He didn’t speak at first.

Couldn’t.

Because there were moments that didn’t ask for answers—they just asked to be felt. And this… this was one of them. Her voice in his mouth. Her trust on his tongue. The taste of lemon and fig and forever melting into him like heat.

She said it wasn’t a tease.

And he knew.

It was a vow.

He chewed slow, savoring every inch of the tart—not for the sugar, not for the indulgence—but because she had given it. Offered it like a confession. Like a final puzzle piece he hadn’t realized he was waiting for until now.

And God, wasn’t she stunning like this?

Not undone.

Whole.

Bare skin pressed against denim, robe slipping off her shoulder like even the fabric knew she was safe now. Her fingers at his neck, warm and grounding. Her lips still honey-slick from their kiss.

He turned his head into her palm, kissed it once. Then twice. Then just… stayed there.

Pressed into her like home.

“You say it like it’s a gift,” he said finally, voice rough with reverence, “but baby—you are.”

His hands moved—one to her thigh, one to her hip, pulling her in until she was all but folded into his lap, the box of pastries long forgotten beside them.

His mouth ghosted her jaw. Her ear. Her shoulder. Each kiss a punctuation.

“I don’t want the stage,” he murmured between kisses. “Don’t need the spotlight.”

His fingers threaded through the loose tie of her robe, pulling it tighter—not to hide her. Just to keep her close.

“I just want this.”
A kiss to her throat.
“Want you like this.”
A kiss to her sternum.
“Want to build a life that ends in tart crumbs and your laugh in my mouth.”

And when he pulled back—just enough to see her again, eyes soft and sure—he smiled that smile he only ever gave her.

The one that meant I would never leave, even if the world burned down around us.

“You’ve already given me everything,” he whispered.
“Now I just want to spend the rest of my life proving you never have to take it back.”

And he kissed her again.

Not as a promise.

As proof.

Her breath caught.

Not the shaky kind—not fear, not doubt.

This was quieter. Deeper. The kind of breath you didn’t realize you’d been holding until someone handed you safety and said, here, you can set it down now.

And that’s what he was, wasn’t he?

Safety. Steady hands in a world that had only ever asked her to pose and perform. She’d spent her whole life being looked at—painted in light, carved into myth. But Nico?

He saw her.

Saw the girl who used to cry into pillows so no one would hear. The woman who didn’t believe in forever because forever had always felt like a lie wrapped in glitter. He saw every storm she’d survived, every scar she’d hidden, and still kissed her like she was holy.

She touched his face now—both hands, framing him like a portrait she didn’t need to hang, because he already lived in her heart.

“I didn’t believe in this,” she whispered. “Not until you.”

Her voice didn’t waver. Not anymore.

“I thought love like this was something people made up to sell songs or movie endings. I thought if I wanted to be kept, I had to be smaller. Softer. Easier to swallow.”

Her fingers brushed the line of his jaw, memorizing him all over again.

“But you… you never asked me to shrink. You never asked me to be anything other than exactly this.”

She leaned in, nose brushing his.

“Messy. Loud. Quiet. Glorious. Tired.”

Her eyes shimmered—open, steady, so full of love it made the air itself feel like velvet.

“You taught me that love isn’t about being chosen once. It’s about being chosen every day. Especially on the ones I don’t feel worthy of it.”

Her mouth found his again—soft, slow, not because it needed to lead anywhere, but because this was the somewhere.

And when she pulled back, cheeks flushed and voice like the sweetest ache, she whispered:

“I believe now.”

Then, with a smile that carried all her siren strength and all her newfound softness:

“And I’m yours. Every bite. Every breath. Every day.”

Forever never looked so certain.

Nico didn’t speak.

Not because he didn’t have words—but because none of them felt big enough.

How could they?

How could any language carry what it felt like to be seen like this? To be held in her gaze like a sacred thing? To hear her speak the truths she used to bury beneath armor and glamour, and know—know—she meant them?

His hands, calloused from years of strings and stages, moved to cover hers where they framed his face. He held them there—anchored himself there. Like if he let go, the whole world might tip off its axis.

