The final remnants of her self-control were a casualty of his war, and Julian was more than happy to oversee the total collapse of her defenses. He felt the tremors wracking her frame, felt the way her inner walls were clamping down on him in a frantic, weeping rhythm, but he wasn't ready to let her slip into the oblivion of a climax just yet. Not until she was broken exactly the way he wanted her.

He pulled back abruptly, the sudden absence of his heat making Isla let out a jagged, protesting cry that was half-sob, half-prayer.

"On your knees, Isla," he rasped, his voice a low, vibrating friction that brooked no argument. "Now."

She didn't hesitate. The "driver" was gone, replaced by a woman who moved on pure, reflexive instinct. She pushed herself up, her limbs shaking with a fine, violent tremor, until she was braced on all fours. Her head hung low, her dark hair a silken curtain that hid her face, but it couldn't hide the flush that had stained her skin from her throat to her thighs.

Julian didn't give her a second to settle. He moved behind her, his large hands reaching around to capture the heavy, pale weight of her breasts. He filled his palms with her, his fingers digging into the soft flesh with a possessive, bruising force that matched the siege below. As he drove back into her with a savage, unrelenting thrust, his thumbs found her nipples, already turgid and sensitive from the winter air.

He didn't just touch them; he claimed them. He caught the tips between his forefinger and thumb, twisting them with a sharp, punishing pressure that sent a lightning bolt of exquisite agony straight to the core he was currently dismantling.

Isla’s back arched into a violent, elegant bow, a high, shattered scream breaking from her lips. The dual sensation—the heavy, rhythmic snap of his hips against her backside and the sharp, grounding sting of his fingers on her breasts—was a sensory overload that threatened to snap her sanity.
"Is this what you wanted?" Julian growled into her ear, his teeth grazing the sensitive shell of it. "To be used like this? To be nothing but a place for me to lose myself?"

He twisted her nipples harder, his pace increasing until the sound of their colliding bodies was a frantic, wet percussion. Every time he slammed home, his fingers tightened their grip, keeping her tethered to the white-hot reality of his hunger. He was reclaiming every inch of her, marking her from the inside out, and he wouldn't stop until she was nothing but a wreckage of pleasure and surrender beneath him.

The sudden withdrawal had been a physical blow, leaving a cold, hollow ache where his heat had been just a second before. But the command that followed—on your knees—was the only thing that could have filled that void. Isla didn't feel used; she felt like a prize being claimed by a conqueror who finally understood the value of the territory. She felt like a queen being handled by the only man strong enough to take her throne.

She moved with a frantic, shivering efficiency, her hands sinking into the mattress as she pushed herself up. The position was the ultimate surrender, exposing the pale, arched curve of her back and the flushed depth of her center to him. Her hair fell in a dark, tangled mess over her eyes, but she didn't need to see. She could feel the predatory weight of his gaze on her, and it made the weeping heat between her thighs throb with a desperate, heavy pulse.

When his hands reached around to capture her breasts, the impact was visceral. He didn't cup them with the gentle reverence of the living room; he gripped them with the bruising, territorial force of a man who owned the very air she breathed. His fingers dug into the soft, white flesh, and when he slammed back into her with a savage, bone-deep thrust, the breath was punched out of her lungs in a high, thin keen.

Then came the sting.

As he caught her nipples between his fingers, twisting them with a sharp, punishing pressure, Isla’s world tilted into a dark, electric kaleidoscope of pain and pleasure. The dual assault was a sensory execution. Every time his hips snapped against her backside with that relentless, wet percussion, his fingers tightened their grip on her peaks, grounding her in a white-hot reality that was becoming too much to bear.

"Yes," she choked out, her forehead pressing into the sheets as her back arched into a violent, elegant bow.

She wasn't just taking it; she was addicted to it. She shifted her knees wider, her fingers clawing deep into the mattress, seeking more of the friction, more of the weight. She wanted to be marked. She wanted to feel the invisible signature of his touch on every nerve ending she possessed. The "poised" Isla was a ghost, replaced by a woman who was whimpering for more of the very thing that was destroying her.

"Do it... harder," she sobbed, her voice a wrecked, unrecognizable rasp.

