Tyler was losing.

Losing in the most delicious, utterly doomed kind of way.

Because Ellie Tate wasn’t flirting anymore. She was feasting. On chocolate. On the moment. On him.

And he knew that look in her eye. He’d seen it before—years ago, across locker-lined hallways and the tops of cafeteria tables. But back then, it was softer. Shyer. Dipped in maybe and wrapped in caution.

Now?

Now it was full-blown wildfire in heels.

And yeah, she was winning.

But Tyler Harrison had no intention of staying down.

He leaned back just enough to give her the illusion of control, tongue pressed to the inside of his cheek, curls falling in front of his eyes as he stared at her like she was the seven deadly sins wrapped in red wine and candlelight.

“Sweetheart,” he drawled, voice warm honey and coastal rasp, “if you think this is me losing, wait 'til you see what I do when I win.”

He tilted his head, just slightly, grin ticking up slow.

“You wanna end up in my lap? Babe, I’ll pull the chair out myself.”

Then he leaned forward again, elbow on the table, fingers brushing hers with that faux-casual grace he’d spent his whole life pretending wasn’t practiced.

“But let’s get one thing straight.”

His eyes flicked down to her lips, lingered.

“You will end up in my lap. Not because you lost,” he murmured, “but because I’ll make you wanna surrender.”

He plucked the spoon from her hand—not rushed, not aggressive. Just a quiet claim.

Then scooped a bit of brownie. Held it up.

But this time, he didn’t feed her.

This time, he took the bite himself.

Let it melt slow. Watched her watch him.

And when he licked the corner of his mouth, eyes locked on hers, he saw the moment she cracked—just a little.

“Mm,” he hummed, lips curving. “Yeah, I think you’re right. I do taste better.”

A beat.

Then, softer—lower. The kind of voice that wrapped around her spine and stayed there.

“You’re not the only one who’s been dreaming of this, Ellie.”

He leaned in just enough that their knees bumped again, that her breath hitched in the way he felt more than heard.

“But keep playing, baby. Keep teasing. Because when I get you home?”

He grinned, wide and dangerous and absolutely hers.

“I’m not stopping at four bites.”

Ellie’s breath caught—but she didn’t back down.

Oh no.

She blinked once, slow and deliberate, like a lioness deciding whether the antelope was worth chasing when she was already full. And judging by the glint in her eye, she’d just decided she was starving.

He wanted to play?

Fine.

She was done pretending this wasn’t her favorite kind of foreplay.

With slow precision, she dragged her chair half an inch closer. Not enough to seem desperate. Just enough for the toe of her shoe to nudge between his boots, sharp heel grazing his ankle like a warning wrapped in silk.

“I surrender when I say,” she murmured, lips brushing the rim of her water glass like it might scald. “And let’s be honest, baby—”

She paused, tilted her head. Let her eyes dip to his mouth.

“—you want me to fight back.”

The air between them felt like it had teeth now—like it might bite if either of them blinked first. But Ellie didn’t flinch. She leaned in. Elbows on the table, hand dragging toward his like she was about to make good on every threat.

“And I saw that spoon trick,” she added, tone sweet as sugar but dipped in arsenic. “That was your move?”

She tsked.

“Cute. But if you’re trying to make me crack…”

Her gaze dropped to his mouth again, lingered like a slow-burn fuse.

“You better bring more than melted chocolate and that panty-melting smirk.”

She took the last spoonful of brownie with a flick of her wrist—graceful, smug, lethal.

Then fed herself—moaning just loud enough to make the couple two tables over look up.

She didn’t care.

This was war.

And Tyler Harrison?

Was going down.

“I’ve had dreams,” she said, licking the tip of the spoon with a smile that could cut bone. “But none of them ended with you in control.”

Then she set the spoon down.

Folded her hands in her lap.

And smiled—sweet, smug, devastating.

“Let me know when you’re ready to stop bluffing and start proving it.”

Because Ellie Tate wasn’t just playing the game anymore.

She was the game.

And darling, Tyler had already lost.

Tyler didn’t move.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t even try to hide the slow, dangerous curve of his mouth as Ellie Tate delivered her verbal death sentence like she was sipping rosé in the French Riviera and not casually ruining his life in a restaurant off Main.

His jaw ticked once—tight. Controlled.

Barely.

Because that little spoon stunt? That was supposed to be his win. His checkmate. His remember who you’re dealing with, sweetheart moment.

