Nate actually did laugh then.

Not loud—just a soft, breathy chuckle that slipped out of him before he could stop it, the kind that came from being caught gently off-balance. His shoulders loosened with it, but there was a flicker of nerves there too, warm and human and completely unguarded.

“Yeah,” he said quietly, a little self-aware now, eyes dipping for half a second before lifting back to hers. “That part did register.”

His thumb brushed lightly at her waist, instinctive, then stilled—like he was reminding himself to stay exactly where he was. Exactly how he was.

“I just—” He shook his head once, smiling at himself. “I needed to hear it. From you. Not assume. I’m trying to be better about that.”

Then he lifted one hand, slow enough she could stop him if she wanted to—gave her every chance—and cupped her face. His palm was warm against her cheek, his fingers fitting naturally along her jaw like they’d learned her there already. His thumb traced a soft arc just beneath her cheekbone, reverent, almost awed.

“You’re right,” he murmured, voice steadier now. “And I really appreciate you saying it.”

He leaned in again, not rushed, not claiming—just closing the space she’d already chosen to erase. His forehead brushed hers first, a pause that felt like a breath held together.

Then he kissed her.

Gentle, but deeper than before. Unafraid now. His mouth moved against hers with a quiet confidence, like he trusted the moment instead of trying to manage it. His hand stayed at her face, anchoring her there, the other resting at her back—supportive, present, unmistakably there without pressing.

It was a kiss that said thank you as much as yes.

And when he finally eased back just enough to breathe, he didn’t move his hand away. Didn’t pull her from his lap. He just looked at her, smiling softly, eyes warm and a little stunned in the best way.

Nate didn’t rush it.

He never had with her—not really—and he wasn’t about to start now.

As the kiss deepened, as her mouth softened against his with that quiet certainty that still made something unsteady bloom in his chest, his hand slid from her face to her back. Slow. Intentional. A path he chose rather than stumbled into.

His palm settled at the small of her back, fingers splaying there like they’d been meant to find that place all along. He felt the warmth of her through the thin fabric, the gentle curve of her spine, the way she fit against him like she wasn’t questioning it anymore either.

His thumb brushed lightly, almost absentmindedly, a soft graze that wasn’t asking for more—just acknowledging what was already there. Her closeness. Her weight. Her choice.

The kiss changed then. Not sharper. Not hungrier.

Just fuller.

He kissed her like he was paying attention to every small response—the way her breath hitched, the way her hand tightened briefly in his hair, the way she stayed. He followed her lead without trying to take it over, letting the moment stretch and unfold instead of rushing toward anything beyond it.

His other hand stayed steady at her side, anchoring her, grounding both of them. He felt aware of everything all at once: the faint scent of her hair, the warmth of her body, the quiet crackle of the candles, the storm murmuring outside like it knew better than to interrupt.

And somewhere in that softness, in that closeness, he realized how little he cared about anything beyond this room.

The town.
The looks.
The history people whispered about.

None of it mattered right now.

All that mattered was that Ivy was here—with him—kissing him back like she meant it.

When he finally eased the kiss, just enough to breathe, his forehead rested against hers again. His hand didn’t leave her back. If anything, his fingers curled slightly, protective without being possessive.

“Hey,” he murmured, voice low and warm, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Still okay?”

Not because he doubted her.

But because he respected her enough to keep asking.

And because staying right here—with her, like this—felt like something worth doing carefully.

Ivy kissed him back like she meant it.

Not just with her mouth, but with every inch of her—her fingertips drifting from his shoulder to his neck, sliding up with quiet certainty as she moved with him, not around him. Her touch wasn’t hesitant. It was present. Sure. Intentional. Like she’d stopped thinking about how it looked and started focusing on how it felt.

And it felt good.

God, he felt good.

Warm and steady beneath her hands, all lean strength and quiet gentleness. He held her like she was something valuable—not fragile, not breakable—but important. Like she was something he’d choose again, even now that he could.

The kiss deepened, and her breath caught a little as his hand slipped to her lower back. She let her hand trail higher, fingers curling at the back of his neck, thumb brushing just beneath his ear.

Everywhere he touched her felt like warmth.
Everywhere she touched him felt like home.

And when he finally eased the kiss, when his voice—low and careful—cut softly through the candlelight with “Still okay?”—

Her smile bloomed before her eyes even opened.

She kept her forehead resting against his for a second, letting herself feel it. The honesty. The care. The way he kept checking in—not to slow them down, but to make sure they were still walking the same path.

Then she pulled back just far enough to look at him. Her eyes were bright, her expression open, flushed with affection and something wry just beneath the surface.