She began to push back against him, her hips meeting his savage thrusts with a frantic, uncoordinated rhythm of her own. She was chasing the lightning, her body vibrating with the force of a thousand tiny shocks as his thumbs continued to twist and roll her nipples into sensitive, aching points of fire. The sound of her own cries—raw, loud, and entirely uninhibited—echoed in her ears, but she was past caring. She was his. She was a ruin of pure, freakish pleasure, a conquered queen who wanted nothing more than to be dismantled by the marauder until there was nothing left of her but his name on her lips.

Julian’s response was a low, vibrating growl—a sound that was less human and more a primal claim of territory. Her plea for more wasn't just a request; it was the final permission he needed to strip away the last of his restraint. He hauled her back against him by her hips, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of her waist with a bruising intensity that anchored her to the mattress. There was no more hesitation, only the relentless, rhythmic violence of his body meeting hers, a heavy, wet percussion that rattled the very frame of the bed and sent shockwaves through her arched spine.

He met her frantic, uncoordinated retreats with a savage, bottoming-out force, driving into her with the weight of a man who intended to leave a permanent mark. Every time he slammed home, the impact was visceral, a bone-deep collision that turned her world into a blurring haze of white-hot friction. His hands remained locked on her breasts, his thumbs maintaining that callous, electric pressure on her nipples, twisting with a sharp precision that synchronized perfectly with the snap of his hips. He was dismantling her piece by piece, turning the poised queen into a shivering, wrecked extension of his own dark will.

As she pushed back against him, chasing the lightning of her own undoing, Julian leaned over her, his chest a broad, burning weight against her back. His teeth found the sensitive, flushed cord of her neck, biting down with a territorial ferocity that made her cry out in a raw, unrecognizable rasp. He didn't want her just to feel him; he wanted her to be consumed by him. The air in the room felt thick and charged, heavy with the scent of their shared desperation as he accelerated his pace, turning the encounter into a blurring, desperate race toward total annihilation.

"I have you," he hissed against her skin, his voice a jagged edge of possession as he delivered another punishing thrust. He watched the way her fingers clawed into the sheets, the way her body vibrated with the force of a thousand tiny shocks, and he drove deeper still. He was the marauder she had begged for, the only one strong enough to shatter her throne and rebuild her in his own image, and he wouldn't stop until there was nothing left of the woman she used to be—only the girl who belonged entirely to him.

Julian didn't just meet her frantic pace; he overtook it, turning her surrender into a relentless, high-velocity interrogation of her limits. His hands slid from her breasts to her hair, wrapping the dark, tangled silk around his fist and pulling her head back. The angle forced her throat into a vulnerable, straining line and arched her spine until it felt like it might snap under the sheer, kinetic weight of his body. He was devouring her now, his mouth crashing against the pulse point of her neck with a hunger that was cannibalistic in its intensity, sucking and biting at the skin until he had painted her in a map of dark, blooming heat.

Every time he bottomed out, he held the position for a fraction of a second too long, grinding his hips into her with a slow, agonizingly deep pressure that made Isla’s vision swim. The "wet percussion" of their bodies had become a frantic, drowning noise, a rhythmic violence that left her gasping for air she couldn't quite reach. He was a marauder who had finally breached the inner sanctum, and he was intent on burning every bridge behind him. His thumb hooked into the corner of her mouth, pulling her lip down as he watched her eyes roll back, witnessing the exact moment her soul fractured under the weight of his possession.

"Look at me," he commanded, his voice a jagged, gravelly rasp that scraped against her raw nerves. He wanted her to see the predator. He wanted her to witness the man who was currently dismantling her "poised" legacy with every savage, bone-deep thrust.

As the tension in her muscles reached a screaming, electric breaking point, Julian didn't soften. He drove into her with a final, devastating urgency, his fingers digging into her hip bones with a bruising force that would leave the shape of his hands on her skin for days. He was a storm surge, a total eclipse, a man who wasn't just taking her body, but was inhaling her very essence until Isla was nothing but a hollow vessel, filled to the brim with the crushing, beautiful reality of his name.

