He was already reaching.

By the time the words left her lips—I need that—his hand was cradling the back of her neck again, thumb sliding up into the damp tendrils of her hair like she was something sacred and fragile and still so fucking strong. His other hand settled over hers on his chest, anchoring them both to something steadier than grief.

“Okay,” he whispered.

Not because he didn’t have more to say.
But because okay meant I’ve got you.
It meant you don’t have to explain. Not tonight.

He kissed her forehead—slow and reverent, like he was pressing a seal into wax. Then he pulled away just enough to look at her—really look.

Swollen eyes.
Tear-drenched lashes.
That silk dress clinging to her like memory and armor.

And still—he’d never seen anything more beautiful.

Not because she was broken.

Because she let him see what survived.

“Come on,” he said, voice hoarse from the weight of the moment. “We’ll find the dumbest movie in the world. You’ll hate it. I’ll pretend I don’t love it. You can steal whatever you want—my shirt, the blanket, hell, take the whole fucking bed. It’s yours anyway.”

His smile was crooked. Tender. A little wrecked in the way love tends to be after weathering something that mattered.

“And tomorrow—if the ghosts show up again? We tell ’em they’re late to the party, and they don’t get a seat.”

He brushed his knuckles along her cheek. Slow. Gentle. Like she was both ember and ash and the spark he’d always wait for.

“You can be soft with me every day, Emilia,” he added, quieter. “Even on the days you forget how. I’ll remember for both of us.”

Then he took her hand. Interlaced their fingers.

And led her back toward the bedroom—toward peace, toward bad TV and stolen blankets and his oldest shirt draped over the curve of her shoulder like the armor she chose this time.

Not to protect her.

But to remind her she didn’t have to fight.

Not here.

Not with him.

The bedroom was dim, the late light outside softening into shadows, filtering through gauzy curtains that barely moved in the breeze from the cracked window. It smelled like them—cedarwood, lavender, skin. Her sanctuary. Their sanctuary.

Lilith let go of his hand only long enough to walk to the edge of the bed.

Her fingers reached for the zipper at the side of her dress—slow, deliberate. Not seductive, not staged. Just real. The silk slipped down her body in one fluid sigh, pooling at her feet like she was shedding more than just fabric. Like she was letting go of the version of herself that had walked in ready for a fight she didn’t need to finish.

She stood there a beat longer, in nothing but bare skin and the quiet between them, before crossing to the dresser.

Pulled open the second drawer.

Found his shirt.

The soft black one she always stole, worn thin with time and love, smelling faintly like his cologne and last night’s laughter. She pulled it over her head, and it swallowed her in comfort—hitting her mid-thigh, sleeves brushing her knuckles. Like being held.

Like coming home, again.

She climbed onto the bed wordlessly. Not dramatic. Not distant. Just tired in a way that lived in the bones.

Tucking one leg beneath her, she curled toward the headboard and turned to face him, her hand reaching out, palm open.

“Come here.”

No demand. No apology in her tone yet.

Just an invitation.

When he sat beside her, she scooted closer. Tucked her knees to her chest beneath the soft drape of his shirt and leaned into his side. Her head found his shoulder. Her fingers toyed with the hem of his sleeve like she had earlier—absent-minded, intimate, hers.

And then she finally said it.

The words low. Steady. Sincere.

“I know you said I didn’t have to apologize,” she murmured, “but I need to.”

Her thumb brushed a slow, absent circle against his arm.

“Because you didn’t deserve that. Not the tone. Not the snap. Not the storm I threw over a bruise that wasn’t yours to press on.”

She tilted her head, looked up at him, expression soft but clear.

“I’m working on it. I am. But sometimes it still feels like my trauma wants to speak first and I don’t realize it until the words are already out of my mouth.”

A beat.

“I’m sorry, Nico. For all of it.”

Her voice caught—just a little. But she didn’t flinch.

“I love you so much it scares me. Not because you’ll hurt me—but because you won’t. Because this is good, and my whole life has taught me that good doesn’t last.”

Her eyes glistened, but this time, it wasn’t breaking her.

She was staying. Present. Open.

“I want to unlearn that with you.”

She rested her head back against his shoulder, pulling his hand into her lap, lacing their fingers together.

“So… find the dumbest movie you can. I want something ridiculous. Explosions. Magic. Talking animals, maybe. Something that feels nothing like ghosts.”

