For a long moment, she didn’t speak. Her breath hitched, a soft, betraying sound in the quiet kitchen, and her eyes searched his, looking for the punchline, the act, the tell-tale flicker of insincerity. She found none. All she saw was a raw, unguarded honesty that was somehow more disarming than all his practiced charm combined.

A slow smile finally touched her lips, a mirror to his own but laced with a challenge he couldn’t have missed. "My game?" she murmured, her voice a little husky. She finally lifted a hand, not to push him away, but to lay it flat against the solid warmth of his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm. "Bold of you to assume I'd let you win."

His grin didn't falter. If anything, it deepened, his eyes glinting with an emotion she couldn't quite name—something wilder than amusement. He gave a slow, almost imperceptible shake of his head, a silent dismissal of her entire premise. Winning. Losing. The words were irrelevant. His gaze held hers, intense and unwavering, and in their dark depths, she understood. Her challenge wasn't an obstacle; it was the invitation he’d been waiting for.

Without another word, he hooked an arm under her knees and lifted her as if she weighed nothing, setting her on the cool marble of the countertop. The sudden change in height put them perfectly eye to eye. He stepped between her knees, caging her in, his hands coming to rest on the counter on either side of her hips.

The oven beeped its final, defeated cry and then fell silent.
Neither of them noticed.

The world narrowed to the space between them. Ellie could feel the chill of the marble countertop through her jeans, a stark contrast to the radiating heat of his body. He was so close she could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes, see the amusement finally fade into something deeper, hungrier. The air grew thick, heavy with unspoken things. This was it. The tipping point. The moment where the teasing banter and the charged glances finally combusted.

He didn't move, not really. But his thumb left the counter and came to rest on the sliver of skin exposed at her hip, his touch branding her. Every clever retort she’d ever had died on her tongue. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm only he could hear. He was waiting. He had answered her challenge with a definitive, physical statement, and now he was leaving the next move entirely up to her. It was maddening. It was perfect.

Her own hands, which had been braced on the counter behind her, slid forward until her fingers brushed against his shirt. She leaned in, just a fraction, closing the last inch of space between their bodies. The game was over. He’d already won. And the most terrifying part was, so had she. Her voice was barely a whisper when she finally broke the silence.

"Then stop playing."

He kissed her like it was the only thing that ever made sense.

No build-up. No hesitation. Just lips on hers, deep and certain — like he was done talking, done teasing, done pretending that this was anything less than everything. His hand slid to the back of her neck, thumb brushing along her jaw as he tilted her head and kissed her again, slower this time. Indulgent. Full of heat and want and the kind of quiet reverence he’d never admit out loud.

And when he pulled back just enough to breathe her in, eyes dark and voice rough, he didn’t need to say “Are you sure?”
Because she already had.

“Then stop playing.”
Game over.

His grin curved — cocky, sure, but softer around the edges now. Like something unspoken had finally clicked into place. He didn’t ask twice.

His hands slid beneath the hem of her sweatshirt — slow, warm palms against her skin, dragging fire in their wake. And when he pulled it over her head, he didn’t rush. Just let it lift and pool and fall to the kitchen floor with a quiet hush that felt almost sacred.

She was bare beneath it. And fuck —
He took her in like a man starved.

No jokes now. No smug commentary. Just the sound of her breath catching as his gaze dragged over her, equal parts reverent and wrecked. He kissed her again, but this time lower — the corner of her jaw, then her throat, then down the column of her neck.

He took his time.
Mouth warm. Breath hotter.

Hands anchoring her to the counter like if he let go, he’d lose her to gravity or reality or some cruel mix of both. His lips found the dip of her collarbone, tongue flicking teasingly before he sucked gently at the skin just beneath it — a mark, a claim, a promise she’d feel tomorrow when she brushed her fingertips there and remembered this exact moment.