The roar of the blood in Isla’s ears was so loud it drowned out the very air in the room, leaving her submerged in a sensory vacuum where only Julian existed. She was no longer a woman of stature, no longer a mother or an actress or a composed aristocrat; she had been stripped back to a singular, pulsing nerve ending, entirely dependent on the man currently colonizing her body. The "territorial ferocity" of his teeth against her neck didn't just hurt—it anchored her, providing a sharp, stinging focal point in the middle of a pleasure so vast and dark it threatened to swallow her whole.

As he hauled her back against him, the bruising grip of his fingers on her waist felt like iron manacles. She felt the heavy, rhythmic snap of his hips not just in her center, but in her teeth, her marrow, and the very base of her brain. The "bone-deep collision" was a rhythmic interrogation she had no hope of passing; every time he slammed home, her internal walls clamped around him in a frantic, weeping desperation, trying to hold onto the very force that was destroying her.

When his hand tangled in her hair to wrench her head back, Isla let out a high, thin sound that was closer to a sob than a scream. Her throat was a long, exposed line of pale silk, and she could feel the vibration of his low, jagged rasp against her skin as he claimed her. The sight of his face over her shoulder—dark, focused, and utterly stripped of his usual Swedish reserve—was a visual execution. She saw the marauder she had summoned, and he was more terrifyingly magnificent than she had ever imagined.

"Julian," she choked out, her fingers clawing into the mattress until her nails threatened to snap, her knuckles white and straining. She was vibrating with the force of a thousand electric shocks, her body bowing under the weight of his relentless, high-velocity assault.
The pressure in her belly was no longer a coil; it was a white-hot sun, expanding until it occupied every inch of her torso. She felt the slick, wet friction of their bodies becoming a drowning heat, a localized inferno that turned her sweat into steam. As he ground his hips into her with that slow, agonizingly deep pressure, hitting the very back of her womb, Isla’s vision finally fractured. The bedroom disappeared, replaced by a dark, kaleidoscopic void where only his name remained.

"I’m... yours," she whimpered, the admission torn from her as the first wave of the abyss finally broke over her.

Her muscles seized in a violent, beautiful paralysis. She felt the rhythmic, milking pulses of her own climax begin to hammer against him, a desperate, internal grasping that matched the savage urgency of his thrusts. She was a ruin, a wreckage of pure, freakish surrender, her spine arching so high that only her knees and shoulders touched the bed. The world became a blurring haze of his scent, his weight, and the crushing, absolute reality of his possession.

She was the prize he had fought for, the territory he had occupied, and as he drove into her one final, devastating time, she didn't just break—she disintegrated, scattering her very soul into the dark, hungry steel of the man who had finally made her forget there was ever a border to begin with.

The air in the room had long since burned away, replaced by the ozone of a storm that Julian had no intention of weathering—only commanding. He was no longer the composed architect of his own restraint; the "Swedish reserve" Isla knew had been incinerated, leaving behind a primal, marauding heat that pulsed in time with the white-out agony of his own need.

As he felt her spine arch, a bowstring drawn to the point of snapping, Julian tightened his hold. The "iron manacles" of his grip on her waist weren't merely to hold her steady; they were a claim, a physical manifestation of the fact that in this darkness, she was the only geography that mattered. Every "bone-deep collision" was an answer to a question she hadn’t even realized she was asking, a rhythmic, punishing cadence that sought to reach past the actress and the aristocrat to the raw, weeping center of the woman beneath.

When she whimpered that she was his, the sound hit him like a physical blow. It was the final fracture in his own control.

He didn't just hear the admission; he felt it in the "frantic, internal grasping" of her body as she began to disintegrate. The sensation of her climax—those violent, milking pulses—was a siren song to the predator he had become. His jaw set, a low, jagged growl vibrating in his chest as he met her surrender with a "savage urgency" that bordered on the desperate. He was colonizing her, yes, but he was also drowning in her, his own identity dissolving into the slick, wet friction of their joined skin.

Her "high, thin sob" was the only permission he required for the final assault. With his hand still tangled in the silk of her hair, forcing her to bear witness to the man she had summoned, Julian drove into her with a devastating, final depth. He felt the back of her womb—the very border of her being—and he pushed through it, seeking to anchor his soul into the wreckage he had made of her.

