The sudden emptiness when he lifted her off him left Lenora gasping, the loss of that thick, stretching fullness sharp enough that her body clenched around nothing. She felt the sure strength in his hands as he turned her, the way he guided her down onto the sheets without hesitation, and something warm and steady settled under the heat. She went willingly, palms and knees finding the mattress, then dropped to her forearms when his palm pressed between her shoulder blades. The arch opened her further. She loved the way he handled her like this, decisive and careful at once, the same man who had spent years learning exactly how much she could take and how to give it to her.
The firm slap across her ass pulled a soft, startled sound from her throat, the brief sting blooming into warmth. Before it faded his fingers gripped the same cheek, holding her steady, and she felt the blunt press of him at her entrance. When he pushed in, slow and thorough, seating every thick inch until he was buried to the root, the deeper angle made her moan openly against the sheets. He filled her completely, the stretch intense and perfect, and the low groan he made when her walls clenched around him only made the feeling sharper. She loved him for the control in it, for the way he still took his time even when he was clearly as far gone as she was. He set the rhythm and she met it, pushing back into each deep, powerful stroke. His hand stayed firm between her shoulder blades, keeping her arched, while his thumb found her clit again and worked those firm, relentless circles timed to the moment he buried himself fully. The combination pulled continuous, broken sounds from her. She felt owned and cherished at the same time, the steady weight of him over her, the rough certainty of his touch, the way he adjusted the angle until every thrust dragged against the place that made her vision blur. When he leaned closer and spoke against the nape of her neck, voice rough and steady, telling her he had her, the words sank straight through her. She loved him so much in that moment it ached, the fierce, familiar devotion that lived under every filthy, careful thing he did to her. Lenora shifted her knees wider and lifted her ass higher, offering more of herself, deepening the arch so he could take her even more completely. The new angle let him sink impossibly deep on the next stroke. A long, open moan left her as she pushed back harder, meeting the full power of his hips, her body trembling with how thoroughly he filled her and how safely she felt held while he did it. Her free hand reached back again, covering his on her hip, fingers lacing through his and holding tight as she kept herself open and raised for him, taking every thick, deliberate thrust while the love and the heat blurred together until she couldn’t separate them. The tiny, building pulses between her legs had been gathering for minutes, each firm circle of his thumb and every deep thrust winding the sensation tighter. Lenora felt it crest without warning. Her breath locked, then broke on a soft, helpless moan she tried to muffle against the sheets. “Baby—” The word came out thin and shaking. “Oh my god, Jack—” She shattered while he was still buried deep. Her walls clenched hard around the thick length of him in long, rolling waves, the orgasm pulling through her so intensely that her thighs locked tight and her legs went rigid, holding herself completely still against the mattress. She didn’t pull away. She stayed arched and open, ass lifted, taking the continued stroke of his hips as the pleasure crashed through her in quiet, overwhelming pulses. Soft, broken sounds left her throat, half moan and half whimper, deliberately kept low because the kids were sleeping just down the hall. Her fingers tightened around his on her hip, gripping hard as her body trembled through it. “Don’t stop,” she whispered, the words unsteady and warm against the sheets, almost pleading. “Keep going… please, just like that.” Another soft moan slipped out when he thrust deep again, the aftershocks still fluttering around him. She held her legs tight and still, offering him the full, clenching heat of her while she came, her free hand fisting in the damp sheets. “Jack… baby, don’t stop.” The encouragement was quiet, breathless, meant only for him, her body soft and shaking beneath the steady rhythm he kept as she rode out every last wave. |

Jack felt the first hard clench of her walls around him and knew she was tipping over before the soft, helpless sounds slipped out against the sheets. The tight, wet heat of her gripped him so fiercely it sent a sharp pulse of pleasure straight up his spine, every rhythmic squeeze milking the thick length of his cock. For a second the instinct to ease off rose hard and fast. He wanted to slow the deep drive of his hips and give her room to ride the intensity without it turning sharp, the same careful adjustment he had made a hundred times over the years when she came this hard. But the quiet, breathless plea for him to keep going reached him clear and steady, and he followed it without hesitation, keeping the powerful rhythm exactly as it was and burying himself to the root on every stroke so she felt every thick inch.