She turned her face into his arm.

“And you better cuddle me while it plays,” she added, a hint of a smile tugging her lips.

He didn’t say anything at first.

Didn’t need to.

Just sat there and held her hand a little tighter, let their fingers settle like roots twining together—grounding, growing. His other hand rose to her thigh under the hem of his shirt—his shirt, her armor—fingers spreading warm and steady over the bare skin there like he was writing something into her without needing to speak it.

You’re safe.
I’m here.
We’re still us.

The silence between them wasn’t tense now. It was thick with meaning, soft with forgiveness, alive with the kind of love that didn’t demand repair—it offered it.

He tilted his head down and kissed her hairline.

Once. Long. Sure.

And then his voice, low and husky and so goddamn steady, curled around her like a second blanket.

“Emilia…”

He said her name like a vow.

“I know that storm wasn’t about me,” he said quietly. “But it still matters to me—because you do. And I’d rather stand in it with you than watch you try to weather it alone.”

His thumb brushed over her knuckles again, slow and patient.

“You don’t have to apologize for surviving the way you did. For flinching at shadows someone else left behind. You’re not broken—you’re brave.”

He turned slightly so he could see her face better, their fingers still locked.

“And I’m not scared of your trauma,” he added. “I’m only scared of not loving you well enough through it.”

He smiled then—soft and crooked and so completely wrecked by her.

“I’m in this for the long haul. All the messy middle parts. All the quiet repairs. I’m not here for perfect. I’m here for you.”

He leaned down and kissed her—barely more than a brush of mouths, but it lingered like promise.

“And just for the record…” he murmured against her lips, “I will be cuddling you. That was never in question.”

Then, like the shift of a tide—

He reached for the remote.

Flipped through the ridiculous queue he’d curated for moments exactly like this.

“Explosions, magic, talking animals,” he repeated, tone teasing now, light enough to make her chest loosen. “Sounds like a documentary about our relationship.”

He smirked.

Selected the most absurd-looking animated fantasy film he could find.

The screen lit the room in soft blue as he settled back against the pillows, tugging her fully into his side, arm wrapping around her shoulders like a shield made of warmth and belonging.

“There,” he said. “Now you’re trapped.”

A pause.

Then his lips against her temple again.

“Exactly where I want you.”

She let out the quietest laugh—barely more than a breath, but real. Real in that way only Nico could pull from her, even after she’d unraveled in his arms like threadbare silk.

Her body melted into his without hesitation, cheek pressed to his chest, breath syncing with the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. He didn’t rush her. Didn’t move to distract or fix. Just let her exist here—tucked beneath his arm, his shirt swallowing her frame, their souls settling into something that felt like a balm instead of a bandage.

And that movie?

Absolutely ridiculous.

An animated goat was sword-fighting a dragon within minutes, and she huffed a laugh into his shoulder, fingers curling lightly against his ribs.

“Ti amo,” she whispered.

Simple. Honest. So soft it barely made it past her lips.

But he heard it.

Because of course he did.

She turned her head up, met his gaze with eyes still a little pink, lashes wet, but steadier now—anchored by him. By this.

“Always,” she added in English. “Even when I’m difficult. Even when I don’t know how to let the past stay where it belongs.”

Her voice was still quiet, still raw, but there was something stronger behind it now.

“I never knew love like this could feel easy in the hard moments.”

She kissed his jaw—gentle, lingering.

“Grazie,” she whispered. “Per non lasciarmi andare.”

Thank you for not letting me go.

She curled closer then, thigh draped across his, her hand slipping beneath the hem of his shirt to rest over his heart.

The movie played on, absurd and chaotic and perfect in its own way.

But the real story was here.

Between them.

In the warmth they didn’t have to earn. In the safety they built from ruin. In the soft, relentless way Nico loved her—even when she came to him in pieces.

Especially then.

Nico didn’t look away.

Not from her teary lashes, not from the softness in her voice, not even from the quiet war she’d just fought to let herself speak so honestly.

He heard it.

Every word. Every breath between them.

His jaw clenched—not from tension, but from the sheer ache of loving her this much. Of holding someone so bright and breakable and real in his arms and knowing, knowing, she was choosing him even when it hurt.

His hand slid into her hair, fingertips gentle at the nape of her neck. Grounding her. Grounding him.

“Ti amo anch’io,” he said, voice rough, low—like it had scraped its way out of his ribs. “Sempre. Even when you forget how to be soft with yourself.”