His voice, when it came, was low and rough — the sound of gravel and honey and every unspoken thing he’d been dying to say for years.
“You taste like trouble,” he murmured against her skin, grinning as he dragged his mouth lower, “but I’m not scared of getting burned.”

He kissed the curve of her breast, slow and open-mouthed, then traced the path of her ribs with his hands like he was trying to memorize her by feel. The marble beneath her was cold, but his touch wasn’t. His touch was heat and pressure and pure, focused want.

“You’re mine tonight,” he whispered, lips brushing just above her navel. “Every sarcastic, stubborn, perfect inch.”

He looked up then — eyes meeting hers, pupils blown wide, mouth kiss-bitten and hands still splayed against her hips.

“Tell me when to stop,” he said, and God, even that was cocky — not because he didn’t expect her to, but because he knew she wouldn’t want to.

His mouth mapped a path down her stomach like he had nowhere else to be. Like the clock had stopped ticking and this—her—was the only thing tethering him to the planet.

She tasted like cinnamon and sin and something he hadn’t let himself believe he could have until recently. His hands were everywhere—slow, sure, worshipful—sliding over her thighs, parting them with a quiet ease that made her breath catch all over again. One hand curved behind her knee, anchoring her leg over his shoulder as he dropped to his knees, eyes locked on hers like he was daring her to look away.

“Still think I rehearse this shit in the mirror?” he murmured, voice rough and amused, lips brushing the inside of her thigh. “’Cause I promise you, sweetheart, I don’t need lines when I’ve got you.”

Then he kissed her.
Slow.
Deep.
Like prayer and punishment rolled into one.

The kind of kiss that shattered her composure and rebuilt it in his name. That made her hands scramble for purchase in his hair, her head tip back as a whimper caught in her throat. He was all mouth and tongue and maddening control, every flick and press designed to unravel her completely. And God, he wanted her undone. Wanted to watch her fall apart just for him.

Her moan wrecked him.
Soft. Raw. Like trust cracking wide open.

He pulled back just enough to speak, lips glistening, breath heavy. “I could live right here,” he muttered, kissing just beside where she needed him most, “just tasting how you fall for me.”

And then he went back to it—deeper now, darker, devouring every sound she made like it belonged to him. His name left her lips in fragments, and he smiled into her skin, smug and starving.

By the time her legs were shaking and her grip in his hair turned desperate, Tyler finally pulled back, slow and deliberate, looking up at her like she was the whole damn sky.

Her cheeks were flushed, her chest rising and falling like she couldn’t quite catch her breath. He stood—one smooth, grounded motion—and kissed her again, slow and deep, letting her taste herself on his tongue.

“You’re gonna ruin me,” he whispered against her lips, cocky and reverent in equal measure. “And I’ll thank you for it.”

Then he lifted her off the counter like it was nothing, her legs wrapping around his waist out of instinct more than choice. He was already walking toward the bedroom, voice low against her throat:

“Hope you weren’t saving that cinnamon for tomorrow.”

Because tonight?
He was hers.
And she was dessert.

The kiss wasn't a question; it was a conclusion. The moment her final, challenging words left her lips, his mouth was on hers, and the world simply ceased to exist. It was a kiss that consumed all thought, replacing the sharp edges of their game with a deep, unequivocal heat. Her mind went quiet. When he pulled back only to tilt her head for a second, slower kiss, a shudder worked its way through her entire body. It was the feeling of a final surrender.
His grin, when she saw it again, had lost its bite. It was softer, something private and true, and it made her heart ache in a way his cockiness never could. "Tyler," she breathed, the name a wisp of sound.

A new kind of silence fell between them as his hands found the hem of her sweatshirt. The motion was slow, deliberate. The cool air that hit her bare skin was a shock, but it was nothing compared to the searing heat of his gaze. She felt utterly exposed, laid bare under a look that was no longer teasing but raw with a desperate, unguarded hunger.