His hand stayed locked on her hip, fingers digging into the soft, yielding flesh to hold her steady while his other hand worked between her legs. His thumb circled the swollen, slick bud of her clit in firm, relentless passes timed to every full thrust. The wet sound of their bodies meeting filled the quiet room, slick and filthy, the sheets already damp and warm beneath their knees and palms from the continuous slide of his cock into her. He could feel every long, rolling wave of her orgasm clamping down around him, the way her thighs had gone rigid and locked while she stayed arched and open. The fine tremor running through her legs transferred straight into his own as her inner walls fluttered and pulsed. He gritted his teeth against the urge to follow her over the edge right then, the heat of her still clenching and releasing in tight, rhythmic pulls that made his cock throb deeper inside her. He leaned closer, chest brushing the damp line of her spine, and answered the continued soft moans with a low, rough sound of his own. “I’ve got you,” he murmured against the warm, salt-slick skin at the nape of her neck, voice steady even as the heat in his gut burned hotter. “Not stopping.” The ordinary quiet of the house pressed in around them—the distant tick of the settling walls, the faint hum of the refrigerator downstairs, the knowledge that Rhett and Charlie were asleep just down the hall—and he kept his own voice quiet. Her fingers stayed laced tight through his on her hip, gripping hard through every pulse. The simple contact grounded him while he fucked her through it exactly the way she asked, the wet slap of his hips against her ass growing louder with every deliberate drive. The aftershocks kept fluttering around him long after the first peak, soft and rhythmic, each residual squeeze stroking him from base to tip. He felt every one of them. He wanted to ease the depth and let her catch her breath, but the quiet encouragement kept coming and he stayed with the hard, deliberate pace instead. Sweat had gathered at the small of her back where the cooler air from the cracked window touched it. Lamplight painted the flushed curve of her ass and the long, arched line of her spine as he drove into her. The wet slap of their bodies grew louder, slick and unmistakable, and he adjusted the pressure of his thumb against her clit just enough to keep the sensation sharp without tipping it into too much, circling the swollen, slippery flesh in firm, precise strokes while her walls continued to flutter around him. When the worst of the shaking finally eased he slowed just enough to pull out of her in one careful slide. The sudden loss of her tight, dripping heat made him groan low in his throat as cool air hit the slick length of his cock. He turned her onto her back with the same sure hands, guiding her down onto the warm, damp sheets so she faced him. One hand reached for the pillow near the headboard and slid it carefully under her hips, tilting her just enough to open the angle further and lift her for deeper access. He settled between her thighs, braced one forearm beside her head, and used the other hand to hitch her knee higher against his side before he pushed back into the slick, swollen heat of her in a single slow, thorough thrust, feeling every inch of her body stretch and close around him again. The new position let him sink deep while he watched her face in the lamplight, the wet heat of her still fluttering from the first orgasm. He kissed her then, slow and open, tasting the soft sounds still rising from her throat as his hips began to roll again in a steady, powerful rhythm, the blunt head of his cock dragging through her soaked, sensitive walls. His free hand slid up from her knee to cup the soft weight of her breast, thumb brushing over the tight, peaked nipple before trailing lower to stroke the damp skin of her stomach. He kept the thrusts deliberate, refusing to chase his own release even as the heat in his gut grew sharper with every wet slide, and brought his hand back between them to find her clit once more, the swollen bud slick and hypersensitive under his thumb. “Christ, you’re still so wet,” he said against her mouth, the words rough but quiet, then kissed her again before she could answer, deeper this time, tongue sliding against hers as he felt her walls clench around the thick intrusion of his cock. The wet sound of their bodies started up again, quieter now that the position had changed but no less urgent, the slick slide of him into her filling the space between their quiet breaths. He could feel how sensitive she still was, the fine flutter of her walls around him, and he used it carefully, dragging the blunt head of his cock against the spot that always made her breath fracture while his thumb kept the pressure exact on her clit. Cooler air from the window brushed the sweat along his back. The sheets had gone thoroughly damp beneath them, warm and smelling of sex. He varied the touch, sliding his hand from her clit up to stroke the soft, sensitive inner skin of her thigh, then higher again to cup her breast and roll the tight nipple between his fingers before returning to the swollen, slippery bud between her legs. Every few strokes he leaned down to kiss the damp skin of her throat, the corner of her mouth, the hinge of her jaw, keeping the contact easy and familiar even as the pace stayed deep and controlled, the wet heat of her gripping him tighter with every thrust. The second build was already gathering in the fine shake that returned to her thighs and the way her breathing shortened against his lips, her walls beginning to flutter more urgently around him. He stayed locked over her, chest brushing the soft press of her breasts with every thrust, and answered the soft moans that kept rising with low, rough sounds of his own. “Come for me again,” he murmured between kisses, voice steady, the words shaped against her mouth as he felt her growing wetter around him. “Just like that.” One hand stayed braced beside her head so he could watch every shift of expression across her face while the other never left the work between her legs for long, alternating between firm circles on her clit and slower strokes along the sensitive, damp skin of her inner thigh. The quiet house held the sounds they made—the slick meeting of their bodies, the soft creak of the bed, the quiet catch of her breath—while he worked her toward the next peak without letting himself follow yet. The pillow under her hips kept the angle deep and exact as he kept the rhythm deliberate and relentless, every thick inch of him sliding through her soaked, clenching heat. |

Lenora’s body stayed open and responsive beneath the steady drive of his hips, each deep stroke drawing another soft sound from her that she tried to keep quiet against the sheets. She held tight to the hand locked with hers on her hip and pushed back into the rhythm, thighs trembling as the lingering pulses of pleasure continued to move through her. The pressure between her legs never eased, and she answered it with low, breathy moans while the house stayed still around them.