And maybe it would.

Because she was his gravity now.

“I’ve never wanted anything the way I want this,” he said, voice low, wrecked, reverent. “You. Us. The truth of you.”

His thumbs brushed the insides of her wrists, feeling her pulse—fast, alive, steady—and something in his chest cracked wider, softer.

“I’ve seen the whole world,” he whispered, forehead tipping to hers, breath caught somewhere between prayer and promise, “and nothing’s ever held a candle to the way you look at me when you stop pretending you have to be invincible.”

His lips found her cheek, then her temple, then the corner of her mouth. Not rushed. Not claiming.

Just… present.

“And I will choose you,” he said, fierce now. “Every fucking day. Loud, tired, laughing, unraveling. With or without makeup. In your oldest t-shirt or that black dress that makes the world forget how to breathe.”

His hands moved—one sliding around her waist, the other up to cradle the back of her neck.

“And when you forget,” he added, voice like heat pressed to skin, “I’ll remind you. Every single time.”

He kissed her again.

This time deeper.

This time like he meant forever.

And when he finally pulled back, their foreheads still touching, his smile—crooked, soft, wrecked—was everything.

“You’re mine,” he breathed. “Every bite. Every breath. Every day.”

And she could feel it—

Not just in his words.

But in the way he looked at her.

Like belief wasn’t a leap anymore.

It was home.

Her eyes didn’t leave his—not for a second.

Because this? This was the part she never believed in. The part every song lied about. The part she’d trained herself to live without.

And yet here he was.

Here they were.

She held his gaze like it was glass and something precious beneath it. Let his words soak into her skin until they settled in the places that used to echo. Let herself feel it—this kind of devotion. This kind of peace.

And when he kissed her again—slow, sure, that kind of kiss that didn’t demand anything but gave everything—she melted into it.

Melted into him.

Not because she was giving up.

Because she was finally letting go.

Of the weight. The walls. The part of her that kept waiting for the world to prove him wrong.

When they pulled apart, barely a breath between them, her smile bloomed slow.

Not practiced.

Not for anyone else.

Just for him.

“You always say the exact thing I didn’t know I needed to hear,” she whispered, brushing her fingers through the back of his hair. “It’s like you know all the places I thought were too dark to love and you light a candle in every one.”

Her thumb traced his cheekbone—tender, reverent.

“And I will never stop choosing you, either. Not once. Not even on the hard days.”

She leaned in, kissed him one last time—soft, warm, everything.

Then sighed against his mouth, sleep finally catching up with the quiet.

“But if I stay here much longer,” she murmured, voice dipping into a lazy kind of sweetness, “you’re going to have to carry me.”

A pause. A sleepy smile.

“Because I’m officially full of pastry, peace, and the love of my actual life.”

She leaned her forehead to his, still grinning.

“Come on,” she whispered. “Let’s go to bed. I want you to hold me until I forget what the world ever felt like without you in it.”

And just like that, Lilith stood.

Still soft.

Still glowing.

Still his.

Nico held her like she was made of something rare.

Not delicate—but precious. Precious in the way fire is when you’ve been cold for too long. The way silence is when the world won’t shut up. The way a person becomes your home without ever asking to be.

She fit against him like a secret he’d sworn to keep. Like her weight in his arms was familiar. Earned. Holy.

Her robe shifted as he lifted her, sliding further down one shoulder until the pale curve of her collarbone caught the light. Her head dropped gently to his shoulder, face turned into the crook of his neck, lips brushing his pulse. The warmth of her breath made him shiver, but he didn’t stop walking.

The house was dark except for the soft trail of light behind them—lamps still glowing in the living room, casting amber across the floor like honey spilled from a dream. The city glittered far below the windows, but Nico only saw her. The curve of her cheek. The lashes dusted against flushed skin. The way her fingers toyed lazily with the collar of his shirt like she wasn’t even aware she was doing it.

She murmured something half-asleep, something like you smell like sugar and forever, and God, it nearly knocked him over.