As he spilled himself into her, a "dark, hungry steel" finally finding its sheath, the world didn't just end; it was rewritten. He collapsed against her, a heavy, grounding weight, his face buried in the crook of her neck where his teeth had marked her. He didn't just hold her; he occupied her, waiting for the "kaleidoscopic void" to settle so he could look into her eyes and see the ruins of the woman who was now, irrevocably, his.

The "white-hot sun" in the room didn't fade so much as it imploded, leaving Julian in a heavy, gravity-thick silence. His lungs burned, pulling in the salt-and-silk scent of her as he finally withdrew, the "slick, wet friction" of their bodies parting with a reluctant, tactile ache. The marauder was gone, or perhaps he had simply retreated into the marrow of his bones, leaving behind a man whose limbs felt like lead and whose pulse was a slow, rhythmic thud against the mattress.

He collapsed beside her, the bed groaning under his weight as he rolled onto his back. His chest heaved, a jagged, uneven topography of exertion. The "Swedish reserve" he usually wore like armor was nowhere to be found; his skin was flushed, his hair a damp, chaotic mess against the pillows. For a long moment, he simply stared at the ceiling, his vision still swimming with the "kaleidoscopic void" Isla had just dragged him through.

The silence was absolute, save for the frantic, fading staccato of their breathing.

Julian reached out, his hand trembling slightly—a rare, honest tremor—and found Isla’s hip. His fingers didn't grip her with the "iron manacles" of moments ago; instead, his thumb traced the faint, blossoming heat of the marks he had left on her skin. He felt the "violent, beautiful paralysis" leaving her muscles, replaced by the heavy, boneless exhaustion of a woman who had been thoroughly dismantled.

He turned his head toward her, his dark eyes unfocused but softening. The sight of her—the "long, exposed line of her throat," the way her hair was a dark spill across the sheets—was a quiet execution of a different sort. He had occupied the territory, he had claimed the prize, but in the cooling aftermath, he realized the borders hadn't just vanished for her. He was as much a prisoner of the wreckage as she was.

"Isla," he rasped, his voice a low, gravelly ghost of its usual baritone. He didn't say anything else. He didn't need to. He simply pulled her closer, tucking her head beneath his chin, his body a grounding, protective weight against her "shattered, soul-scattered" frame.

Isla didn’t have the strength to lift a single finger, let alone protest when the heavy, burning weight of his body finally lifted from her back. She lay there, completely unspooled, her cheek still pressed into the damp pillow as the violent aftershocks of her release continued to ripple through her nervous system. She felt entirely liquid—poured out, dismantled, and anchored to the sheets by the sheer magnitude of her own exhaustion. Her lungs burned, expanding and contracting in shallow, ragged gasps that fought to catch up with the frantic thudding of her heart.

When Julian’s hand—trembling with a rare, raw vulnerability that sent a fresh, sharp ache straight to her chest—found her hip, she let out a long, shuddering sigh. His thumb dragged over the sensitive, flushed skin, a profoundly gentle contrast to the warlord who had just occupied it.

As he pulled her in, she went without a fraction of resistance. Her body was completely boneless as he molded her against his side, her head coming to rest naturally in the crook of his shoulder, her cheek pressed flat against the damp, solid expanse of his chest. The steady, heavy rhythm of his pulse beneath her ear was the only thing tethering her to the physical world. She draped one heavy, exhausted arm across his torso, her fingers curling loosely into the sheets on his other side, simply holding on.

For a long time, the only sound in the flat was their synchronized, labored breathing and the faint hum of the record player, which had long since finished its spin. Isla closed her eyes, inhaling the deep, musky scent of their joined bodies, the crisp winter chill from the windows, and the lingering spice of his skin.

Her mind, usually an impenetrable fortress of schedules, dry deflections, and careful architecture, was stunningly, beautifully quiet. The walls had been completely obliterated. And in that terrifying wreckage, a singular truth crystallized with absolute clarity.
She tilted her head just slightly, her swollen lips brushing against the warm, salt-dampened skin over his collarbone. She didn't look up at his face; to meet his pale eyes right now would require a layer of armor she simply no longer possessed.