When he finally slowed and withdrew, the sudden emptiness left her gasping at the loss of fullness. He turned her onto her back with sure hands and she went with him, settling against the warm, damp sheets as he slid the pillow beneath her hips. The tilt opened her further. She reached for him at once, one palm sliding up the solid plane of his chest while the other rested against his side, feeling the heat of his skin. He pushed back into her in one slow, thorough thrust and a quiet moan left her at the stretch, walls fluttering around the thick length of him. Every push shifted her breasts, the soft weight of them rising and settling again, skin flushed and faintly damp, nipples tight under the brush of air. She drew his free hand up and guided his palm to her cheek, holding it there so the broad warmth rested fully against her skin while he began to move inside her again. Her other hand trailed down his side, fingers rubbing slow circles over the tense muscle of his hip and the warm skin of his lower back. She arched faintly into the next deep stroke, feeling him fill her completely, and let her head tip back against the pillow for a moment. A soft sound caught in her throat as his hips rolled forward, the motion shifting her breasts once more. He kissed her and she answered, open and lingering, soft sounds caught between their mouths. His hand left her cheek only long enough to cup her breast, thumb brushing the peaked nipple, then drifted lower over her stomach before returning between her legs. She rolled her hips up to meet him, knees falling wider against the sheets, the pillow letting him sink deeper on every deliberate thrust. The second build gathered more gently than the first. She felt it in the fine shake returning to her thighs and the way her breathing shortened against his lips. Soft moans continued to slip free as her breasts shifted with every push, the lamplight catching the movement. Her fingers trailed along his jaw and down the side of his neck, rubbing lightly over warm skin while she stayed open beneath him. When he eased the kiss enough for air she looked up at him, mouth curving. “Have you seen yourself lately?” she murmured, voice low and warm. “Pretty sure I’m wet the majority of the time just from you existing in the same zip code.” She lifted her head and kissed him deeply, then let her legs spread further so the next slow thrust seated him fully. The smaller orgasm broke in softer pulses. She moaned into his mouth as she kissed him again, deep and unhurried, walls fluttering and clenching around him without the same overwhelming force. Her head fell back against the pillow, eyes half-closed, one hand still holding his against her cheek while the other rubbed slow circles over his shoulder. She stayed soft and responsive, taking every thick inch as the milder waves moved through her. Her fingers trailed lower again, stroking along his side and over the tense line of his hip as the aftershocks lingered. She pressed her mouth to his once more, lingering and open, then drew back just enough to speak against his lips. The sheets were warm and damp beneath her. Cooler air from the window brushed the sweat along her collarbones as she held him close. “Your turn,” she whispered. “I want you to come too.” She kept her legs spread wide around him, one heel resting lightly against the back of his thigh, and kissed him again while her hand continued its slow path over his skin. Her thumb stroked lightly along his wrist where his palm still rested against her cheek. She rolled her hips up in a longer glide, meeting the next deep thrust and holding him there for a moment before releasing. A soft, breathy sound left her as she did it again, breasts shifting with the motion, eyes fixed on his face. Her fingers rubbed gently over the muscle of his lower back, encouraging the rhythm without words while she stayed open and close beneath him. Lenora kissed the corner of his mouth, then the edge of his jaw, each one soft and unhurried, before returning to his lips. She stayed open beneath him, body still fluttering faintly around the thick length of him, offering the full slick heat of her while she held his face. Her breathing had steadied into something quieter, but the want remained clear as she whispered against his mouth once more that she was right there with him. Her free hand slid down between them for a moment, fingers trailing lightly along the place where they were joined before returning to his hip. She moaned softly into the next kiss, the sound low and warm, and spread her knees a fraction wider. The pillow under her hips kept the angle deep as she met each thrust, breasts rising and falling with the movement, her hand never leaving his cheek. She tipped her head back again, throat exposed, and let out a longer, quieter moan as he filled her completely. Her fingers tightened gently in his hair at the nape of his neck before trailing down to rub along his shoulder. She looked up at him through half-lidded eyes, lips parted, and kissed him once more, deep and slow, while her body stayed soft and welcoming around him. Lenora kept her legs wide and her hands moving over him in slow, trailing touches, one palm still guiding his against her face. She whispered his name against his mouth, then the quiet request again, voice sincere and warm in the lamplight. She stayed exactly where she was, open and close, breasts shifting with every deep push, waiting for him while the quiet house held around them both. |

Jack felt the softer pulses of her second climax begin to move through her, milder than the first but still unmistakable in the way her walls fluttered and clenched around the thick length of him. The heat of her stayed wet and welcoming, each gentle squeeze stroking him as he kept the steady, deliberate rhythm. He watched her face in the lamplight, the way her head tipped back against the pillow and her eyes half-closed, and answered the quiet moan that slipped from her with a low sound of his own. His hand stayed against her cheek where she held it, the broad warmth of his palm resting fully against her skin while his other hand braced beside her head. The pillow under her hips kept the angle deep, letting him sink fully on every thrust as the residual waves continued to move through her.