His mouth left hers to trace a blistering path down her jaw, her throat. She arched into the touch, her fingers digging into the solid warmth of his shoulders as her pulse hammered against his lips. "Please," she gasped as he anchored her to the counter, the word a plea for him never to stop. When his mouth settled on the delicate skin of her collarbone, the gentle pull of suction sent a possessive thrill coiling deep in her stomach. It felt like a brand, a claim she would carry long after this night was over.

He murmured something against her skin, the words lost in a low vibration that seemed to travel straight to her core. The meaning wasn't in the sound but in the intent she felt in his touch as he continued his exploration. His mouth on her breast was reverent; his hands mapping the curve of her ribs felt like a blind man trying to learn a sacred text. The cold marble at her back was a distant anchor to reality, a reality that was quickly fading against the overwhelming presence of him.

He looked up then, his eyes dark and blown wide, and in them, she saw a silent question. It was a final offering of control, a deference that was more intimate than any touch had been so far. Her answer was not in words, but in the way her body trembled, in the slight, involuntary arch of her back that begged him to continue.

The world began to tilt as his mouth trailed lower. It was a slow, deliberate worship that made her breath catch and hold. His hands were impossibly gentle as they slid down to her thighs, parting them with a reverence that shattered what little composure she had left. When he dropped to his knees before her, his gaze locked with hers, a sob caught in her throat. It was an act of fealty, of utter devotion, that broke her wide open.

He breathed a few rough, amused words against her inner thigh, the sound a ghost of his usual charm, but she couldn't process them. Her entire being was focused on the building storm inside her. And then his mouth was on her, and the storm broke.

Thought ceased. The world dissolved. There was only the dizzying, maddening friction and the clever, devastating work of his tongue. Her hands flew to his hair, not to guide or demand, but to simply hold on as waves of relentless pleasure washed over her. "Oh, God... Ty—" The name was a raw, broken sound torn from her throat. She was unraveling, and he was the only thing holding her together.

Just as she felt herself splintering, he pulled back. A sharp, desperate "No..." escaped her lips before she could stop it. But his mouth was already brushing softly against her, his breath a soothing balm. He murmured praises she couldn't quite hear, his voice a low thrum that gentled her descent. He rose in one fluid motion, and the fierce tenderness in his eyes made her ache. He kissed her, and she tasted the salt and sweetness of her own release on his tongue. "You..." she whispered against his mouth, dazed and unable to form another word.

He whispered a final, broken vow against her lips, a sentiment of beautiful, mutual ruin that settled deep in her bones. Then she was weightless, lifted into his arms as if she were nothing. Her legs wrapped around his waist out of pure instinct, her body clinging to his. As he carried her from the kitchen, his breath was hot against her throat, a silent promise of everything yet to come. The world outside of them, the forgotten dinner, the rules of the game they used to play—none of it mattered anymore.

The journey to the bedroom was a hazy, weightless dream. Ellie felt the world tilt and shift around the solid anchor of him, her head tucked into the curve of his neck. The steady, powerful beat of his heart against her cheek was the only rhythm that mattered. She felt the muscles in his arms and back contract with each step, a testament to the effortless strength with which he carried her. They left the cool tile of the kitchen and the world softened as they moved down the carpeted hallway, the air growing warmer, more intimate.

He didn't put her down on the bed, but next to it, setting her on her feet with a reverence that made her knees weak all over again. The soft rug cushioned the landing, a gentle return to earth. He was still caged around her, his hands resting on her hips, his body a wall of heat in the dim, moonlit room. He started to lean in, his expression still a mix of raw hunger and that fierce tenderness that wrecked her.

But this time, something shifted inside her. The last vestiges of the game were gone, burned away in the kitchen, and in its place was a clarity that was sharp and immediate. The surrender had been a release, and now she was free. Free to not just want, but to take.

Her hands came up, not to his hair in a desperate cling, but to his chest, pressing flat against the solid muscle. It was a gentle but firm gesture, a silent pause. He stopped, his eyes questioning hers in the dark. In response, a slow, determined smile touched her lips. It was her turn.