He kissed the top of her head, then her temple, then just held her.

Let her thigh stay tangled over his. Let her hand stay over his heart. Let the stupid animated goat clang swords in the background while their quiet filled the space between scenes.

She was breathing slower now.

Still tucked beneath his arm, still wrapped in the black shirt that stretched across her skin like memory.

And all he could think—watching her settle, feeling her thumb make slow, absent-minded circles over his chest—was I will never take this for granted.

This was not just survival.

This was sacred.

“You’re not difficult,” he murmured into her hair. “You’re learning how to be loved without condition. That’s not hard for me—it’s the easiest thing I’ve ever done.”

Another kiss, this one to her knuckles as he pulled their joined hands to his mouth.

“And if the past ever tries to come for you again,” he whispered, “it’s going to have to get through me first.”

The animated goat tripped over a rock and the dragon caught on fire.

Lilith snorted.

He smiled.

And just like that—wrapped around each other on the couch, movie light flickering against tired faces—they stayed.

Still learning.
Still choosing.
Still theirs.

Lilith felt it—that shift.

The one that happened when your soul finally exhaled after holding its breath for too long.

The ghosts that had clawed at the edges of her heart only minutes ago? Gone. Not banished by force or fury—but dissolved by something gentler. Something she hadn’t known could last.

Him.

She nuzzled into his chest, inhaled the scent of his skin—warmth, cologne, the faint hint of sugar from earlier. Her body curved to fit him like it was second nature now. Like it always had been.

And for the first time all day, she wasn’t bracing.

She was being.

Held. Chosen. Safe.

His words still echoed in her head. You're not difficult. You're learning how to be loved without condition.

God.

He made it sound so simple. So beautiful. Like she was worth loving at every angle—even the jagged ones.

Her fingers curled around his, bringing their joined hands to rest between them. She leaned up just enough to press a kiss to the corner of his jaw—lazy and affectionate.

“You make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world,” she murmured. “Even when I’m a mess. Especially then.”

Her smile was quiet, but it reached her eyes now—soft and real and impossibly full.

“I don’t care how dumb this movie is,” she added, settling back into the crook of his arm, her leg still draped over his, “as long as I get to watch it like this.”

She turned her face up, caught his gaze for a heartbeat.

Then, almost shyly—

“My whole world’s right here.”

The animated goat screamed something dramatic.

She didn’t look away from Nico.

Just curled in tighter. Let herself enjoy this—him—with no guilt, no fear, no expectation other than now.

The past could wait.

Because tonight?

There was no haunting.

Just love.
And Nico.
And the kind of peace she never thought she’d be lucky enough to feel again.

Nico didn’t move.

Didn’t speak right away.

Just felt—her weight against him, the press of her kiss at his jaw, the way her voice softened when it was only meant for him. The way her confession landed in his chest like something sacred.

My whole world’s right here.

He swallowed. Once. Hard.

Because she didn’t say things like that lightly.

And he didn’t hear them like that either. Not after the months it took to coax her walls down brick by brittle brick. Not after watching her flinch from kindness like it was a trick. Not after all the times she stood in rooms full of applause and still looked like she was bleeding under her skin.

So when she said that?

He held it.

Breathed it in like prayer.

His thumb brushed over the back of her hand, slow and steady, grounding. Like his heartbeat, like his presence, like every unspoken promise he hadn’t had to voice since the first time she let him touch her and didn’t flinch.

He leaned in, nose brushing her temple, lips soft against her hairline.

“You deserve this,” he whispered. “Not just the softness. Not just the love. The peace, too.”

A pause. A beat of silence.

Then, quieter: “I’ll remind you as many times as you need.”

He kissed her again, then rested his head atop hers.

Outside, the city glittered—restless and glowing.

But inside?

It was stillness.

It was her laughter at something absurd on the screen. It was the quiet way she breathed against him. It was the warmth of her legs tangled in his and the way she smelled like perfume and pastry and home.

He didn’t need to look at anything else.

Because everything that mattered was in his arms.
And for the first time in a long time?

He didn’t feel haunted either.

Just whole.
Just hers.
Just here.

Lilith looked up at him through her lashes, lips curling into a smile that was equal parts soft and wicked. The kind of smile that said I love you and I could ruin you for sport—but would rather kiss you slowly until you forgot your own name.

