Kai felt the shift the second she said I actually need to tell you something.
Not a bad shift — just the kind where the air in the booth tightened around the edges, where he instinctively sat up a little straighter, bracing not out of fear, but out of wanting to be the place she could land. He didn’t interrupt. Didn’t rush. Just listened. And the second she said the label called? Yep. There it was. That little pinch of tension beneath her voice — the one only people who lived in their industry ever recognized. Wren, meanwhile, was already prepping her battle stance. “Did they steal your songs?” Kai almost snorted into his coffee. But then Lennon nudged his foot under the table — deliberate, grounding — and he caught everything she wasn’t fully saying out loud. Weeks, not months. Meetings again. Shoots. Schedules. The kind of noise she’d finally started to breathe outside of. And she was trying so hard to deliver it lightly — breakfast-important — even though he could hear the tremor beneath the calm. He didn’t touch her hand again (Wren had radar for romance), but he let his knee stay pressed to hers under the table, steady and constant. Then she said, So? What do you think? EP drop sooner than expected… chaos waffles… me trying not to spiral before noon. He set his coffee down, leaned forward, and let out a soft laugh — warm, low, meant only for her. “Well,” he said, tapping the edge of her menu like he was outlining a very serious briefing, “first of all: congratulations. Early release means they know they’ve got something good. Like… stupid good. ‘Play it on repeat and forget to sleep’ good.” Her cheeks warmed just the way he’d hoped they would. “Second,” he continued, voice dropping into that teasing-but-honest register he saved only for her, “I can absolutely distract you with carbs and charm. That’s basically my strongest skill set.” Wren nodded rapidly, supporting this claim. Kai leaned in a fraction more, lowering his voice just enough that it slipped beneath the noise of the café. “And third…” He let his foot bump hers back under the table — gentle, certain, intentional. “You don’t have to brace around me. If things get loud again… we’ll figure it out. We’ve done chaos with glitter and frog hats — we can handle email chaos too.” Lennon blinked — slow, soft — like the steadiness in his voice hit deeper than she expected. “And hey,” Kai added, smile tugging crooked, warm, fond in a way he didn’t bother hiding, “if your schedule gets crazy, Wren and I will just plan more… uh…” He gestured vaguely at the giant menu. “…family club meetings.” Wren gasped. “WITH WAFFLES.” “Obviously with waffles,” Kai said, smoothing her hair with one hand. “Can’t have Sparkle Warrior business without carbs.” He glanced back at Lennon then — eyes warm, steady, something unspoken sitting there between affection and something bigger he wasn’t going to throw at her in a breakfast booth. “But we’re here today,” he said softly. “You. Me. Our queen.” Wren saluted with her crayon. “So let’s enjoy it,” Kai finished gently. “We’ll deal with the rest one piece at a time. EP drop included.” He reached for his coffee again, brushing his knee against hers once more — subtle, grounding. “And Lennon?” His smile pulled warmer, deeper. “You’re gonna crush it.” He didn’t say I’m proud of you, or I love the idea of building a future that has room for all three of us, or I could get used to mornings like this for the rest of my life. He didn’t have to. It was in his voice. In the way he looked at her. In the quiet way he stayed. |

Lennon felt her breath catch — not in a heavy, emotional way this time, but in that quiet, warm place just behind her ribs. The kind that bloomed when someone really listened. When someone looked at you and didn’t flinch at the pieces you were still figuring out.