He kissed her through it, slow and open, tasting the soft sounds still rising from her throat. The sheets beneath them were warm and thoroughly damp, the scent of sex thick in the quiet air between their bodies. Cooler air from the cracked window brushed the sweat along his back and the flushed skin of her collarbones. He varied the touch, sliding his free hand from her breast down over the soft curve of her stomach, then lower again to stroke the sensitive inner skin of her thigh before returning to cup her breast and brush the tight peak of her nipple with his thumb. Every movement stayed unhurried, matching the gentler pace of her second peak while he stayed buried deep inside her. When she looked up at him with that small curve to her mouth and spoke, the familiar dry warmth in her voice pulled a quiet, rough laugh from his chest. He kissed her again before answering, deeper this time, the words shaped against her lips. “Yeah, I’ve noticed,” he said, voice low and steady. “Not complaining.” He felt her lift her head to meet him and answered the kiss fully, tongue sliding against hers as her legs spread farther and the next slow thrust seated him completely. The wet heat of her closed around him again, still fluttering from the milder orgasm, and he kept the rhythm exact, hips rolling with controlled force while his hand stayed against her cheek. He could feel his own release building now, heavier and more insistent with every deep slide into the slick, clenching heat of her. The quiet house held around them—the distant tick of settling walls, the faint hum of the refrigerator downstairs, the knowledge that Rhett and Charlie remained asleep down the hall—and he kept his breathing measured even as the pressure at the base of his spine tightened. Her fingers trailed along his jaw and down the side of his neck, rubbing lightly over warm skin, and the simple contact grounded him while he continued to move inside her. He kissed the corner of her mouth, then the edge of her jaw, then returned to her lips, keeping the contact easy and familiar even as the pace stayed deep. When she whispered that it was his turn and that she wanted him to come too, the quiet sincerity in her voice went straight through him. He answered with another low sound against her mouth and rolled his hips in a longer, more deliberate glide, seating himself fully and holding there for a moment before withdrawing and driving back in. The wet sound of their bodies meeting filled the small space between them, quieter than before but no less clear. He felt her heel rest lightly against the back of his thigh and the way her hand continued its slow path over his skin, encouraging without rushing. The pillow under her hips kept the angle exact, letting every thick inch of him slide through her soaked heat. He stayed locked over her, chest brushing the soft press of her breasts with every thrust, and let the pressure build without fighting it any longer. Her free hand slid down between them for a moment, fingers trailing lightly along the place where they were joined, and the brief touch made him groan low in his throat. He kissed her again, deeper this time, and felt the fine residual flutter of her walls around him as she stayed open and close. The lamplight caught the shift of her breasts with every push. Cooler air from the window stirred the curtains and brushed the damp skin along his shoulders. The final climb came faster once he stopped holding back. He braced more of his weight on the forearm beside her head and used the other hand to hitch her knee a fraction higher, opening her further as the rhythm deepened. Every stroke seated him to the root, the wet heat of her gripping him tighter, and he felt the familiar tightening low in his gut. He kissed the exposed line of her throat when she tipped her head back, then returned to her mouth, the soft sounds she made against his lips pushing him closer. The sheets whispered under their bodies. The quiet house remained still around the more urgent rhythm of their breathing. He came with a low, rough sound against her mouth, hips locking deep as the release rolled through him in long, heavy pulses. The heat of it spilled into her while her walls continued to flutter faintly around him, and he stayed buried to the root through every wave, forehead resting against hers as the last of the tension left his body. His hand stayed against her cheek, thumb stroking once along the soft skin there, while the other braced his weight so he would not collapse fully onto her. The quiet after the peak settled over them both, broken only by the soft catch of their breathing and the distant ordinary sounds of the house. He stayed inside her for several long seconds, letting the residual heat and closeness linger, then carefully withdrew. The sudden cool air against his slick skin made him shiver once. He reached for the clean towel he kept folded on the lower shelf of the nightstand, the motion practiced and unhurried, and cleaned them both with the same steady care he brought to most things. The sheets were a lost cause for the moment, warm and damp beneath them, but he wiped what he could before setting the towel aside. Lamplight still painted the room in soft gold. The cracked window let in just enough cooler air to stir the curtains. He eased the pillow out from under her hips and set it back near the headboard, then stretched out beside her on the damp sheets. One arm slid under her shoulders and drew her in against his chest, the other hand settling low on her back in a slow, absent stroke. Her skin was still warm and faintly damp under his palm. He pressed a quiet kiss to her temple, then another to the damp hair at her hairline, the gestures easy and familiar after years of the same quiet aftermath. The house ticked and settled around them. Somewhere down the hall a floorboard creaked once and then went still. “I love you,” he said, voice low and rough around the edges but steady. His hand kept its slow path along her back, tracing the line of her spine without hurry. The scent of sex and clean sweat still hung in the air between them. He could feel the fine residual tremor in her body easing as she settled against him. Outside the window the night remained quiet and ordinary. He reached for the glass of water on the nightstand next, the one he had brought up earlier without thinking much about it, and offered it to her first. When she took it he waited, watching the lamplight catch the movement of her throat as she drank, then took a swallow himself before setting the glass back. His free hand found hers and laced their fingers together loosely against his chest. The sheets had cooled a little under the open window. He tugged the edge of the blanket up over both of them without sitting up, the motion practical and automatic. The quiet stretched for a while, comfortable and unhurried. He kept his arm around her and let his breathing settle fully, the last of the tension leaving his shoulders. Somewhere in the house the refrigerator kicked on again with its familiar low hum. He turned his head enough to press another brief kiss to her hair, then rested his cheek against the top of her head. The mattress dipped slightly as he shifted to keep her more fully against him. His thumb stroked once across the back of her hand where their fingers stayed linked. The night held steady around them, the house settled and quiet with the kids asleep for good. His hand resumed the slow path along her back, tracing the familiar curve of her shoulder blade. The lamplight had softened further as the hours deepened outside. He felt the warmth of her skin against his and the easy weight of her body settled along his side, and let the ordinary quiet of the house hold them both while the last of the heat faded into something slower and steadier. |

Lenora remained quiet as the last of their closeness settled into a comfortable stillness, her hand resting against Jack’s cheek while she waited for her breathing to return to normal. Her eyes were heavy, and the warm glow from the bedside lamp made it particularly difficult to summon any enthusiasm for moving. When he carefully shifted away, she let her fingertips trail along his jaw before her hand fell against the pillow beside her head. The cooler air slipping through the cracked window made her shiver faintly, and she drew one knee toward the other beneath the sheets. For a moment, she simply watched him, her expression carrying that familiar combination of affection and sleepy contentment she never bothered disguising around him. There had been a time, early in their relationship, when she might have felt compelled to say something clever immediately afterward, filling the silence because she wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it. Eight years had changed that. She could lie beside her husband without speaking and feel perfectly understood.