With her gaze locked on his, she slid her hands down to the hem of his t-shirt. He didn't move, his body held in a state of suspended anticipation. She hooked her fingers in the soft cotton and began to pull it upward, slowly, deliberately. She watched his stomach tense as the fabric dragged over his skin, revealing him inch by inch. When she reached his head, he lifted his arms without being asked, a willing participant in her newfound control.

She pulled the shirt over his head and let it fall to the floor beside her own. For a long moment, she just looked at him, her hands hovering in the space between them before coming to rest on his bare shoulders. Her palms were hot against his skin. She could feel the faint tremor that ran through him under her touch.

A slow, genuine grin—completely devoid of his usual cockiness—spread across his face. He was watching her, utterly captivated, waiting for her next move.
Leaning forward, she pressed a soft, deliberate kiss to his mouth before pulling back. Then, with her hands still on his shoulders, she applied a gentle, steady pressure, urging him backward until the backs of his knees hit the edge of the mattress and he sat, looking up at her. The game was over. A new one was just beginning. And this time, Ellie was making the rules.

She didn’t push him.
She placed him.

And God, that did something to him.

Tyler let himself sink onto the edge of the bed with a quiet, breathless laugh, head tilted up, curls a little wild, cheeks flushed from heat and hunger and her. His hands flexed once against the comforter like he needed to hold on—because Ellie, barefoot and bare-shouldered in front of him, was something else entirely.

Not just beautiful.
Not just sexy.

She was dangerous.

And he wanted nothing more than to hand her the match and let her burn him down.

“Christ, look at you,” he muttered, voice low and reverent. “You’re gonna kill me.”

He said it like a prayer.
Like a promise.

Then she was straddling him.

And it wasn’t desperate. It wasn’t messy. It was intentional. Like she knew exactly what she was doing—what power she held with every slow shift of her hips, every deliberate drag of her hands down his chest.

His breath punched out of him when her mouth found his neck, soft and sinful, teeth grazing over his pulse point. He hissed between his teeth, hands gripping her waist like she might float away if he didn’t anchor her. She was everywhere and everything, and for a second, he couldn’t remember a damn thing about his name or his past or his rules.

Just this.

Just her.

“I swear to God,” he ground out against her ear, “if you keep looking at me like that, I’m not gonna last.”

Her smile was wicked. Knowing.
And still somehow the sweetest thing he’d ever seen.

His mouth crashed into hers again, this kiss dirtier than the first, all tongue and teeth and desperation, like the space between them had become unbearable. His hands slid down her back, one cupping the nape of her neck, the other finding the curve of her ass with the kind of reverence that said mine without a word.

And then, low against her mouth, he whispered—

“Say stop, and I’ll stop. But if you don’t—”
He kissed her again.
Deeper.
Slower.
“—I’m not holding back anymore.”

Because this wasn’t a game.
Not anymore.

This was a goddamn reckoning.
And Tyler Harrison?
Was ready to be ruined.

A hum of pure, potent control vibrated through her. She stood before him on the soft bedroom rug, her feet sinking into the plush fibers. She was completely exposed to his gaze, and the vulnerability was its own kind of power. She watched the change in him as he sat on the edge of the bed—the wonder that replaced his confidence, the way his breath hitched as he took her in.

It was this raw, unguarded awe that pulled her forward. An overwhelming need to close the distance, to consume and be consumed, guided her movements. She moved to straddle his lap, the heat from his body a shock against her skin. The sheer intimacy of the position, the direct contact, sent a jolt of pure sensation through her. His hands clamped onto her bare waist, a grounding, skin-on-skin pressure as she found her balance.

She lowered her head, the scent of him—musk and clean soap—filling her senses. She felt the frantic, rabbit-fast beat of his pulse against her lips and, on pure instinct, nipped at it. A raw, guttural sound vibrated from his bare chest straight through her teeth, and the feedback of his pleasure sent a fresh wave of heat through her. He was hers in this moment.