Kai’s words — You don’t have to brace around me — slid under her skin and settled there, steady and gentle like a hand at her back. She didn’t say anything for a second. She just let her knee stay pressed to his, let the warmth of it climb up her leg, let herself look at him the way she only used to let herself look at him when he wasn’t watching. Except he was watching now. Openly. Softly. Like he wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore. Lennon finally exhaled, slow and quiet. “Well,” she said, voice dipping into a smile she couldn’t hold back, “thank God, because my charm levels are nowhere near yours before coffee.” Wren gasped. “LENNY, YOU HAVE SO MUCH CHARM.” Kai choked on a laugh. Lennon squeezed Wren’s shoulder. “See? The Sparkle Warrior believes in me.” Wren puffed her chest out proudly. Then Lennon looked back at Kai — and the playfulness dimmed into something gentler, more honest. “Thank you,” she murmured, her foot brushing his again under the table. “Really. I needed to hear that more than I wanted to admit.” Kai didn’t move, didn’t look away — didn’t try to fill the space. He just stayed steady, exactly the way she needed him to. “So…” Lennon continued, flipping her menu closed with a little thump, “you think I’m gonna crush it?” His eyes softened — God, he didn’t even have to answer. Lennon’s smile grew slow and warm. “Good. Because I kinda want to. And maybe…” She tapped her straw against her glass, pretending to focus on Wren scribbling beside her. “Maybe I don’t want to do the whole crazy release thing alone this time.” Kai’s knee brushed hers — not hard, just enough to say I’m right here. Wren suddenly held up her drawing again — now with the strawberry fortification included. “ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE EP? CAN I BE ON THE COVER?” Lennon laughed, leaning down to kiss the crown of her head. “You’re already the CEO of the whole project.” Wren squealed like this was the greatest honor of her life. Lennon slid her fingers along the side of her glass, eyes drifting back to Kai — her voice dropping just for him. “And…” she added lightly, eyes soft, “I wouldn’t mind… you being there. For some parts of it. If you want.” Her foot nudged his again, soft and deliberate. “I mean—you did already prove you’re head of carbs and charm.” The corner of her mouth pulled up. “And apparently the unofficial president of our family club.” Wren saluted with both hands. “PRESIDENT DADDY.” Lennon snorted, nearly choking on her water. She looked at Kai again — really looked — and let the moment hover just long enough for him to feel exactly how serious she meant it beneath the teasing. “I’d… like you there,” she said quietly. “Through the chaos.” Her smile warmed, small but steady. “If you want to be.” |

Kai didn’t even pretend to play it cool.
Not when she said If you want to be. Not when her foot brushed his again. Not when she looked at him like that — soft around the eyes, trying to act casual but absolutely not hiding a single thing anymore. It hit him low in the chest, that warmth. Familiar. Immediate. The kind he’d stopped fighting a long time ago. He wasn’t surprised by it anymore. He just… let it settle. Let it feel like the most natural thing in the world. He shifted a little in the booth, leaning his forearms onto the table — close enough that she could feel the heat of him, the quiet certainty coming off him in waves. “Lenny,” he said, voice low but warm, “you don’t even have to ask.” His knee stayed pressed to hers. Steady. Intentional. “I’ve got obligations, yeah,” he added, brushing his thumb along the spine of his menu like he needed something to ground the softness in his voice. “I’ve got work, and meetings, and flights I’ll probably forget to pack for. But I’m gonna be there.” He didn’t say I’m choosing this. He didn’t have to — it was baked right into the tone. “For as much as I can,” he said simply. “Every chance I get. That’s… kind of a given.” Wren gasped loudly, leaning across the table. “DADDY IS GOOD AT SHOWING UP.” Kai chuckled, reaching over to ruffle her hair. “Thanks, kiddo. Glad someone’s keeping track.” Then his eyes flicked back to Lennon — softer again, more private. “If you want me there,” he repeated, voice dipping, “I’m there.” He didn’t promise the whole world. Didn’t sell her perfection. Didn’t pretend his calendar wasn’t a disaster most days. But he meant it. Deeply. Easily. “And honestly?” Kai added, leaning back with a crooked grin that still somehow held all that softness, “I kind of like being the carb-and-charm department. I feel like I’m thriving.” Lennon laughed, shaking her head, cheeks warm. Wren immediately chimed in, “YOU CAN DO THE CHAOS PART TOO!” Kai nodded solemnly. “Excellent. I accept my promotion.” He let the humor fade just slightly — enough that he could say the next part the way it deserved to be said. “And hey,” he murmured, just for her, “I want this. All of it. The breakfasts, the chaos, the parts of your life that scare you a little. I’m not going anywhere.” Wren slapped a sticker onto his forearm like she was knighting him. “YOU’RE IN THE FAMILY CLUB TOO.” Kai grinned, flicking a glance at Lennon — eyes warm and full in that way he wasn’t hiding anymore. “I guess that makes it official, huh?” He didn’t say I like the idea of this being all the time. He didn’t say I could picture us adding one more little stick figure someday. He didn’t say I already feel like this is home. He didn’t have to. It was in the ease of his smile. In the soft brush of his knee against hers. In the way he leaned in just slightly closer — like being beside her was starting to feel instinctive, natural, right. Their plates arrived with a clatter of whipped cream and strawberries, Wren cheering like the world was ending. Kai reached for the syrup, nudging Lennon’s foot once more beneath the table — gentle, playful, but threaded with something deeper. “Alright, Sparkle Warrior,” he said, eyes bright as he handed Wren her fork, “lead us into battle.” And beneath the laughter, beneath the chaos, beneath the mountain of whipped cream— he stayed. |

Lennon didn’t even try to hide the way her face softened.