"You've entirely ruined me, Julian," she whispered, her voice a fragile, raspy thread in the quiet room.

She felt his chest expand as he took a deep breath, his arm tightening protectively around her shoulders, his chin resting heavy against her crown. But she wasn't finished. She flattened her palm against his racing heart, feeling the fierce echo of it vibrating into her own hand.

"I'm supposed to be the sensible one," she murmured, a faint, self-deprecating smile touching her mouth as she pressed another soft kiss to his skin. "I'm supposed to be the one who dictates the terms. But I'm lying here, completely incapable of formulating a single rational thought, let alone moving my legs..."

She swallowed hard, the sheer gravity of the admission tightening her throat. She gripped the fabric of the sheet beside him, bracing herself for the freefall.

"...and the only thing I can seem to focus on," she breathed, her voice dropping to a trembling, vulnerable whisper, "is the rather terrifying realization that I am falling in love with you. And I don't think I possess a single ounce of the discipline required to stop it."

Julian didn’t move. He couldn’t. For a man who had spent his life meticulously controlling every variable, every negotiation, and every person in his orbit, the sheer weight of Isla’s words felt like a physical blow—one that didn't break his ribs, but instead cracked open the hollow space behind them.

The "warlord" was gone, replaced by a man who was suddenly, terrifyingly aware of how much power he had just been handed.

He felt the soft, raspy heat of her breath against his collarbone, the sensation grounding him even as his mind reeled. He had set out to unspool her, to see the fortress crumble, but he hadn't realized that in the process of dismantling her, he had left himself completely undefended. The silence of the room, punctuated only by the dying rhythm of their hearts, felt like a precipice.

His arm, already draped over her, tightened—not with the possessive grip of a conqueror, but with the desperate, grounding hold of a man who had just found something he didn't know he was allowed to keep. He buried his face in the damp silk of her hair, inhaling the scent of her exhaustion and the winter air.

"You think you’re the only one who lost their discipline?" he rasped, his voice sounding foreign even to his own ears—thick, low, and stripped of its usual razor-edged confidence.

He shifted just enough to press his forehead against hers, forcing himself to look at the wreckage they had made of one another. His pale eyes, usually so cool and calculating, were dark with a raw, aching clarity.

"I didn't just want to ruin you, Isla," he confessed, the words dragging out of him like a surrender. "I wanted to be the only thing left standing when the smoke cleared. But looking at you now..."

He let out a sharp, jagged breath, his thumb tracing the line of her swollen lip with a reverence that bordered on pain.

"I’m not falling. I’m already there. I’ve been level with the ground since the moment you looked at me and didn't flinch." He closed his eyes, his voice dropping to a jagged whisper that matched hers. "If you’ve lost your senses, then I’ve lost my soul. And God help us both, because I have absolutely no intention of finding it again."

The admission didn't just hang in the quiet air; it sank directly into her bloodstream. I’m already there.

Isla actually stopped breathing. The fortress she had spent years meticulously reinforcing—the one she used to keep the world, her ex-husband, and her own insecurities at a safe, manageable distance—hadn't just been breached. Julian had walked right through the front gates, knelt in the courtyard, and handed her the keys to his own.

She finally opened her eyes, blinking against a sudden, entirely unfamiliar sting of heat behind her lashes. She tilted her head back against his arm, forcing herself to meet his pale gaze. She had expected to need armor to look at him, to shield herself from the intensity of what they'd just done, but the raw, aching clarity she found in his eyes was completely devastating. It stripped away her last remaining defense: her wit.

Her hand, which had been resting flat over the frantic, echoing thud of his heart, slid slowly upward. Her fingers, trembling with the same rare vulnerability that possessed him, traced the strong, sharp line of his jaw. She felt the rough prickle of his stubble before her thumb came to rest softly against his cheekbone, holding him there.

"Level with the ground," she echoed softly, the words tasting like a permanent vow on her swollen lips.