He carried her down the hallway like a man holding a spell—slow, steady, reverent. Past the photos, past the open doors and quiet rooms, straight into the bedroom that felt more like them than anything else in the world.

The bed waited—cool sheets, down pillows, the kind of comfort money couldn’t buy because it was layered in shared sleep and the scent of skin and lavender.

He didn’t drop her.

He laid her down.

Carefully.

One hand under her thighs, the other at the small of her back until she was settled, limbs loose and warm and lit up with love. Her eyes fluttered open just long enough to catch his as he straightened.

And she smiled.

Soft. Sleepy. Disarmed.

“Take this off,” she whispered, tugging at the edge of his shirt.

So he did.

Pulled it over his head and tossed it aside, and when he climbed in beside her, she was already curling toward him. Already pressing her body to his like a memory she wanted to relive.

She sighed—deep and content and boneless—and tucked her head beneath his chin. Her fingers spread across his chest, finding his heartbeat like it was music.

“Better than a song,” she murmured.

He kissed her hair.

Pulled the blankets up over them both.

Wrapped his arms around her like the rest of the world could wait.

And maybe it could.

Because in that room, in that moment, there was nothing else.

Just her breath against his throat. Her body molded to his. Her trust tucked between every heartbeat.

He whispered her name once—Emilia—just to feel the way it shaped his mouth.

She didn’t answer.

But her fingers squeezed his side.

And that was enough.

Because she was still here.

Still soft.

Still his.

And sleep came like grace.

The storm had already started by the time she got home.

Not outside—L.A. was gold-washed and dry, sky smeared in late-afternoon haze—but in her. Beneath the skin. Behind the sunglasses. In the space where calm should’ve lived.

Lilith’s heels clicked sharp against the marble, too loud for the quiet she’d been craving. Her dress—black silk, bias-cut, low in the back—clung to her like heat. Like pressure. She hadn’t changed out of it since the meeting, the one that went sideways before it even started. Hair still pinned up from earlier, makeup just smudged enough to give her away.

She’d worn the dress on purpose. Sleek. Polished. Strong.

A uniform of control in a world that kept trying to strip it from her.

But the second she stepped inside, the weight started to shift. Her keys clattered too hard into the bowl by the door. The cool air hit her skin and made her shiver, and something in her chest twisted tight.

She needed to breathe.

Needed to be.

But then Nico said something—something small, something harmless, something about her calendar being too full and maybe slowing down for once—and it hit her wrong. Hit her hard.

Because her last relationship had said the same thing.

Only then it hadn’t sounded like care. It had sounded like control. Like jealousy. Like don’t shine so bright, baby, you’re making me feel small.

And Nico didn’t mean it that way.

But her body didn’t know the difference.

She stopped walking.

Turned.

The quiet before the snap was the loudest part.

Her voice didn’t shake, but it was sharp—cut glass under velvet. “You think I want to be this busy? That I like running on empty?”

She saw the way he froze. The way his jaw twitched before he could soften it.

But she wasn’t done.

“You don’t get to tell me to slow down, Nico. Not you. Not anyone. I have fought like hell to get here. I’ve bled for this. You think I don’t want peace? You think I like performing for people who only want to consume me?”

Her breath hitched, throat closing around heat she didn’t want to name.

“Don’t tell me how to live when you’ve only ever seen the version of me that finally felt safe.”

The words echoed back at her like a slap.

Too loud. Too much. Too late.

She didn’t move.

Just stood there—wrapped in silk and fury and the kind of fear that looked a lot like anger. Her chest heaved. Her hands shook. And the worst part?

She already regretted it.

But regret didn’t close the distance between them.

It just made her feel lonelier inside the house they’d turned into a home.

Lilith looked at him—eyes wide, wet, mouth trembling even as she tried to hold it together.

She wasn’t mad at him.

She was mad at every ghost she hadn’t finished burying.

And now he was staring at her like he didn’t know where she’d gone.

And maybe… neither did she.

He didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Not at first.

Because she wasn’t looking at him—not really. She was looking through him, past him, at every man who ever tried to dim her just to feel brighter beside her. And God, he wasn’t that. He knew he wasn’t. But when trauma took the wheel, logic didn’t stand a chance.