“I’m okay,” she said warmly, brushing her thumb once along the back of his neck. “I’m more than okay.”

Then, tilting her head slightly, her smile tipped into something playful—equal parts teasing and sincere.

“But just so we’re clear—” she continued, voice dipping toward a conspiratorial hush, “—my lack of impulse control tonight doesn’t get you out of doing the work.”

She lifted one brow meaningfully, her hand still resting lightly at his shoulder.

“I still expect the dates. The flowers. The soft little gestures Bedford Falls will absolutely gossip about. You don’t get to skip courting just because you’re an excellent kisser.”

Her smile softened again as she said it, letting the affection seep back into her voice.

“I’m just… letting you do both at the same time.”

She leaned in then—no kiss this time, just a brush of her nose against his, a quiet indulgence, a way to stay close. A way to say this is yours to keep exploring, without taking any of it back.

Because she wasn’t taking it back.

And for the first time in a long time, Ivy didn’t want to.

Nate nodded—slow, deliberate—like he was filing every word away somewhere permanent.

Not joking.
Not deflecting.
Not pretending this was lighter than it was.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said quietly, and there was a hint of a smile there, but the kind that came from sincerity more than humor. His forehead stayed close to hers, his hand still steady at the small of her back like he wasn’t planning on moving anytime soon.

He exhaled softly, a little laugh slipping out under his breath—not nervous this time, just warm. Earnest.

“I hear you,” he added, voice low, grounded. “All of it.”

His thumb brushed once, slow and reassuring, against her back—nothing demanding, just present. Like punctuation, not a push.

“And for the record,” he continued, eyes searching hers, open and sure, “I don’t want to skip the work. I want the dates. I want the flowers. I want to show up in all the ways that make this feel real—not rushed, not borrowed.”

A beat.

Then, a little softer—but with unmistakable intent:

“I promise I’ll spoil the hell out of you,” he said, a quiet grin tugging at his mouth. Not crude. Not exaggerated. Just… him. “In the way you deserve. Thoughtful. Intentional. The kind that makes people talk because it’s obvious I mean it.”

He leaned in just enough to brush his nose against hers again, mirroring her earlier closeness, staying right in that shared space.

“And I’m good with both,” he murmured. “The courting and the kissing.”

His smile softened, eyes warm and steady on hers.

“Especially if it’s with you.”

Nate stayed right there, close enough that pulling away would’ve felt like a lie.

His thumb traced a slow, absent arc at the small of her back—nothing impatient, nothing claiming—just a quiet reassurance that he was still with her, still choosing this moment exactly as it was.

“I don’t say things I don’t mean,” he added softly, like it mattered she understood that part most. His voice wasn’t loud enough to compete with the storm or the crackle of candlelight, but it didn’t need to be. It was steady. Certain. “And I don’t promise things unless I plan on keeping them.”

He leaned in just enough to press a gentle kiss to her temple, then her cheek—unhurried, reverent, like he was learning her face the way you learned a place you wanted to remember.

“I want to learn you,” he said quietly. “Not rush you. Not skip ahead. Just… show up. Again and again. Bring coffee the way you like it. Remember the little things. Be the person you don’t have to second-guess.”

His forehead rested against hers again, a small smile curving at the corner of his mouth—soft, almost shy in its sincerity.

“And if that means I’m the guy who walks you through town holding your hand while everyone speculates wildly?” he murmured. “I think I can live with that.”

Another gentle kiss—this one barely there, just a brush of warmth.

“I like who I am with you,” he admitted. “Feels quieter. Feels honest.”

He didn’t rush the moment after that. Didn’t fill the space. He just stayed—hands warm, posture relaxed, presence unmistakably there—letting the sweetness settle in like it belonged.

Because for him, it already did.

Ivy’s breath caught in her chest—not because he’d said something surprising, but because he hadn’t.

Because for once, there wasn’t a sales pitch buried in the affection.
No fast-talking charm with strings tucked behind it.
No ulterior motive dressed up in romance.

Just Nate.

Still him. Still thoughtful. Still new in so many ways.
But also—changed. Or changing, maybe.
Enough to make her believe that his promises weren’t made to be forgotten.

Her eyes searched his, slow and quiet. She didn’t answer right away, not because she didn’t know what to say, but because she didn’t want to rush the way it felt to hear him say it. She was used to smooth. To polished. To shiny declarations that meant very little the morning after.

But this—this wasn’t that.

“I believe you,” she said softly. No tremble. No hesitation. Just truth, warm and grounded in the center of her chest. “You don’t feel like a city boy saying all the right things anymore.”

Her smile tilted, subtle and fond. “You feel like you.”