His ragged breathing was a harsh sound against her ear, a confession of his unraveling. It was the only signal she needed.

The next kiss was a bruising collision. There was no finesse, just a raw, clashing hunger that stole her breath and left her dizzy. It wasn't about control anymore; it was about survival, about two people trying to merge into one. She felt his hands move over her, a searing exploration of skin and curves, one tangling in her hair, the other on her lower back, pulling her impossibly closer.

He broke away, his forehead pressed to hers. She could feel the tremor running through his body, see the darkness in his eyes. He didn't speak, but his intent was a palpable force in the room. The kiss he gave her then was different—a deep, searing brand that sealed an unspoken contract

All the power she had claimed, all the control she had wielded, coalesced into a single, sharp point of desire. She met his silent promise with a fierce, immediate need of her own. When his lips left hers, she chased them, her voice a low, fierce command.

"Don't you stop," she breathed, her words a vow, not a plea. "You don't ever stop."

He didn’t move right away.
Didn’t speak.
Just stared up at her like she was the last thing he’d ever pray to.
Because maybe she was.

His hands stayed locked on her waist like he didn’t trust himself to let go.
And honestly? He didn’t.

The way she felt straddling him—bare, bold, burning hot against every inch of him—it took everything in him not to flip her over and wreck her right there. But this? This was better. Because for the first time, he wasn’t chasing. He was being chosen. And it leveled him.

His mouth brushed her jaw, his voice rough and reverent against her skin.

“Fuck, Ellie…”

Then, slowly, still under her, he shifted—leaned back just enough to slide his hands down her thighs, gripping as he moved. His breath caught when her hips rolled with him, chasing friction even now. It was damn near impossible to focus, but he managed—keeping her anchored against him as he hooked his thumbs in the waistband of his jeans.

One movement.
Then another.

He worked them down without breaking the connection, and when he slid his boxers off too—still under her, still in her hands—the growl that left him was raw enough to sting the air. Now there was nothing between them. Nothing at all.

His head fell back for just a second.
A beat of surrender.
Then he looked up at her with a crooked, dangerous grin.

“You keep giving orders like that,” he murmured, fingers ghosting up her spine, “I’m gonna start thinking you want me desperate.”

She leaned in, about to snap back, and that’s when he caught her wrist—just gently, just playfully—and dragged her hand down until it wrapped around him.

“Careful,” he warned, his breath hitching. “You’re gonna make me beg.”

And still, he didn’t give in.

He let the tension build—rocked his hips just enough to tease, not enough to give. His mouth found the edge of her collarbone again, hot and open, his tongue dragging slowly along her skin before he bit, not hard, just enough to make her gasp.

“Go on, then,” he murmured. “Tell me what you want. One more time. Just once more.”

But she didn’t.
Wouldn’t.
Didn’t have to.

Because the look in her eyes—dark, dilated, and all his—said everything.

Tyler grinned like the devil, kissed her hard, and growled into her mouth:

“Didn’t think so.”

And then he gave in.

No more teasing. No more restraint.
Just the kind of ache that comes with knowing you’ve never wanted anyone like this—never needed anyone like this.

And as her name fell from his lips like a curse, like a promise, he knew one thing with absolute certainty—

He’d never stop.

Not tonight.
Not ever.

Her body moved like a song he didn’t know the words to but somehow already loved.
Every shift of her hips was a new verse.
Every arch of her spine, a chorus.
And Tyler? He was gone.

The second she sank down on him, his breath tore out of his lungs like it had no business staying.
No teasing this time.
No waiting.
Just the slick, hot, impossible glide of her around him — tight and perfect and all his.