The words hit him like shrapnel—not because they were meant to wound, but because they weren’t. Because they were desperate. Because they came from somewhere raw and real and old. A place she didn’t open often, not even with him.

He let the silence stretch.

Let it hold them both.

Because she needed space more than softness right now. Needed to know he wasn’t going to flinch, wasn’t going to snap back, wasn’t going to make this moment about him.

So he stood still.

Watched her.

Watched the armor fall off in pieces she didn’t mean to drop.

And when her voice broke—when the fury dissolved just enough for him to see the trembling underneath—he finally stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like approaching a wounded animal who didn’t want to bite, but might anyway.

“I wasn’t telling you how to live,” he said, voice low and steady, like he was afraid too much softness might undo her completely. “I was trying to remind you that you don’t have to survive every day like it’s a war.”

A pause.

Then, gentler:

“Not with me.”

He didn’t reach for her.

Not yet.

But he kept his voice warm. Honest. Grounding.

“I know I’m not them. And I know your body doesn’t always believe that.” His jaw flexed, like he hated even having to say it. “But I don’t want less of you, Emilia. Not ever. I don’t want you small or quiet or easier. I want you here—in all your fire, in all your fight, even when it’s pointed at me.”

His eyes stayed locked to hers, unflinching.

“And I’m not going anywhere.”

He let that settle.

Let her feel it.

And when he finally took a step closer—hands still down, voice still soft—he tilted his head.

“You don’t have to apologize,” he added. “But you can fall apart. I’ll hold it. I’ll hold you. As long as it takes.”

Still, he didn’t reach.

He just opened his arms.

And waited.

Because love wasn’t just worship in the light.

It was staying—choosing—when the dark came clawing, and the storm inside the girl you loved started calling her by every name you promised she’d never have to hear again.

Lilith didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

Her chest rose, then fell, sharp and stilted—like every breath was barbed wire trying to be thread. The fury that had sparked so fast was already dimming, but it left smoke in its wake. Shame. Old ash. The kind that didn’t wash off easily.

She hated that she’d gone there.

Hated more that she’d brought him with her.

But she couldn’t unring the bell. Couldn’t unsay the words that had come out like blood instead of truth.

Her eyes flicked up.

And he was still there.

Still steady. Still open.

God.

She blinked once—twice.

Then the tears came.

Quiet. Defenseless. One blink too late.

She didn’t make a sound. Didn’t crumple. Just let them fall—each one carving a trail down skin that had been held up too long. Skin that remembered being judged and shaped and repackaged. Skin that had learned to flinch at softness because it had always turned sharp.

But not him.

Never him.

He wasn’t trying to fix her. Wasn’t trying to fix anything. He was just… there.

And that broke her more than any cruelty ever had.

Her hands dropped to her sides, the silk of her dress rustling faintly like a sigh. She stood still for a second longer, then took one step forward.

Then another.

And then she was in his arms.

No dramatics. No sobs. Just the full weight of her pressed to the chest that had promised not to run. Her hands curled into the fabric at his back. Her face tucked beneath his jaw, where his warmth met her cheek like home.

She didn’t speak right away.

But when she did, her voice cracked wide open.

“I know you’re not them.”

A pause.

“I just… sometimes I forget I’m not her anymore.”

Her fingers clenched tighter in his shirt.

“I don’t want to be the girl who lashes out before she’s even looked around. I don’t want to be someone who hurts you when all you’ve ever done is love me right.”

She pulled back enough to look at him, lashes wet, mouth trembling at the corners.

“I’m scared sometimes,” she whispered. “That I won’t ever learn how to live without the armor.”

Her throat moved on a swallow.

“That one day you’ll get tired of having to remind me I’m safe.”

A beat.

“I don’t want to make you hold me together just because someone else made a mess.”

But even as she said it—God, even as she meant it—her heart leaned into his anyway. Like it knew.

Like it had always known.

And this time, when she exhaled, it was softer.

Not surrender.

Trust.