When Jack reached toward the nightstand for the towel, however, a small smile began tugging at her mouth. Naturally, he had thought of that. Lenora wasn’t particularly surprised anymore, although she remained thoroughly entertained by his seemingly supernatural ability to anticipate practical necessities. She adjusted herself slightly when he returned to her, allowing him to help her freshen up without making the process unnecessarily difficult. Her hand settled against his forearm, and she watched him with an expression that became increasingly amused the longer she considered it. “You know, I really should’ve expected the towel,” she murmured, her voice still a little sleepy. “You probably had that sitting there before I even came into the bedroom.” Her smile widened as she tipped her face toward him. “Honestly, Jack, sometimes I think you could turn absolutely anything into a well-organized operation.” There was no criticism in her voice. If anything, her amusement was rooted in how much she adored the little habits that made him unmistakably himself. He had always been thoughtful in this particular way, never treating her comfort as something secondary to his own, and Lenora had never stopped appreciating it simply because the gestures had become familiar. She relaxed against the mattress once they were finished, letting him move the extra pillow from beneath her and return it to its usual place near the headboard. The change was immediately welcome, and she stretched her legs with a quiet sigh before allowing herself to sink into the bedding. Her gaze drifted toward the nightstand as he set the towel aside, then toward the considerably rumpled sheets beneath them. A more ambitious version of herself might have gotten up to replace them immediately. That version, however, appeared to have retired for the evening. Lenora was perfectly content to remain exactly where she was, particularly when Jack stretched out beside her and slipped his arm beneath her shoulders. She needed no further invitation. She turned toward him almost immediately, shifting close enough to rest her cheek against his chest while one arm curled loosely around his waist. Her body settled against his with the easy familiarity of a woman who had spent years discovering precisely how comfortable she could make herself against a man considerably larger than she was. The kiss against her temple brought a quiet smile to her face, and she closed her eyes when his lips touched her hair a second time. She felt the slow movement of his hand against her back and allowed herself to relax more completely, her fingers resting lightly along his side. There was something about these moments that she had always loved, something that had very little to do with whatever had happened beforehand and everything to do with how Jack treated the quiet afterward. He never seemed eager to separate himself from her. There was no sudden distance, no sense that affection had served its purpose and could now be set aside. He simply held her, the same way he held her when they watched television or when she climbed into his arms after a particularly exhausting day. When his voice finally broke the silence, telling her he loved her, Lenora felt her expression soften against his chest. She lifted her head enough to look at him, studying his familiar features for a moment before answering. “I love you, too.” Her smile became a little more pronounced. “An absolutely ridiculous amount, actually.” She leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against his chest before settling back into place. “But I think you figured that out somewhere around the second date.” When Jack reached for the glass of water, Lenora accepted it gratefully, shifting onto one elbow so she could drink without making an even greater mess of the sheets. The cool water was refreshing, and she took several unhurried swallows before handing the glass back to him. “Thank you, baby,” she said softly, watching as he took a drink himself. She appreciated the small consideration of his offering it to her first, although she didn’t feel the need to make an entire conversation out of it. Jack had been doing little things like that for years. He remembered to bring her water, saved the last of something he knew she liked, charged her phone when she forgot, and somehow always noticed when she’d fallen asleep on the couch without a blanket. Lenora had long since stopped keeping mental track of every kindness. There were too many, and more importantly, they weren’t favors she needed to repay. They were simply part of how they took care of each other. She smiled to herself when his hand found hers again, allowing their fingers to interlace as she returned to her place beside him. The blanket settling over them earned a pleased little sigh, and Lenora immediately tucked herself farther into the warmth of his side. The cool air from the window felt wonderful against her face now that the rest of her was comfortably covered. She adjusted her head against his shoulder and let her free hand rest along his chest, her fingertips occasionally moving in absent little patterns against his skin. The quiet house seemed especially peaceful at this hour. There were no toys being dragged across the hardwood, no enthusiastic declarations from Rhett about dinosaurs, and no tiny protests coming from Charlie’s bedroom because someone had committed the unforgivable offense of putting her down when she wanted to be held. Lenora loved those sounds more than she could explain, but she wasn’t above appreciating their absence every once in a while. She glanced toward the closed bedroom door, listening for a moment before settling more comfortably against Jack. Both children appeared to be sleeping peacefully, and she had no intention of disturbing the arrangement. Her gaze drifted toward the sheets once more, and a quiet laugh escaped her. “We’re absolutely going to regret not changing these,” she murmured, glancing up at him with an amused expression. She considered the possibility for another moment before giving a tiny, dismissive shake of her head. “Actually, no. Tomorrow me is going to regret it. Tonight me has made an executive decision.” She lifted their joined hands slightly, as though formally presenting her