She let out a wet, breathless sound that was half-laugh, half-sob—a noise that was entirely unlike her usual poised facade, too open, too miraculously unguarded. She shifted closer, ignoring the heavy, pleasant ache in her muscles to bury the remaining fraction of an inch between them.

"Well," she whispered, her voice thick with an emotion that felt dangerously, beautifully permanent. She brushed her nose against his, her dark eyes searching his pale ones before fluttering shut as she surrendered to the absolute gravity of him. "It is a very good thing I have a penchant for ruins, Julian."

She closed the distance, pressing her mouth to his. It wasn't the starving, bruising collision of the marauder and the queen, nor the desperate, territorial claiming from the mattress. It was impossibly gentle, a slow, reverent sealing of terms between two people who had just willingly handed each other the weapons for their own destruction—and trusted the other never to use them.

As she slowly pulled back, a languid, devastated smile touching her lips, Isla froze. The heavy, romantic gravity of the room was suddenly punctured by the distinct, prickling sensation of being watched.

She shifted her gaze just past Julian’s shoulder and blinked.

Sitting perfectly upright on the edge of his mid-century dresser, illuminated by the weak Swedish sunlight, was a massive, silver-grey Norwegian Forest Cat. It had a thick, majestic ruff of fur that made it look like a miniature winter king, and its pale green eyes were locked directly onto Isla. It had evidently emerged from hiding at some point during the carnage, and it was currently staring at them with an expression of absolute, unadulterated feline judgment—as if thoroughly unimpressed by the utter collapse of its owner's dignity.

Isla's breathless smile slowly morphed into a look of dry, incredulous amusement.

"Julian," she murmured, her voice still husky as she lightly tapped his jaw to get his attention. "I don't mean to ruin the moment, but it appears we have an audience. And he looks incredibly disappointed in us."

Julian didn’t even flinch. He didn’t tense, didn’t look away, and certainly didn't offer the intruder so much as a glance. The world outside the perimeter of Isla’s skin had ceased to exist the moment she’d admitted she was falling, and he wasn't about to let a ten-pound ball of fur and judgment pull him back to reality.

Instead, he let out a low, vibrating hum of dissent against her skin—a sound that was more growl than groan.

With a slow, deliberate shift of his weight, he rolled further onto his side, his body following the gravitational pull she exerted on him. He didn't just pull her in; he draped himself over her, his heavy arm hooking firmly around her waist to anchor her against him. He tangled his long legs with hers, a messy, intimate knot of limbs that felt like a permanent claim.

He buried his face in the sensitive curve where her neck met her shoulder, his nose brushing against her pulse point. He inhaled sharply, as if trying to pull the very essence of her into his lungs to replace the oxygen he’d lost.

"Let him judge," Julian rasped, his voice muffled against her skin, vibrating through her entire frame. "He’s a critic by trade. He’ll get over it once I feed him."

He nipped light and playully at the column of her throat, a stark departure from the bruising intensity of an hour ago, before settling into a series of slow, lingering nuzzles. His stubble grazed her flushed skin, a tactile reminder of the friction that had brought them here.

"Don't look at the cat, Isla," he murmured, his breath hot and steady against her ear as he tightened his hold, pulling her so close there wasn't room for a shadow between them, let alone a witness. "Look at me. Or don't look at anything at all. Just stay right here in the wreckage with me."

He pressed a final, heavy kiss to the hollow of her throat, his heart finally beginning to slow its frantic pace, syncing up with the rhythmic, exhausted thrum of hers.

"The sensible version of you can come back tomorrow," he whispered, his eyes drifting shut as he gave in to the sheer, bone-deep lethargy of their shared surrender. "But tonight... tonight you belong to the ruins."

The heavy, deliberate drag of his body over hers felt like a weighted blanket, instantly grounding her scattered senses. When he hooked his arm around her waist and tangled their legs together into a messy, inescapable knot, any remaining tension in Isla’s muscles completely dissolved. She didn't feel trapped; she felt safely, perfectly anchored.

A soft, genuine laugh vibrated deep in her chest at his effortless dismissal of the staring feline. A critic by trade. It was so perfectly Julian—entirely unfazed, his focus narrowed down to a universe that currently only contained the two of them.