Then she leaned in again, her lips brushing his with a gentleness that made her fingertips buzz. It wasn’t a kiss meant to spark or stun—it was a kiss that lingered, that melted, that spoke all the small things she didn’t have words for yet.

And just as their mouths met again, a soft flicker passed through the room—lights dimming, candles trembling faintly from the shift in the power. The storm outside gave a low grumble, but the electricity held.

Ivy didn’t flinch.

Didn’t even notice right away, if she was honest.
Because all she felt was the warmth of his mouth against hers.
The steady rise and fall of his chest under her hand.
The quiet safety of a moment she wasn’t used to having—and didn’t want to let go of too soon.

When she finally did ease back, it wasn’t with reluctance. It was with something softer, more settled.

A quiet hum of contentment passed her lips as she gently shifted off his lap—not far, just enough so she could stretch her legs across his and settle at his side. Her body curled into the shape of him like it had always known how. Like her place had been waiting there.

Her head rested near his shoulder, one hand still tracing idle patterns against the fabric of his shirt, like she needed to keep reminding herself he was real.

She glanced toward the windowsill, the one that had once held the silent judgment of her black cat. But Eames was gone now—slipped off at some point during all the kissing. Not dramatically. Just… vanished, as cats do.

Probably in protest, she thought with an amused little breath. Or boredom. Or some inscrutable feline instinct that said this is none of my business.

Ivy smiled faintly at the empty spot before tucking herself a little closer into Nate’s side, legs still draped across his.

“Guess he figured I didn’t need supervision anymore,” she murmured, voice barely above the sound of the rain.

Then, quieter—more to herself than to him, though he was close enough to hear it all the same:

“...or maybe he finally trusts you too.”

Nate let out a soft breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding, the kind that came when something settled instead of tightened.

He shifted just enough to make room for her, an instinctive adjustment, his arm sliding comfortably behind her shoulders so she could rest there without having to ask. His hand found her upper arm, thumb moving in slow, absent circles like it belonged there—and maybe it already did.

He glanced toward the empty windowsill, then back down at her, a quiet smile tugging at his mouth.

“Yeah,” he murmured, voice low and warm. “That’s… huge, coming from him.”

A beat passed. Rain tapped steadily against the glass, the storm finally finding its rhythm.

“I like to think I’ve passed some kind of test,” he added, lightly, the humor soft-edged. “Or at least earned a temporary stay of judgment.”

His gaze dropped to the way her fingers traced the fabric of his shirt, the unthinking intimacy of it hitting him harder than any kiss had. He swallowed once—not from nerves this time, but from something steadier. Something that felt like belonging sneaking up on him.

“I don’t feel supervised either,” he said quietly. “I feel… trusted.”

His thumb stilled for a moment, then resumed its gentle path.

“And I don’t take that lightly. From you. Or from a cat who could absolutely ruin my life if he wanted to.”

He leaned his head just enough to rest it lightly against hers, temple to hair, breathing her in—clean, warm, faintly sweet. Coconut and tea and something that felt like home, even if he wasn’t ready to name it that yet.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said, not dramatic, not declarative. Just honest. “Not tonight. Not… like that.”

Another small pause, filled only by rain and shared warmth.

“And for what it’s worth,” he added softly, a smile in his voice, “I really like being trusted by you.”

His arm tightened just a fraction, protective without being possessive, and he stayed there with her—letting the storm do its thing outside while everything inside felt unexpectedly, quietly right.

Nate shifted just enough to look at her, really look at her, the way you did when you were trying to memorize something without making it obvious. One hand lifted from her arm and came up slowly, deliberately, giving her every chance to pull away if she wanted to—but she didn’t.

His fingers brushed a loose strand of hair where it had fallen across her cheek. He tucked it back with a careful ease, knuckles grazing her skin, his thumb lingering just for a second at her jaw like he was grounding himself there. She was still warm in his lap, still settled, still choosing this, and the fact of it made his chest feel full in a way he wasn’t used to.

He smiled, soft and a little crooked.

“So,” he said quietly, the word almost tentative despite the confidence growing under it, “what are you doing Friday night?”

The question wasn’t casual. It wasn’t tossed out to fill space. There was intention in it, and a gentleness too—like he wasn’t assuming the answer, just hoping for the chance.

His hand slid from her hair to rest at her waist again, steady and respectful, thumb brushing lightly at her side. He leaned in just enough that his voice dropped, private and warm.

“I was thinking…” A pause. He exhaled, a small, almost amused breath. “I’d like to take you someplace nice. Not fancy-for-the-sake-of-it nice. Just… good. Thoughtful. The kind of place where the food’s worth talking about and the music doesn’t shout over you.”

He glanced at her, searching her face—not for permission to want this, but to see if she wanted it too.