Not when Wren knighted Kai with a sticker like it was a royal decree. Not when Kai looked at her with that quietly certain warmth — the kind that settled in her ribcage instead of racing through it. She squeezed his hand once, thumb brushing over the sticker Wren had half-stuck to his skin, like she was sealing the moment herself. “Looks official to me,” she murmured, teasing but too fond for it to land as a joke. Wren cheered again, already drowning her waffle in whipped cream with the precision of a sugar-fueled architect. “THE FAMILY CLUB IS IN SESSION!” Lennon laughed, leaning into Wren’s shoulder so she could help steady the plate before it toppled. “Careful, baby. We want a battle, not a disaster.” Wren saluted. “BATTLE!” Lennon slid her own plate closer — neat stack of waffles with blueberries — and nudged her knee against Kai’s again, no hesitation, no hiding. “And for the record?” she said softly under the chaos of Wren creating whipped-cream avalanches. “I do want you there. But not… pressure-on-your-calendar there. Just—” she glanced at him, eyes warm, steady, honest, “present, when you can be. The way you are now.” Kai didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. The slight tilt of his mouth, the way he angled toward her, the warm weight of his leg pressed to hers — that was answer enough. Wren suddenly gasped. “LENNY, LOOK!” She held up a fork stacked with strawberries and cream. “THE FORTIFICATION IS COMPLETE!” Lennon grinned, gently guiding Wren’s tiny hand back toward her own plate. “Excellent work, Commander.” Then she reached for her syrup, poured a thin, slow ribbon across her waffle, and let the calm settle — that quiet domestic hum that made the morning feel fuller than it had any right to. She glanced at Kai again, their hands brushing once more. Her smile softened, low and warm. “Okay,” she said, lifting her fork with a mock sternness, “Sparkle Warriors or not, if either of you get syrup on my sweater, I’m reassigning you to dish duty.” Wren gasped dramatically. “DADDY. SHE HAS POWER.” Kai held up his hands like he was surrendering. Lennon shook her head, laughing — the kind that loosened her shoulders, the kind that felt like home. They dug in then, the three of them, plates clattering, Wren narrating every bite like she was documenting a national breakfast achievement. Between the laughter, the sugar, the tiny kicks under the table, Lennon let herself sit back for a moment — really sit back — and look at them. At Wren, sticky and bright and safe. At Kai, warm and steady and looking at her like this wasn’t something they fell into but something he chose. And Lennon felt it — that honest, gentle, unmistakable truth settle somewhere deep: Yeah. She could end a thousand mornings like this. And start all of them, too. She nudged her foot against Kai’s one more time — soft, playful, certain. “Alright, Sparkle Warriors,” she said, raising her fork in a tiny toast, “let’s finish this mission.” And just like that — with syrup, crayons, and the warm, unspoken fullness between them — the scene settled into something whole. Something bright. Something real. Something that felt a whole lot like the beginning of a life she actually wanted. |