His head snapped back, eyes screwed shut as a sound tore from deep in his chest. She was everywhere — wrapped around him, pressing down, pulling him deeper with every roll of her hips. His fingers dug into her thighs first, hard enough to leave bruises he hoped she'd see in the mirror later. Then they slid up — greedy and reverent — chasing every curve, every tremble, every slick heat-soaked inch of her.

She moved like sin.
Like salvation.
Like she'd never been told how not to ruin a man.

Her hands braced on his chest, fingernails dragging just enough to make him twitch beneath her. His abs flexed beneath her palms with every grind, every pulse of her tightening around him. She set the pace — slow at first, cruel in its precision — a steady rhythm that stole his sanity in pieces. Then she picked it up, chasing something with a kind of wild, untamed hunger that nearly buckled him from the inside out.

His hands slid to her waist, then her back, then up into her hair — fingers tangling like he couldn’t decide whether to hold her still or pull her closer.
She was too much.
Not enough.
Perfect.

Sweat beaded at the base of his throat, between his shoulder blades, along the sharp lines of his hips as he bucked up into her.
Once.
Twice.
Again.

Meeting her rhythm. Matching her fire.
Letting her take him apart piece by fucking piece.

She leaned in, and the world tilted.
Her chest brushed his. Her mouth ghosted along his neck, her breath hot and uneven.
Every time she clenched around him, his vision blurred at the edges.

His hands slipped down again — one on her ass, the other flat between her shoulder blades — anchoring them together as her hips stuttered. Her body started to shake. He felt it before he saw it, before he heard the small, broken gasp she didn’t even mean to let out.

And still, she moved.

Pushing him closer to the edge with every grind, every clench, every wild, breathtaking wave of her body over his.

His grip tightened.
His control slipped.
He was right there, right fucking there—

But he didn’t let go.
Not yet.
Not when she was still unraveling above him, still dragging him through every pulse of her pleasure like she owned him.

Because she did.

The rhythm slowed but didn’t stop, every glide deeper, heavier. His jaw clenched. Muscles tensed. Sweat slicked across their skin. Every nerve ending screamed for more and he gave it — all of it — holding her tight, grounding her, losing himself in the maddening ache of staying just this side of losing it.

It was torture.
It was bliss.
It was her.

And she was still moving.

The world was a blur of pure sensation, a suspended moment of exquisite torture. Every slow, deliberate glide was both heaven and hell, pulling her closer to an edge she ached to fall from. She was lost in the rhythm he dictated, her body moving with a will of its own, her voice a broken whisper against his shoulder. "Oh, God, please..."

Just when she thought she could take no more, she felt the slightly rough calluses of his palm slide from the soft skin of her hip, a deliberate, trailing heat that mapped a path to her center. The pressure of his thumb when it found her was not demanding, but sure and knowing—a perfect, devastating shock to her system.
That was it.

The world shattered. A silent scream of light exploded behind her eyes, and her back arched violently, lifting her off him. "TYLER!" His name was a raw, broken cry torn from her throat as every muscle in her body clenched around him in one, powerful, involuntary wave.

The feeling of her release was his undoing. She felt it trigger his own, a deep, guttural groan vibrating through his chest as he went rigid beneath her. His hands, which had been stroking her, suddenly clamped down on her hips, his fingers digging in with a desperate, bruising force that wasn't about control but about pure, reflexive need as he came apart.

The storm broke. As the last of his shudders wracked his frame, the punishing grip on her hips gentled, though he didn't let go. His fingers uncurled, and his palms smoothed over the skin he’d just held so tightly, a silent, soothing apology. All her strength vanished. "Oh..." she breathed, the sound one of utter depletion as she collapsed forward, boneless and trembling, her forehead coming to rest in the damp hollow of his shoulder. The only sounds in the room were their harsh, ragged breaths and the frantic, mismatched rhythm of their hearts hammering against each other.

His arms enveloped her, one hand spreading wide and warm across the expanse of her lower back, holding her securely against him. The other came up, his fingers, now slow and gentle, threading through the damp strands of hair at her nape. She felt the gentle scrape of his short nails against her scalp as he stroked her hair, a hypnotic, calming motion that chased away the last of the frantic energy.