“And if you’re up for it,” he added, a hint of excitement creeping in now, honest and unpolished, “maybe we make a night of it. Head into Nashville. Dinner, a walk, something live if it feels right. Nothing packed, nothing rushed. We come back when we’re ready, not when the clock says we should.”

His thumb traced a slow, absent line at her waist as he spoke, like he couldn’t help touching her while he imagined it—her laugh in a different setting, the way she’d look under city lights that weren’t trying to impress anyone.

“No pressure,” he said, meaning it. “I just… I want to take you out. Properly. Do the whole thing. Pick you up. Open doors. Let the town gossip about something real for a change.”

A small smile curved at his mouth as he leaned his forehead briefly against hers again.

“And if Friday’s a no,” he added lightly, “I can wait. But I figured I’d ask now—while you’re still sitting in my lap and I’m feeling dangerously brave.”

His arm stayed secure around her, not holding her in place, just there—steady, warm, present—while he waited for her answer.

Ivy didn’t answer right away.

Not because she was unsure—she wasn’t—but because something about the question, the moment, him, made her want to hold still and feel it.

The way his voice dropped, not to seduce but to soften.
The way he didn’t just invite her out—he painted a picture. A version of the night with texture and thought and space for her.
The way he said “take you out properly” like it meant something. Like she meant something.

Her hand was still resting lightly at his side, fingers curved with casual familiarity, but the moment his forehead touched hers again, her grip tightened slightly—more instinct than thought.

She let her eyes fall closed for half a beat, smiling faintly. Not the polite kind. Not the kind meant to be charming.

The kind that happened when you felt chosen in a way that wasn’t performative.
The kind that slipped out when the room was warm and the world was quiet and the right person had just asked you something that felt like hope.

She opened her eyes, leaned back just enough to see him fully, and then—

“Friday sounds perfect,” she said softly, voice low but clear. “I’d really like that.”

Her thumb traced a light circle against his ribs, a quiet mirror of the way he’d been touching her all night. Grounding. Natural. Like maybe they’d been doing this for longer than they had.

“I don’t need fancy,” she added, her gaze steady on his, “but thoughtful? That kind of gets me every time.”

A hint of a smirk curved at the corner of her mouth, but it didn’t quite reach teasing—it was too full of something warmer.
Admiration. Anticipation. Affection.

Then she shifted slightly, just enough to lean in and brush another kiss—quick, soft, intentional—against his mouth.

Not to stall.
Not to escalate.
Just because she could. Because she wanted to. Because something in her had quietly, irrevocably decided he was safe to kiss just because the moment called for it.

“Also,” she murmured against his lips, “you should definitely feel brave. You just asked out a woman with a notoriously grumpy cat and impeccable standards.”

Her smile widened then, her cheek brushing his as she nestled closer again, her head resting near his shoulder once more.

Outside, the rain kept falling.
Inside, the candles flickered.
And somewhere in her chest, something settled that hadn’t settled in a very long time.

Friday was already circled in her mind.

And not because of the date.
Because of him.

Nate smiled before he could stop himself.

Not the charming one he used when he wanted to deflect. Not the crooked, half-armed grin he wore when he was being clever. This one was quieter—surprised, almost—a smile that came from relief settling somewhere deep in his chest.

“Perfect,” he echoed softly, like he wanted to test the word out loud. Like he wanted to make sure it stayed real.

His arm tightened just a little around her, not to pull her closer—she was already there—but to acknowledge the yes. To mark it. His thumb brushed once at her side, slow and grounding, before stilling like he didn’t want to rush anything now that he had it.

“I promise,” he said, voice warm and earnest, “thoughtful is something I can do. I might even be good at it.”

A quiet beat passed, filled with rain and candlelight and the kind of closeness that didn’t ask for more than it was already giving.

When she kissed him again—brief, intentional—he laughed under his breath against her mouth, the sound low and fond. His forehead rested against her temple afterward, and for a second he just stayed there, breathing her in.

“Noted,” he murmured. “Impeccable standards. Dangerous cat. High emotional stakes.”

Then, a little more softly—honestly—

“Worth it.”

His fingers slid up her arm, stopping at her shoulder, a gentle squeeze like punctuation. He didn’t push the moment forward. Didn’t need to. The anticipation was already there, humming quietly between them.

“I’m excited to see where the night takes us. No rushing. No agenda.”

He glanced toward the windows, the storm still painting the glass, then back down at her with a small, content exhale.

“And for the record,” he added, brushing his cheek lightly against her hair, “I’m really glad it’s you I get to take out.”

He stayed there with her—unhurried, steady—letting Friday feel close without needing to touch it yet.