Her hand came up to his cheek, thumb brushing the corner of his mouth.

“You’re not my storm, Nico,” she said quietly. “You’re my shelter.”

And then she rested her forehead to his, letting her eyes close.

Because she didn’t have to fight anymore.

Not here.

Not with him.

He held her like he’d been built for it.

Like every bone in his body had learned its shape from the way she curled against him. No pressure. No force. Just arms around her, steady and open, letting her take what she needed and nothing more.

And God, she needed.

He felt it in the tremble of her shoulders. In the silent shudder of breath against his throat. In the way her fingers gripped his shirt like maybe she didn’t believe this version of him could stay.

But he did.

He stayed.

He didn’t say shh. Didn’t kiss her tears away or tell her to stop crying. He just let her be. Let her cry, let her fall, let her feel. Every quiet collapse. Every word that left her mouth like a wound trying to heal itself mid-sentence.

When she said I forget I’m not her anymore, his eyes burned. Because he knew that girl. Had met her in glimpses—in the way she flinched at softness, in the way she braced before every compliment, in the way she carried strength like it was armor and punishment at the same time.

And when she whispered You’re not my storm. You’re my shelter—

Fuck.

He wanted to weep for her. For the ten versions of her that had survived just to get to this one. For every time someone had made her think she had to apologize for her fire instead of letting it keep them warm.

So he did the only thing he knew how.

He kissed her.

Not hard. Not soft. Just right. Just real.

And when he pulled back, he framed her face with both hands and pressed his forehead to hers.

“I’m never gonna ask you not to be fire,” he murmured, breath brushing her lips. “I just wanna be the place you can burn and still be loved.”

His thumbs brushed her cheeks.

“I don’t need easy, Emilia. I need you.”

A pause.

“However you come.”

Then quieter:

“I don’t get tired of reminding you you’re safe. Because every time I do, I watch you believe it a little more.”

He kissed her again.

And again.

Like she was both the storm and the clearing sky.

Then he wrapped his arms around her tight—like he meant it. Like she could fall to pieces a thousand times and still land here. Still be loved. Still be held.

Because she was.

Because she would be.

Because she was his, and this—

This was theirs.

She shattered.

Quietly. Completely.

Not in rage. Not in panic. In relief.

Because there was something excruciating about being loved this gently after surviving so much sharpness. Something gutting about being held like she wasn’t a burden—but a home. Something she didn’t know how to name without crying harder.

And so she did.

Right there in his arms, silk dress crushed against his chest, makeup smeared against his skin, throat torn open by nothing but the sound of safety. Her fingers gripped tighter at his back, and she pressed in closer, like the contact could erase the ghost hands still living in her memory.

“I hate this,” she breathed, voice wrecked, raw. “I hate that they still get to live here—in my head, in my nerves—when I’m with you.”

Her hands moved to his chest, fingers splayed like she was trying to feel something steady beneath the quake of her own body.

“You’ve been nothing but good to me. Nothing but good, Nico. And I still reacted like you were someone else.”

She shook her head, tears sliding fresh.

“I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to drag the worst parts of my past into the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

She pulled back enough to see him again—barely.

Her eyes were swollen, her lips parted like an apology lived there. But she didn’t say she was sorry.

She just looked.

Looked like she was begging him to see her clearly and love her anyway.

And he did.

God, he did.

She pressed her forehead to his again and let her breath slow. Let the storm inside her settle—not gone, not forgotten, but soothed by something real.

By him.

“Can we…” she started, voice frayed at the edges but softer now. “Can we go lie down?”

A pause.

Then the faintest ghost of a smile.

“Not to sleep. Not yet. I just want to be next to you. Maybe play something stupid on the TV. Let me wear one of your shirts. Steal a blanket. Pretend we never had to learn how to be this strong.”

She pulled back fully then—face flushed and damp, but eyes steadier.

“Let me be soft with you again.”

She swallowed. “I need that.”

And maybe it wasn’t some grand romantic gesture.

But it was healing.

It was hope.

It was her reaching for joy after the storm.

And Nico?

She knew he’d reach right back.