"Don't stop," she murmured into his skin, the plea no longer for passion, but for this. For the quiet, grounding claim in the peaceful aftermath. He answered by pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her temple.

She was still trembling.

Tyler could feel it in every inch of her—small, shuddering aftershocks that rippled through her limbs like her body hadn’t yet gotten the message that it was safe now. That it could let go.

He didn’t move.

Didn’t dare.

Not while she was folded over him like that—boneless, wrecked, clinging to the space between his shoulder and neck like it was the only solid thing left in the world.

God, he hoped it was.

His arms stayed locked around her, not in possession, but in protection. One hand stroked her spine in slow, anchoring passes, tracing down the curve of her back, then back up to cradle her again. The other was buried in her hair, fingers sifting through sweat-damp strands like he was trying to memorize their texture, like letting go might make this whole thing disappear.

She murmured something into his skin—soft, wrecked, honest.

Don’t stop.

Not a command. A confession.

And fuck if it didn’t land harder than any moan, any cry of his name.

He didn’t answer with words. Didn’t need to. His lips pressed to her temple instead, slow and reverent, lingering longer than necessary. Then again, everything about this was more than necessary. It was instinct. It was survival.

He shifted slightly, just enough to slide them further onto the bed without dislodging her. The sheets were cool against his back, the air still thick with heat and sweat and her—Christ, her—and none of it felt real yet.

She was still on top of him, curled into his chest, the weight of her a grounding, impossible comfort. He felt her breath against his neck—uneven at first, then slowly evening out. Every exhale that ghosted over his skin settled deeper into his bones.

He could still feel the imprint of her fingernails on his chest. The bruises blooming on his hips. The echo of her body wrapped around his like she’d been made for him. And somehow, the wreckage she’d left behind wasn’t chaos.

It was peace.

A slow, crooked smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. Not smug. Not cocky. Something softer. Something real.

He didn’t say it. Not yet.

But he thought it—clear as day.

You’re it, Ellie.

And as his hand settled again at her back, palm spanning the small of it like it had every right to be there, he pulled her in tighter and let the quiet settle over them. No more heat. No more teasing.

Just her, breathing him in.
Just him, anchoring them both.

Still wrapped in everything they hadn’t said—
and everything that no longer needed to be.

Rain traced lazy paths down the window, each droplet catching the muted gold light that spilled through the curtains. Outside, Main Street was slick and gleaming — wet leaves plastered to the pavement, pumpkins lined up outside the florist, a stack of hay barrels near the lamppost where the town would hang garlands later in the week.

Inside, her apartment smelled like cinnamon, coffee, and the faint, lingering sweetness of last night’s candle.

Ellie tugged the blanket tighter around herself and leaned back into the couch. Tyler was half-sprawled beside her, legs stretched out, still wearing that sleepy, content expression that always managed to undo her a little. His hand rested against her knee, his thumb tracing lazy circles through the fabric of her leggings.

The whole place glowed with the warm, amber light she loved. Her Halloween decorations — pumpkins, string lights, a small cauldron of candy — made the room look like it belonged to some cozy movie about small towns and happy endings. She’d never admit it aloud, but she liked that. She liked knowing she’d built this version of her life and that he was sitting right in the middle of it.

Her mug sat cooling on the table, the little ghost painted on the side smiling up at her. She looked at him for a second — at the curve of his jaw, the quiet steadiness of his breathing — then nudged him gently with her foot.

“Hey,” she said softly.

He turned his head toward her, one brow lifting.

“Wanna watch a movie?” she asked, voice still thick with the slow calm of the morning. “Something fall-y. Cozy. No explosions.”

He smiled — that small, knowing kind of smile that told her he’d agree to just about anything she suggested.