But no.

No—she had to go and make a whole damn scene out of it. A performance. A slow-burn striptease of eye contact and molten chocolate and a smirk that had his entire blood supply making tactical decisions he did not authorize.

And that last line?

Yeah, that was the one.

That was the one that made something hot and primal coil low in his stomach and say, Cool. Bet.

His voice, when he finally spoke, was honey-thick and soaked in sin.

“You sure you wanna bluff talk with me, sweetheart?” he murmured, fingers toying with the edge of his napkin like he was imagining it was the hem of her dress. “Because I play for keeps.”

His gaze dropped—trailing her lips, her collarbone, the devil in her smile—and then dragged back up like he was memorizing the battlefield before he burned it.

“You think I lost,” he added, lower now. “But all you’ve done is guarantee I’m gonna spend the rest of the night proving you wrong. Slowly. Repeatedly. In high definition.”

His boot nudged hers under the table—casual, claiming, not so much a touch as a promise.

“And when you’re in bed later?” he continued, voice all velvet warning and lover’s vow. “Breathless, hair a mess, begging me to admit you won?”

He leaned in—just a little—close enough that only she could hear it.

“I’ll lie through my teeth, Ellie Tate. And you’ll let me.”

A beat.

Then he reclined back, slow and smug, stealing the last of her water like a man who feared nothing.

Except, maybe, her.

And loving every second of it.

Ellie didn’t flinch.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t even pretend to look away.

She let the words hit—let them curl around her spine like smoke, let them slide under her skin like silk dipped in gasoline. And then?

She smiled.

Slow. Dangerous. The kind of smile that started sweet and ended with a knife between the ribs.

Because Tyler Harrison thought he was playing for keeps?

Please.

She’d been sharpening her teeth on him since junior year.

Her voice came soft—deceptively soft—as she reached across the table and dragged one perfectly manicured fingernail down the outside of his wrist.

“You think I’m scared of high definition, baby?” she murmured, tilting her head just enough to let her hair fall over one shoulder. “I invented the director’s cut.”

Then—slowly—she leaned forward. Just far enough that the candlelight caught the shimmer at her collarbone and turned her into a goddamn problem.

“You can lie to me all you want,” she whispered. “Hell, I like when you lie. You get this little glint in your eye like you know exactly how wrecked you’re about to be.”

She smiled—small, wicked, private.

“And you’re right.”

Her foot brushed up his calf, slow and deliberate.

“I will let you.”

Then she sat back, let her hand trail away from his like it cost her nothing, like she hadn’t just declared war with nothing but a whisper and a smirk.

“But you better make it worth it, Harrison,” she added sweetly, sipping her water like it was wine. “Because if you’re gonna go down in flames, you don’t half-burn the house.”

Her eyes glittered. Full of challenge. Full of hunger.

“I want scorched earth.”

And maybe her voice was soft, maybe her dress was floral, maybe her laugh still sounded like Sunday morning cartoons and cinnamon toast.

But make no mistake.

Ellie Tate was a goddamn firestorm in heels.

And tonight?

She was done playing nice.

Tyler’s pulse thumped in his throat.

Hard.

Because Goddamn.

Ellie Tate had just set the room on fire without lifting her voice, and he was sitting in the center of it like a man who wanted to burn. Hell, he’d bring the gasoline himself.

He didn’t speak right away.

Couldn’t.

Not when she was looking at him like that—like she already had the blueprint for his undoing tucked behind her smile and was just waiting for him to ask nicely.

That fingernail down his wrist? That wasn’t a flirt.

That was a threat dressed in roses.

And her voice—low, laced with smoke and promise—had short-circuited half his brain and redirected the other half to very non-public fantasies involving scorched sheets and her name in every key his mouth could find.

He exhaled, jaw flexing, the smirk pulling at his lips more instinct than choice.

“You want scorched earth?” he said, voice low and wrecked with heat. “Babe, I am the wildfire.”

He leaned forward, slow and deliberate, forearms braced on the table like he was about to pray. But it wasn’t God he was worshiping.

It was her.

That wicked mouth. That collarbone shimmer. That holy, sinful look in her eyes that said come on, then.

“You think I don’t know how dangerous you are?” he murmured. “I’ve seen hurricanes with less edge.”

He let his knuckles brush hers on the table. Barely there. A spark of contact meant to haunt.