She trailed her fingers along the hem of his shirt—her shirt now—absently playing with the fabric like it was a secret she wasn’t quite ready to give up.

“Well,” she murmured, voice like velvet dipped in honey, “you’re gonna make it really hard to keep my reputation as a heartless ice queen if you keep saying things like that.”

She leaned in a little, brushing her nose against his jaw, lips just barely grazing his skin.

“I mean, my whole world’s right here?” she echoed, teasing herself now. “God, who is she?”

A beat.

Then quieter—quicker, like the truth slipped out before she could dress it up:

“But it’s true.”

Her hand moved to his chest again, right over his heart.

“This… the way you hold me? The way you see me? I’ve never had that before. And I keep thinking it’s gonna disappear, like I dreamed it up.”

She tilted her head back to meet his gaze, that glint still dancing in her eyes despite the vulnerability.

“So if this is a dream…”

She smirked, a little breathless.

“Don’t you dare wake me up.”

Then, with a lazy stretch, she curled back into his side, tugging his arm tighter around her waist like she knew he wouldn’t let go.

“Now hush,” she whispered, chin tipping toward the screen. “My emotionally unhinged goat prince is about to confess something tragic.”

And just like that—flirty, safe, and full of love—she stayed right there.

Exactly where she belonged.

my whole world’s right here, too.

He didn’t speak at first.

Just let her words settle like sugar in his chest—slow, sweet, irreversible. His arm stayed tight around her waist, fingers splayed like he could hold the moment there, right between her ribs and his. Like he could anchor her in it if she ever started drifting again.

“Don’t worry,” he murmured, voice rough at the edges but soft underneath. “If this is a dream, I’m not waking you up.”

A beat.

“I’m not going anywhere, either.”

His eyes found hers in the flickering light of the TV, the glow of some ridiculous animated goat prince casting shadows across her cheekbone—and still, she looked like the only real thing in the world.

“You think you’re the lucky one?” he said, low, his thumb brushing against the hem of her borrowed shirt. His shirt. “I get to hold you when you’re laughing. When you’re tired. When you’re unraveling. I get to be the one who sees all of it—and stays.”

He leaned in, forehead brushing hers.

“That’s not luck, Lilith. That’s the kind of miracle people write songs about.”

And then, quieter—because some things weren’t meant to be loud:

“I used to wonder what it would feel like to come home to someone who saw all of me. Turns out, it feels like this.”

His lips found her temple. Her cheek. Her mouth.

Gentle. Grateful. Like prayer.

Then he tucked her in closer, her leg still tangled with his, his arm draped heavy and sure across her waist.

“Now hush,” he whispered against her skin, smiling as the goat prince wailed something tragic in the background. “My emotionally unstable royal animal counterpart is about to have a moment.”

He didn’t need to say I love you.
Not yet.
Because everything about the way he touched her, held her, looked at her like the world began and ended in her breath—

Said it for him.

Lilith melted.

There wasn’t another word for it.

Her whole body softened under the weight of his voice, his arms, his truth. That kind of quiet, devastating affection that didn’t need a spotlight—just skin and breath and the steady thrum of a heart that knew hers by memory now.

She didn’t answer right away.

Just curled in closer, nose brushing his collarbone, fingers tracing lazy circles against his chest like she could memorize the rhythm of forever by touch alone.

But then—

“Well,” she murmured, voice still husky from earlier tears, but touched with something warm now, playful, hers, “if we’re collecting miracles… I call dibs on yours.”

She looked up at him, a hint of smirk playing on her lips.

“Because I think I’m officially obsessed with the way you say things that make me want to cry and kiss you at the same time.”

A beat.

“You’re very inconvenient, Mr. Romano.”

Her hand slid up to rest over his heart again, her thumb brushing just above the fabric. Slower now. Intentional.

“I used to come home and take off my makeup and feel… lonelier. Like the real me wasn’t worth the noise.”

She swallowed, then added softly:

“But with you? This version of me? Hair a mess. Crying through goat movies. In your shirt?”

She smiled—drowsy and dangerous, full of affection.

“I’ve never felt more seen.”

A pause. Then, leaning in:

“Lucky you,” she whispered.

And kissed him.

Just once.

But it lingered like a promise.

And when she pulled back, she tucked herself beneath his arm again and sighed like a girl who didn’t have to be brave anymore.

Because she wasn’t surviving this time.

She was loved.