“I could make popcorn,” she offered. “And we still have that candy I bought for the trick-or-treaters.”

She grinned before he could answer, already anticipating his reaction. “Which, technically, we should probably taste test. Y’know, quality control.”

He shook his head, amusement flickering in his eyes, but didn’t move.

“Come on,” she said, laughing under her breath. “You can’t tell me you’re strong enough to resist those little pumpkin-shaped chocolates. They’re practically begging to be eaten.”

She stood, dragging the blanket around her shoulders like a cape, and padded toward the kitchen. The sound of rain softened behind her, replaced by the faint rustle of candy bags and the hum of the stove as she poured kernels into the pan.

The smell of butter and sugar began to fill the air, mixing with cinnamon and coffee — warm, sweet, home.

She could hear him moving in the living room, adjusting the pillows, flipping through channels until he found something old and familiar. By the time she came back with the bowl of popcorn and a handful of candy, he was settled comfortably on the couch again, waiting for her with that quiet, expectant look that made her heart ache in the best way.

She set the bowl down on the coffee table and sank beside him, tucking herself under his arm as the blanket fell over both of them. The first notes of the movie’s opening music filled the room.

“What are we watching?” she asked, glancing at the screen as she grabbed a piece of candy.

He didn’t answer right away — just smiled at her the way he always did when words weren’t really necessary.

She smiled back, her voice soft but certain. “I don’t even care. This is perfect.”

Outside, the rain kept falling — slow and steady — the sound wrapping around the apartment like a promise.

She rested her head against his shoulder, the popcorn bowl balanced between them, and let the rest of the world blur into golden light and laughter.

“This,” she said quietly, “is officially my favorite kind of day.”
.
And she meant it — every word, every heartbeat, every slow, content breath of it

Tyler didn’t say anything at first.

Didn’t have to.

He just breathed her in — the scent of cinnamon, popcorn butter, and whatever it was that lived in her skin and sweaters — and let the moment settle into him like warmth by a fire.

He’d always been more of a winter guy. Not because of hockey — though yeah, the rink was home — but because he liked the stillness of it. The quiet. The way snow blanketed everything and made the world hush for a little while. But fall with her? Damn. That was its own kind of magic.

He glanced down at the way she curled into him — that familiar, easy way she fit like she’d always belonged there — and smiled without meaning to.

Her hair brushed his jaw. The blanket was half slipping from her shoulder and he tugged it back up before it could fall, thumb brushing her arm in a lazy pass. He didn’t want her cold. Didn’t want the moment to shift or scatter.

The soft glow from the movie flickered across the room — something with too many plaid scarves and a predictable plot — and he didn’t care. She could’ve put on paint drying and he would’ve watched it, so long as she kept her head right there and the world kept smelling like caramel and clove.

He looked over at the candy she’d dumped onto the table, an unholy mix of chocolates, gummies, and neon wrappers scattered like confetti. He smirked and reached for one — the little pumpkin she’d raved about. Unwrapped it slowly, then popped it in his mouth without ceremony.

“She’s right,” he muttered around it. “Ridiculously good. Kinda makes me suspicious. Like… what did they put in this to make it taste like actual witchcraft?”

He leaned his head against hers, eyes still on the screen but his focus drifting.

“I used to think mornings like this were boring,” he said after a beat, voice low. “All the quiet, the domestic stuff. I didn’t get it.”

His thumb kept tracing circles against her arm, slower now, like the rhythm itself meant something.

“But now? I could sit here for the next hundred hours and not move once. As long as you’re here. Blanket, popcorn, terrible fall movie and all.”

He pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, soft and lingering.

“You’ve officially ruined me, Ellie Tate,” he murmured, smiling into her hair. “Guess I’m okay with that.”

The movie kept playing. Outside, the rain drummed soft against the windows, steady as a heartbeat. Inside, wrapped in her blanket and her warmth, Tyler Harrison let himself fall a little deeper.

And didn’t bother catching himself.