When his teeth grazed her throat in a playful nip, a weak, localized shiver ghosted down her spine—a distant echo of the electric storm they had just survived. She turned her head, burying her face into the damp, dark silk of his hair. Her fingers instinctively uncurled from the bedsheets to thread through the locks at the nape of his neck, her nails lightly scraping his scalp in a slow, soothing rhythm.

"The ruins it is, then," she whispered, her breath warm against his temple.

The words settled deep in her chest, filling the hollow spaces she hadn't known she possessed until he had cracked them open.

She didn't look back at the dresser. She let her eyes flutter shut, entirely willing to let the silver-grey critic pass whatever judgment he deemed fit. The sensible, highly-scheduled version of herself felt lifetimes away, a stranger who didn't understand the absolute luxury of being so thoroughly undone by the man holding her.

She tightened her arms around his broad shoulders, holding him just as fiercely as he held her, and let the heavy, bone-deep lethargy pull her down into the quiet dark. For the first time in as long as she could remember, she had nowhere else to be.

---

The heavy, dreamless sleep Isla fell into was unlike anything she had experienced in years. It wasn't the scheduled, efficient rest of a working mother, but a complete, gravitational surrender.

When consciousness finally began to pull her back to the surface, the quality of the light in the bedroom had fundamentally changed. The weak, pale gold of the Swedish afternoon had deepened into the bruised, dusky indigo of early winter twilight, casting long, quiet shadows across the wreckage of the bed.

She didn't open her eyes immediately. She simply lay there, mapping the new, utterly foreign geography of her reality.

She was incredibly warm, cocooned in the center of the mattress, and pleasantly, deeply sore in places she hadn't thought about in a very long time. But the most prominent sensation was the sheer, unyielding weight currently pinning her to the sheets. Julian hadn't moved an inch. His heavy arm was still locked around her waist like a vice, his long legs still impossibly tangled with hers, keeping her securely trapped against the furnace of his chest.

Isla slowly fluttered her eyes open, blinking against the dim light.

Julian’s face was buried in the crook of her neck, his dark hair a messy, sleep-tousled spill against her collarbone. The fierce, marauding warlord who had systematically dismantled her hours earlier was completely gone. In his place was a man who looked breathtakingly peaceful, the harsh, calculating lines of his face smoothed out by exhaustion. His breathing was deep, slow, and rhythmic, a steady puff of warm air against her skin that made her heart execute a quiet, stupid little flutter.

Careful not to dislodge his heavy arm, Isla turned her head slightly. Down at the foot of the bed, curled into a perfect, silver-grey croissant on top of the duvet, was the Norwegian Forest Cat. The critic had apparently decided that if you couldn't beat them, you might as well sleep on them.

A soft, profoundly affectionate smile touched Isla’s lips. She looked back at the man holding her hostage and felt the sheer, terrifying weight of what she had admitted earlier settle into her bones. I am falling in love with you. In the quiet dusk, stripped of the adrenaline and the heat, the truth of it didn't feel terrifying at all. It just felt like fact.
She wasn't in any rush to break the peace, but the quiet rumble of her own stomach gently reminded her that she hadn't eaten since the almonds on the plane.

Shifting a fraction of an inch, Isla freed her right hand from the tangle of the sheets. She brought it up, her cool fingertips lightly brushing the dark, messy strands of hair away from his forehead. He let out a low, sleepy murmur—a heavy vibration against her chest—and instinctively tightened his grip on her waist, pulling her even closer, as if afraid she might try to escape in the dark.

"I'm not going anywhere, darling," she whispered, her voice a husky, gravelly purr in the quiet room.

She didn't try to pull away. Instead, she let her fingertips trace the strong, elegant slope of his nose, dragging down to the rough, dark shadow of stubble along his jawline. She tilted her chin down, pressing a lingering, feather-light kiss to his temple, then another to the sharp curve of his cheekbone.

"Julian," she murmured, her lips brushing the corner of his mouth as she spoke. She traced his lower lip with her thumb, a sweet, coaxing pressure. "Wake up, my magnificent marauder. You promised me food, and I am entirely too weak to hunt for myself."