ruling. “We’re staying right here.” Her eyes narrowed playfully. “And before you start being responsible, Lieutenant, I would like to remind you that you’re technically off duty.” The teasing came easily, the same affectionate nonsense that had filled their marriage since the beginning. Lenora enjoyed making Jack laugh, especially when he had spent so much of his adult life being the calm, serious person everyone else depended upon. She liked reminding him that he was allowed to be ridiculous with her, even if his particular version of ridiculous generally involved a raised eyebrow and a dry remark delivered with a perfectly straight face. She grew quieter after that, her attention returning to the slow movement of his hand along her back. The familiar contact was soothing, and she found herself thinking about how different their evenings looked now compared with the early years of their relationship. Back then, they had possessed the luxury of assuming their time belonged entirely to them. They could stay out late, spend a whole Sunday doing practically nothing, or decide on a whim to drive somewhere for dinner without accounting for naps, diapers, car seats, or whether a certain three-year-old would eat anything that didn’t resemble a chicken nugget. Lenora wouldn’t trade their present life for those simpler days, but she remembered them fondly. The nights when she’d stay at Jack’s house and wake up without anyone demanding breakfast had seemed ordinary at the time. Now they sounded almost suspiciously luxurious. Her mouth curved as she considered it, and she tilted her head enough to look at him again. “You know what would make tomorrow perfect?” she whispered, clearly preparing to suggest something completely unrealistic. “Sleeping until nine.” She allowed the idea to exist for a moment before laughing quietly at herself. “I know. I know. We have children. I’m familiar with the situation.” She shifted closer, resting her chin lightly against his chest. “But wouldn’t it be nice if Rhett woke up tomorrow and decided he wanted to sleep in? Just once? Maybe Charlie could get involved. They could have some sort of sibling agreement where they let Mommy and Daddy sleep past sunrise.” Her eyebrows rose as though she were genuinely considering the logistics. “Actually, knowing those two, Rhett would probably wake her up to tell her about the agreement.” She shook her head with affectionate resignation. “Never mind. Terrible plan. We’d be awake even earlier.” The thought made her smile, because she could picture their son’s enthusiasm with perfect clarity. Rhett had inherited enough of Jack’s determination to make negotiating with him an increasingly complicated undertaking, although he had apparently acquired Lenora’s talent for talking until everyone around him surrendered. For a little while afterward, she simply lay beside him, listening to his breathing and appreciating the way his arm remained securely around her. She knew how easily their days could disappear beneath responsibility. Jack had the department, she had her coursework and the household routines, and between them were two children whose needs rarely accommodated anyone else’s schedule. There were moments when she missed the spontaneity of being twenty-three, when she could finish a shift at Miller’s Tap and decide that spending the rest of the evening with Jack was the only thing she wanted to accomplish. Yet there was something equally wonderful about being thirty-one and knowing she didn’t have to leave afterward. His house had become their home. Their clothes shared closets and drawers, their schedules overlapped, and their children slept only a short walk down the hallway. She could reach for him in the middle of the night without wondering when she’d see him again. The certainty of that still made her happy in a way she doubted she’d ever be able to explain completely. “I’m really happy,” Lenora admitted after a while, her voice soft enough that the words barely disturbed the quiet. She hadn’t planned to say it, but once the thought settled in her chest, she saw no reason to keep it there. Her hand moved gently over his chest before resting near his heart. “I know I tell you that all the time, but I mean it.” She lifted her head to look at him, a small smile touching her mouth. “Even when I’m complaining about laundry, or Rhett decides he only wants the blue cup even though the blue cup is currently in the dishwasher, or Charlie throws her lunch on the floor because apparently we’re all supposed to know she changed her mind.” Her smile widened briefly at the familiar absurdity of their days before softening again. “I love our life. I love that I get to do all of this with you.” She paused, studying him with the same quiet affection she’d felt for him when they were first dating. “And I love that, after everything we do all day, we still get to come back here and just be us.” She leaned forward and kissed him gently, keeping the gesture unhurried before settling back against his shoulder. There was nothing else she particularly needed to explain. Jack knew how she felt about him, and she knew how he felt about her. Sometimes it was enough simply to say the words and let them exist without turning them into something larger. She tucked herself beneath his arm again, carefully adjusting the blanket near her shoulder as her eyes began to feel heavier. The steady warmth of his body, the faint movement of his breathing, and the soothing rhythm of his hand along her back were combining into a very convincing argument for sleep. Lenora had always found it easier to rest when he was beside her. Not because she was incapable of sleeping alone, but because there was something deeply comforting about reaching for him and finding him exactly where she expected. “Okay,” she whispered after another minute, her voice now carrying the unmistakable softness of someone rapidly losing the battle against exhaustion. “I have one final request.” She tilted her head to look at him, her expression attempting seriousness despite the sleepy smile threatening to give her away. “Please don’t move. I’ve spent eight years perfecting this exact cuddling position, and I really don’t have the energy to start over.” She pressed a small kiss against his shoulder and