“And I’m not scared of getting wrecked, Ellie. Not if it’s you doing the wrecking.”

Then—just to twist the knife he knew she secretly loved—he let his voice drop even lower, softer, right at her ear:

“But you better start stretching now, sweetheart. Because when I get you alone? I’m not stopping until you forget your name and remember mine.”

He pulled back just enough to meet her gaze full-on.

A beat.

Then another.

And then, like the cocky bastard he was, he popped a bite of brownie into his mouth and moaned loud enough for the waiter to look over.

Chewed slow.

Swallowed.

Licked a smear of chocolate off his thumb with eyes locked on hers.

“Scorched earth,” he repeated, voice velvet and sin.

“Game on, Tate.”

Ellie’s breath caught—but she didn’t show it.

Not on the outside.

Not when he was already looking at her like that, like she was the last girl standing and the prize he was dying to lose to. Not when every word he said came wrapped in heat and cockiness and the kind of promise that made her thighs press together beneath the table.

Her smile was sugarcoated steel when she reached for her water, slow and deliberate, the glass kissing her lips like it wished it were him. She let the silence stretch. Let the tension coil tighter. Let him wait.

Then—finally—she leaned in.

Not much. Just enough.

Just enough for her voice to slide across the table like a red silk ribbon and wrap around his throat.

“Oh, I’ll remember your name,” she whispered, lips barely moving. “I’ll sing it.”

A beat.

Her fingers brushed the edge of the table, lazy, lethal.

“But only if you earn it.”

And God, she meant it.

Because this wasn’t some high school fantasy anymore. This was grown. This was real. This was her choosing him with open eyes and both hands, knowing full well he could ruin her—

—and trusting him not to.

She dragged her gaze over him, slow and unapologetic, like she was picking out the exact way she wanted him to fall apart.

“You keep talking like that,” she added, “and I’m not gonna wait for the check.”

Her smile turned wicked.

“I’ll tip the waiter myself and drag your wildfire ass out of here.”

She sat back then, prim and composed—like her heartbeat wasn’t playing a drumline behind her ribs, like she didn’t feel the heat of him even from across the table.

And then, with the kind of grace that only came from knowing she’d already won, Ellie Tate took the last bite of molten brownie from his plate, slow and teasing, never breaking eye contact.

Licked the spoon clean.

And whispered, “Game on, Harrison.”

Tyler didn’t flinch.

Didn’t blink.

Didn’t smirk this time either.

Because whatever fire they’d been playing with before? Ellie Tate just turned it into a full-blown inferno—and he was done pretending he wasn’t already halfway scorched.

She took that last bite like a queen claiming the crown. Licked the spoon like a promise. Looked him dead in the eye like she already knew how the night would end—and that he’d be the one breathless, begging, half-dressed and fully wrecked.

So he didn’t play back.

Didn’t toss another line or drag out the flirt.

He just sat there for one slow heartbeat—one long, loaded breath—watching her like she was both the storm and the sanctuary.

Then he leaned back in his chair, slow and sure, arm draped loose over the back like a man entirely, completely unfazed.

Even though he wasn’t.

Not even close.

He raised two fingers toward the waiter without looking away from her.

“Check,” he said, voice low and final.

And in that one word?

Everything shifted.

No more banter. No more buildup.

Just promise.

Just follow-through.

Because Tyler Harrison had talked enough.

Now he was ready to prove it.

Ellie didn’t move at first.

Didn’t smirk. Didn’t preen. Just sat there like the flame he’d willingly walked into—calm, composed, a storm in lipstick and lace who already knew the ending because she’d written it.

Then, without breaking eye contact, her hand shifted beneath the table—slow, deliberate.

Her hand slid up the side of his knee.

Paused.

Then kept going.

Trailing higher, right to the inside of his thigh.

Right to the place that made his breath hitch and his knuckles tighten on the edge of the table like it was the only thing keeping him grounded.

She didn’t have to say a word. Her gaze said it all.

This was hers now—he was hers now—and they both knew it.

And when he said check—low, sure, final—she didn’t flinch.

She rose slowly, every movement soaked in intent. Picked up her purse with one hand. Took the spoon with the other. Twirled it between her fingers like a loaded weapon, then set it down beside his plate with a soft clink.

Leaning in, she let her lips brush just shy of his cheek.

Close enough to make him chase the phantom of it later.

Then, soft as sin:

“Hope your stamina’s better than your comebacks, Harrison.”

