news clipping too late at night. The girl who kept chasing ghosts like they owed her something.

She stepped closer, close enough that their shadows bled into each other.

“Then let’s stop waiting for it to strike.”

Her voice was quiet, but laced with steel.

“I’m done playing defense. Done hoping it leaves us alone if we just stay small enough. Careful enough. Good enough.” She shook her head, jaw tight. “It already took things. Pieces of us. It already decided we were part of the story. So screw surviving it. Let’s rewrite it.”

Her eyes flicked to the wall of notes, threads, and inked names. It used to scare her—the scope of it, the chaos—but now it looked like a map. Not a warning. A path.

“I’m not interested in being a footnote in someone else’s curse. We fight. We dig. We burn their records and break their rules and we make them remember our names.”

She turned back to Heather, eyes lit with something equal parts fury and devotion.

“But I’m only doing this with you. No secrets. No half-truths. If you’re in, I’m in. Every nightmare, every step into the dark. You don’t carry this without me.”

Alice Mae reached for her hand again, but this time it wasn’t comfort.

It was a pact.

“We don’t just survive this,” she said. “We end it.”

Heather didn’t hesitate.

She met Alice Mae’s hand halfway, fingers lacing like a seal pressed into wax. Something final. Something sacred. She let the weight of the vow settle into her bones, heavy and hot—but it didn’t crush her. It steadied her.

For the first time in weeks, maybe longer, she could breathe.

She looked at Alice—really looked. Not just at the grit in her voice or the spark in her eyes, but at the way she stood like she’d already lived through the worst and chosen to keep going anyway. They were scorched earth and sleepless nights, scraped hearts and unspoken grief—but they were here. Still standing. Still fighting.

Heather felt the tremor of a truth she’d been holding too long rise like a tide inside her. It had festered, grown sharp in the quiet. But now—now it needed out. Because Alice Mae was right. No more secrets. No more half-truths.

“I need to tell you something,” Heather said, voice lower now, threaded with something raw. “And I should’ve told you the second I found out.”

She let go of her hand only long enough to grab the faded manila envelope from her desk. She didn’t open it. Just stared down at it, thumb grazing the crease like it might bite.

“It’s about my name,” she said, and the words tasted strange. Like betrayal and legacy all at once. “It’s not really Goodwin.”

A beat. A breath.

“It used to be Goode.”

The name hung in the air like a gunshot—old blood echoing in new walls.

Heather finally looked up, eyes burning.

“My dad changed it in '95. After Nick. After the massacre. He didn’t want the association. Said he was ‘protecting us.’ But all it really did was bury the truth. Bury me.”

She tossed the envelope on the table like it was something venomous. Inside were birth certificates, old yearbook pages, a family tree scribbled in the margins of her dad’s police notes. Proof.

“I didn’t want to believe it,” she whispered. “Didn’t want to think I was part of the same family that lit the match. But I am. Nick was his cousin. Which means I’ve got the Goode blood, too. Whatever this curse is… I think it knows that. I think it’s why it’s never let me go.”

The air felt thicker now, like the room itself was holding its breath. But Heather didn’t falter.

“I used to think I got obsessed with all of this because of the murders. Because I liked the mystery. But that was just the surface. Something deeper’s been pulling me in. And I think—I think I was meant to find it.”

She met Alice’s gaze again, steadier this time. Fierce. Honest.

“So yeah. I’m in. All the way. We don’t just end this thing. We rip it up by the roots. No matter who it came from. No matter who I have to become.”

A bitter smile touched her lips—half battle cry, half ghost.

“Let the curse remember my name.”

Then, softer. Almost reverent.

“But this time, it’ll be our names it chokes on.”

Alice Mae didn’t flinch.

The name hit like a cold wind through an open window, but she didn’t step back. Didn’t let go. Her fingers tightened around Heather’s like a lifeline—like anchoring them both to the moment before it slipped into something irreversible.

She stared down at the envelope, then at Heather. The girl who had walked beside her through tunnels and blood-slick dreams. The girl who now stood at the edge of legacy and ruin and still chose to speak the truth aloud.

“Goode,” Alice said, letting the word sit on her tongue for a beat. “That’s why it followed you.”

Her voice didn’t crack. It didn’t rise. It simply understood.

“That’s why it started with you.”

She exhaled slowly, a thousand puzzle pieces falling into place behind her eyes.

“You were never just chasing the curse, Heather. You were answering it.”

Alice moved then—around the desk, toward the envelope like it might try to flee. She didn’t open it. She didn’t need to. The truth was already pulsing in the air like static.

“You didn’t bury this,” she said. “Your family did. And yeah, maybe that blood in your veins woke something up. But it’s not who you are. It’s not all you are.”

She looked up, eyes fierce.

“I’ve seen who you are. I’ve seen you fight for people who didn’t deserve it. Seen you stay up all night trying to make sense of impossible things. I’ve seen you fall apart in silence because you didn’t want anyone else to carry the weight.”

She reached up, brushing a piece of Heather’s hair back behind her ear. Not soft. Not delicate. Intentional.

“You’re not a Goode,” Alice Mae said. “You’re Heather. The girl who found the fire and didn’t run.”

She stepped back just enough to meet her gaze without blinking.

“So yeah. It chose you. But now you choose what comes next.”

She nodded toward the envelope. “We use it. Not to hide. Not to excuse. To end it.”

Then, quieter—just for them:

“It won’t just remember our names, Heather.”

A pause. A promise.

“It’ll fear them.”

Heather swallowed, hard.

For a second—just a second—she let herself feel the burn of those words. Let herself stand tall in the aftermath of them. Alice’s belief in her felt like armor, forged in every choice she hadn’t run from. The fire in her chest swelled with the thrill of that faith, the echo of something powerful and brave.

But then it cracked.

Just slightly.

Confidence, for Heather, had always been a kind of performance. A show-stopping number with no intermission. And tonight, it flickered. Because the truth didn’t just sit in envelopes or crawl from shadows. It lived in blood. In her blood.

A question rose like smoke in her throat—one she hadn’t spoken aloud since the day she found out who she really came from. Since the whispers of the Goode name settled into her bones like rot.

What if it didn’t start with her?

Not really, anyway.

What if someone else had picked up where Nick left off?

What if the curse wasn’t just a tether to the past, but a hand pulling the future down with it?

“What if we can’t end it?” she asked, barely above a whisper.

The room didn’t shudder. The lights didn’t flicker. But something shifted inside her—quiet, aching. That familiar guilt curled like smoke beneath her ribs, wrapping around her heart with cold fingers.

What if all this time she’d just been chasing ghosts while someone else—someone with the same blood, the same dark legacy—was feeding them?

What if she wasn’t the end?

What if she was just another chapter?

She looked down at the envelope, breath catching. The seal stared back like an eye, unblinking. Waiting.

Heather forced herself to meet Alice’s gaze again, the bravado stripped raw. There was no mask now, no quip, no glittering distraction. Just the girl behind the fire—afraid that the match she struck might burn the whole world down.

But even through the fear, something steadied.

Alice Mae believed in her.

And maybe—just maybe—that was enough to keep going.