settled back down, tucking one hand comfortably between them while keeping the other intertwined with his. “And if Rhett wakes up asking about dinosaurs, we’re pretending we don’t know anything about them.” Her mouth twitched. “At least until morning. Then you can be the dinosaur expert again.” Lenora’s smile lingered as she closed her eyes, her cheek resting against the familiar warmth of Jack’s chest. She could still hear the occasional quiet sounds of their home, the faint movement of the curtains near the window and the distant hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen, but nothing required her attention. Rhett and Charlie were sleeping, her husband was beside her, and the responsibilities waiting for morning could remain there a little longer. She gave Jack’s hand one final affectionate squeeze before allowing her fingers to relax against his. She wasn’t quite asleep yet, and she made no effort to pretend otherwise. She simply remained curled against him, comfortable and loved, letting the quiet stretch between them without feeling any need to fill it. |

Jack stayed still for a while after the room quieted, one arm heavy across the mattress and his breathing gradually evening out beneath the faint movement of the curtains. He had never understood the impulse to scramble immediately back into conversation after moments like this, as though silence needed rescuing. Eight years with Lenora had only made him more comfortable letting it exist, especially when the rest of their life contained so much noise by default. His gaze rested on her face in the warm spill of the lamp, taking in the drowsy softness there without needing anything from it. For once, neither of them was watching a clock, listening for bath water or calculating how many minutes remained before somebody needed something.
The towel on the nightstand had been placed there less from foresight than habit, although Jack was willing to accept more credit than he deserved when the opportunity presented itself. The sleepy amusement directed at him earned a quiet huff through his nose as he reached for it. “I like being prepared,” he said, the corner of his mouth lifting. “There are worse character flaws.” He took care of what needed doing without fuss, his touch gentle and matter-of-fact, more concerned with her comfort than making an event out of something they had done together hundreds of times in one form or another. Once the practical part was finished, Jack shifted the pillow back where it belonged and set the towel out of the way. He glanced briefly at the state of the bed and decided there were limits to even his own sense of responsibility tonight. The sheets were rumpled beyond saving by any adjustment short of stripping the mattress, and he had no interest in launching a linen-management project at this hour. “That,” he said, giving the bedding an assessing look, “is tomorrow’s problem.” He sounded entirely comfortable delegating it to a future version of himself. He settled beside her again and felt the familiar ease of her fitting back into the space against him. Jack slipped an arm around her shoulders and let his palm rest flat against her back, tracing no particular pattern while his body gradually came down from the last of its residual energy. The closeness afterward had always mattered to him in a way he had never spent much time analyzing. It simply felt unnatural to share something that intimate with Lenora and then move to opposite sides of the bed like the contact had fulfilled its purpose. He wanted her there because he liked her there, whether they had just made love or were half watching television on a Wednesday night. The affection that followed drew a quieter response from him than most of their teasing had all day. Jack looked down at her, his expression easing into something unguarded, and ran the backs of his fingers once along her upper arm. “I figured it out pretty early,” he murmured. “You weren’t exactly subtle.” The tease was gentle enough not to undermine the answer beneath it, and his mouth pressed briefly to the top of her head. “Lucky for you, neither was I.” The water glass came next because thirst was a predictable consequence of several things they had been doing recently, and Jack had learned long ago that reaching for it before either of them complained saved effort. He held it within easy reach, then took his own drink afterward and set it securely back on the nightstand rather than on the edge where a sleepy elbow could find it at two in the morning. The simple motions returned him completely to himself: glass down, blanket straightened, hand finding hers again almost without thought. “Hydrated,” he said quietly. “Look at us. Thriving.” Her renewed verdict on the sheets amused him enough that he glanced down at them again as though reconsideration might somehow improve their condition. It did not. Jack tightened his arm around her instead, making the decision with his body before bothering to voice it. “I’m exercising discretion,” he said. “Very different from being irresponsible.” There was something satisfying about invoking his professional judgment in defense of remaining nakedly lazy in bed, and his mouth twitched at the absurdity without requiring more commentary. The cold threading in through the cracked window felt good against his face now that the blanket covered the rest of him. Jack shifted it higher along their bodies and kept his hand moving slowly over Lenora’s back, the rhythm becoming less intentional the more relaxed he grew. He could hear almost nothing from the rest of the house beyond the low hum of the refrigerator through the hallway and the occasional settling creak that houses made once everybody stopped moving through them. No small feet. No crying. No mysterious crash followed by an ominous silence. He considered all three absences encouraging. The fantasy of sleeping late made him close his eyes for a second, not because he believed in it but because the mental picture was almost offensively pleasant. Nine in the morning had become less a reasonable waking hour and more an exotic destination since Rhett and Charlie arrived. Jack ran the likely scenario in his head and gave a low, resigned sound. “Nine is basically lunchtime to those two.” His thumb