And just like that, she turned and walked away—heels clicking like the countdown on a bomb.

No glance back.

No need.

He’d follow.

They both knew it.

Outside, the night air wrapped around her like a hush. Cool, quiet, full of stars and possibility. She stepped beneath the nearest streetlamp, the glow painting her in amber and shadow, catching on the silk ribbon at her waist, the soft curve of her collarbone, the pearl drop of her earring.

Her arms stayed loose at her sides.

No phone. No jacket. No nerves.

Because this moment?

She wanted it to feel like her.

She wanted him to see her this way—elegant, composed, with heat still curling low in her belly and fire still flickering behind her lashes. She stood with one foot tucked behind the other, a pose born more of instinct than design, and tilted her face toward the night sky.

She could hear him inside.

Or rather—she could hear the space where he used to be.

The stillness when he wasn’t moving.

The pause before the storm.

And when the door behind her creaked open?

She smiled—barely. Soft. Certain.

Because Ellie wasn’t wondering if he’d follow.

She was just waiting for the moment he did.

And when the door did open—when that familiar creak split the night like a secret spilling—it wasn’t hesitant.

It was a decision.

Tyler stepped into the dark like it belonged to him. Like she did.

He didn’t speak. Didn’t call her name. Just stood in the golden spill of light for a breath—long enough for the door to swing shut behind him, long enough for the silence to thrum again with something molten.

And then he moved.

Toward her.

Boots crunching softly against the sidewalk, his jacket slung over one shoulder like an afterthought. Hair tousled. Shirt sleeves rolled. And that look on his face—that look—like he’d already imagined every inch of what came next and was more than ready to live it.

He didn’t stop until he was close enough to breathe her in. Until her perfume curled into his lungs like a spell he’d stopped trying to fight.

And when she tilted her head—when she gave him that slow, dangerous little smile?

He didn’t waste a second.

He stepped in.

One hand sliding to her waist, firm and reverent. The other rising to brush the curve of her cheek like she might vanish if he moved too fast.

“You talk a big game,” he murmured, voice rough and reverent all at once, “but I’m done letting you walk away like you didn’t just burn down the restaurant.”

His thumb skimmed her jaw, gentle now.

“And if I’m yours, Tate,” he added, eyes locked on hers, “then you better be ready for the way I worship.”

He kissed her then.

Harder this time. No sweet prelude. No slow build. Just heat and hunger and years of almosts collapsing into now.

Because Tyler Harrison wasn’t bluffing.

And Ellie Tate?

She wasn’t walking alone into that night.

She was being claimed by it.

Ellie didn’t flinch when the door creaked open.

Didn’t look over her shoulder like some swooning ingénue waiting for rescue.

She already knew it would be him.

She felt it in the air shift. In the way the night held its breath like even the stars didn’t dare interrupt. In the low, deliberate way his footsteps cut through the quiet—measured, sure, inevitable.

And when he reached her—close enough for her perfume to catch fire on his breath, for his gaze to settle over her like heat—she didn’t lean in.

Not yet.

She let him speak first. Let him touch. Let him press that thumb against her jaw like a vow.

And then—finally—Ellie turned.

Looked up at him with lashes low and lips parted, like she was two seconds from saying something dangerous and absolutely meant it.

“Oh, baby,” she murmured, voice a slow drip of sugar and threat, “I didn’t burn down the restaurant.”

She tilted her face into his hand, smirk slipping like silk.

“I just lit the match. You’re the one who poured the gasoline.”

Her fingers found his collar, tugging him closer like gravity had nothing to do with it. Like she’d always been his center of orbit and was just now letting him notice.

And when he kissed her—no hesitation, no mercy, no more pretending—Ellie didn’t soften.

She matched it.

Breathed him in like smoke. Pulled him tighter like the space between them was offensive. Let him taste the years she’d waited. The nights she’d dreamed. The months she’d watched him fumble and flinch and figure it out—and still loved him anyway.

And when they finally broke, lips bruised and breath tangled, she didn’t step back.

She licked her bottom lip once—slow, deliberate—and smiled like a girl who knew exactly what came next.

“You ready to follow through, Harrison?” she whispered, teasing and reverent all at once. “Because I’m done flirting with maybe.”

She slipped her hand into his.

Cool fingers, steady grip.

Then turned toward the night like it was theirs to ruin.

And she didn’t look back.

Because Tyler was already beside her.