moved over the back of Lenora’s hand. “I could maybe negotiate seven if everyone signs in blood tonight.” He knew even that was optimistic. Rhett had the internal clock of somebody deeply committed to experiencing every available minute of the day, and Charlie generally took her brother’s wakefulness as evidence that she ought to be participating too. The thought of the two of them coordinating deliberately made Jack’s mouth pull to one side. “Actually, no agreements between the children,” he added after a moment. “Nothing good has ever followed those words.” He had seen enough spontaneous sibling collaboration to know that organized cooperation would probably end with furniture displaced and one parent standing barefoot on a toy. The quieter memories underneath that joking did not need much explanation. Jack remembered the years when weekends could dissolve without structure, when there was no reason not to stay out late or drive somewhere simply because Lenora felt like it. He remembered sleeping until nearly noon once and thinking absolutely nothing of it, which now seemed like evidence of a civilization long gone. He did miss the freedom occasionally, but he did not miss it with any particular ache. The life they had now was harder to move around inside, but it was also the one he had wanted without knowing exactly what it would look like. When the conversation turned toward happiness, Jack’s hand stopped for a second before resuming its slow path along her back. He did not immediately answer with something grand enough to match the feeling in her voice, because that had never been how they spoke to each other. His gaze shifted briefly toward the dark doorway, the direction of the rooms where their children slept, then returned to the warm weight tucked against him. “I like our life too,” he said simply. “Even the blue-cup emergencies.” The line of his mouth softened after that, and he let the rest come without dressing it up. “Especially this part.” His fingers tightened gently around hers beneath the blanket. “Not this specifically,” he added after half a beat, because he knew exactly where her mind would take that phrasing and had no intention of handing her such easy material. “I mean knowing everybody’s here. Knowing this is where we end up at the end of the day.” He had once thought permanence would feel heavier than it did. Instead, most of the time it felt like knowing which side of the closet was hers, seeing her shoes beside his at the door, hearing one of the children call from another room and not needing to ask who was going. It was her textbooks mixed with mail on the counter, his uniform in the laundry, car seats, grocery lists, half-finished cups of coffee and the certainty that nobody had to decide when the date was over. Jack had never needed that certainty to become romantic in order to value it. The fact that it was ordinary was precisely what made it reliable. The kiss she gave him afterward left his eyes closed for a beat longer than necessary. When he opened them again, sleep was beginning to pull at the edges of his own attention, though not as strongly as it seemed to be pulling at hers. Jack adjusted his arm beneath her shoulders by a careful inch, finding the position that would keep his shoulder from going numb without disturbing the comfortable arrangement they had apparently spent years engineering. His other hand settled over hers. There was nothing complicated left in him at that point, only the tired satisfaction of a day that had used every part of him and ended well. The final request earned a low chuckle that vibrated through his chest beneath her cheek. Jack immediately abandoned any remaining intention of moving, even though one foot was slightly too warm beneath the blanket and he could already predict the consequences for his left arm. “Fine,” he whispered. “I’ll sacrifice circulation for the integrity of the system.” His fingers gave hers one slow squeeze. “But if I wake up without feeling below the shoulder, I’m filing a complaint.” The dinosaur contingency required even less debate. Jack stared toward the ceiling for a moment as though seriously considering how much paleontological expertise remained available after bedtime. “I know nothing before coffee,” he decided. “Couldn’t tell a dinosaur from a large bird.” That would last approximately until Rhett appeared in the doorway and asked a question with the expectation that Daddy possessed every answer known to science, but Jack saw no reason to admit defeat in advance. He reached carefully toward the bedside lamp with the arm not currently serving as a pillow, stretching just far enough to catch the switch without shifting the rest of himself. The room fell into darkness except for the thin wash of outdoor light near the curtains and the muted glow of the monitor on the nightstand. Jack lay still for a few seconds afterward, letting his eyes adjust while his ears automatically checked the house again. Everything remained quiet. Outside somewhere beyond the window, twelve feet of pumpkin was probably still glowing over the lawn like an orange lighthouse. Jack thought about that for perhaps two seconds before deciding he did not care whether the thing survived until morning as long as nobody woke him to report otherwise. The anchors were sound. The weather was calm. Pumpkin Dad could manage himself for a few hours. Jack’s hand resumed its slow path once along Lenora’s back before coming to rest. Her breathing was beginning to change beside him, settling toward the deeper rhythm he recognized from years of falling asleep together. He did not test whether she was awake or say anything simply because the silence had arrived. There had been enough conversation for one day, enough laughter, enough children, enough touching and teasing and ordinary work. He turned his head slightly toward her hair and pressed one last kiss there, so light it barely disturbed the quiet. “Sleep,” he murmured, the word more fond than instructive. His eyes closed afterward, one hand still linked loosely with hers beneath the blanket and his arm exactly where she had asked him to leave it. If Rhett arrived before sunrise with a dinosaur emergency, Jack would deal with it then. For now, he let the house keep watch over itself. |
